What and Why Bridges ?

Books but a depiction of elusive bridg-

es, connecting times, souls, ideas, and

fantasies.

They take us where their creators fan-

cy, those word painters who color the

world of our imagination, draw laughs

and tears on our faces, decorate our

thoughts, and share all this gracefully.

Books are Bridges.. That bring us to-

gether, higher, deeper..

Bridges is a new

place, not a bookstore, not a library, not a

cafe, but a combination of all. The place is

a dedication to the beautiful city of Jeddah

and its people, a place where you could read

browse, rent and buy books and get inspired.

Our main goal is to promote reading,

through providing a collection of books

hosting book clubs and events, having

book reviews to share knowledfe of in-

teresting books to be read, and most

importantly, a unique atmosphere and

experience that you will remember.

It is a BOOK STORY..

I was in my 2nd year study at Jordan University in 2002 when my room mate asked me to join her for a visit to her parents friends who have just moved to Amman. I still remember the appearance of the book shelves they had in their large living room and they way my eyes have fell down to Dr.Richard Carlson book! I was

attracted by the name. For curiosity only, I opened the book to read just the first page which at-

tracted me in away to ask the people who I only met to borrow the book! I could

not sleep that night because from the great positive power of that book that made me flipping over and

over the pages to finish the whole 400 pages in one night!

Now its 2010, and I still go through the same book pages, which I decided to buy,

between times. Simply, I can say: it keeps turn-ing all my negative feelings into positive ones in

an unknown way by keep telling me how to use ev-ery minute of my day, focus on the good things, think and behave simply and be me! I just feel its like a char-ger and I have to read it between times to empower and full fill my soul and thinking deep inside with the simplicity, love, share, care and happiness.

One of the reasons why you will like this book: its the author›s way of keep encouraging you to be your self so you will feel free and if you are like a bird fly-ing in the sky without any limitation or the rules of the society that restricts most of our behaviors which push us to exaggerate to make others satisfied most and it ends in making us feel sad, lonely, depressed, miserable and mad most of the times while the lovely moments and the spectacular scenes of this life are passing in front of us!

The TippingPOINT

Author

Reviewd By

Malcolm Gladwell

Rayan Karkadan

Page 19: Bridges - Book Review Magazine - Issue No.2

Everyone in the world has heard of the term

“Epidemic”. I for one always thought of it as

a fast spreading disease. But it was not until

I picked up this mind boggler by Malcom

Gladwell that I had a more complete un-

derstanding of not just the meaning of the

term, but all the pieces that make up this

sometimes puzzle of a concept. From viral diseases, once-lame kids’ shoes

to the famous ride of Paul Riveare, the

author displays and explains how any

common trend starts small, then undergoes

factors that enable it to break out of its

concise shell. Gladwell, a well-known journalist, lends the

reader his eyes, through which he dissects

and analyzes what he views as the critical

factors playing into the spread of any trend.

“The Tipping Point”, a phrase he coined as

to suggest that the accumulation of factors

leading to the formation of an epidemic

plays the role of the straw that broke the

camel’s back. The image of a match on the

cover says it all: Little things can make big

things happen. He starts by introducing the basic needs of

an epidemic. The agent, the carrier and the

environment. By telling the stories of different breakouts,

several trends, he asserts that there are rules

and laws that govern these needs. “The

Three rules of Epidemics” he calls them.

The first rule he coined “The Law of the

Few”. Here he compares the quantity of the

people or the “carriers” of an epidemic to

the quality; obviously favoring the latter.

Using the “word of mouth” model as a clear

example, he states that the effectiveness

with which a message is spread, a trend is

started relies mostly on the certain types

of people rather than a large number of

ineffective ones. He uses the famous theory

“6 degrees of separation” to attract our

attention the importance of a certain type

of person he calls the “Connector”. Despite

the cool name, it’s basically a person who

knows a lot of other persons, to make it

simple. He also mandates the presence of

“The maven”, a person who knows A LOT.

If there is a trend, a technology or a new

product out there, the maven knows about

it. These are people who help consumers

make informed decisions, but not neces-

sarily persuade or convince them. That

–persuasion- is the role of “The salesman”.

Together, these few are capable of moving

any message, product, trend or disease

closer to the Tipping Point.Next, he talks about an important yet hard

to define concept he calls “The Stickiness

Factor”. The name says it all, but I was in

complete admiration when he demonstrat-

ed successful experiments using this con-

cept to reach children. He further increased

my admiration with explaining that if you

could just get the attention of children long

enough, a tightly, neatly packaged

message with the “stickiness factor” would be effective easily and immediately. Think of a certain tall yellow bird on a children’s tv show, and you’ll grasp what I’m getting at.

He concludes the book by mentioning case studies and

examples in which he picked

up these patterns, whenapplied to the “Context”of their respectiveenvironments. The book

certainly adds a lot to the readers’ insight andbroadens their fields of vision

in a way that eases the path

for the observant. A Must pick-up for marketers, businessmen and anyone with a message, a calling which he or she would like to “infect” the world with. I found it to be a bit heavy for the common reader only because of the abundance of examples, numbers and case studies he presents.I recommend more of a scrolling style for the latter.

Page 20: Bridges - Book Review Magazine - Issue No.2

The book tells a story

about an 83 years old guy

called Eddie. It shows you

how he lived his life and

how the people around

him play a very important

rule in it, starting from his

death. after his death

he will meet five people.

Each soul has a story to

tell, a secret to reveal,

and a lesson to share.

Through them Eddie

understands the meaning

of his own life even as

his arrival brings

closure to theirs.

A book that drives your

feelings to different

directions in a simple

delicate writing. It can

simply make you live the

happiness, sadness, love

..etc of Eddie’s life.

It opens your eyes of

how treating insignificant

people can affect your

life one way or another .

Now you might have seen the author on

television , Jeremy Clarkson is the tallest man

working in British television today and if you don’t

know who he is then you haven’t watched top

gear which is an automotive show on the BCC,

and I just repeated myself twice .

His critical style of writing is both honest and

exuberantly funny, that’s what makes him unique

as a critical writer, note he sometimes

exaggerates for humours sake. The World According to Clarkson is basically

about master Clarkson’s experiences and

opinion’s about the world and so far they have

been severely critical. Like one of the chapters

talks about the health and safety people as

being too over protective and annoying, Clarkson

gives us a solution for this problem, by performing

dangerous acts to really have them working on

over drive so eventually they, not being human,

will mentally pop. It’s a great laugh and he

continuously rages on, it’s none stop humour for

your brow, you will not stop laughing, this service

is guaranteed.Format wise the book is short with an average

of300 -380 pages, each chapter or subject is

about 4-5 pages long. The book is a brilliant read

and should be enjoyed, but reader digression is

advised due to the fact that it tackles a lot of

subjects from all over, master Clarkson is not

afraid to speak his mind.... Literally!

WhatPeopleSay...

By Maan SalhaHmmm Bridges, a place

that happens to be part

cafe and part library,

a place where people

open their cake holes

and continuously talk

about things that mat-

ter to them and only

them, but still not forget-

ting it’s part library so

the subject of literature

comes up occasionally.

Interesting isn’t it? How

a place in the middle of

other popular establish-

ments becomes talked

about and visited often.Well that’s because theatmosphere in this part

cafe part library is phe-

nomenally mellow and

new. It gives you the

feeling of sitting in a funky

library where you don’t

have to be silenced by

some grumpy guy that

wants to hear a pin drop,

but at the same time it

retains the peaceful

aspect of being in

a library with the

optional extra of order-

ing something to drink,

eat, or lightly snack on.

Bridges is not only a

Cafe-Library, it is also a

learning centre where

people can exchange

the knowledge of their

trade, lectures are a

big part of bridges and

not surprisingly a lot of

people attend, that’s

because (and i forgot

to mention this) it is part

cafe, part library, part

physical social network

where you don’t have to

look a computer screen,

and part funky learn-

ing centre. If your an

intellectual and you

want to vent some

steam out then bridges

is the place to visit, if

your not an intellectual

but still want a place to

go then your more than

welcome because it’s

also a great cafe, if you

don’t want a cafe or a

library then Bobs your

uncle (British expression

for everything is alright)because it’s anexuberantly

brilliant

place to meet friends

and if you don’t want

to do any of the follow-

ing then it’s still a brilliant

place to sit quietlyand think.
