Bridging the Path to Authentic Texts

for Novice Learners Presented by Kristy Placido

Authentic text: A text created by native speakers for native speakers.

Semi-authentic text: A text created using real language for a real purpose but not

necessarily created solely by or for native speakers.

Text: Any material which conveys a message. A video, a song, a story, a commercial, a cereal box, a news

clip, a website, a tweet, a Facebook page, a text message, a children’s book, photos, art, etc.

Locate a text

Do you want to use it to teach language, culture or both? Identify standards text can help you meet. No

authentic text will ever be “level appropriate.” You must adjust the activities to make it accessible to

students.

Decide on what portion of the text to use. A full text could be quite overwhelming.

Pre-teach vocabulary – be selective!

Pre-teach cultural info? Or would you rather allow students to make inferences about culture?

Re-write information in simpler terms but keeping it in the target language.

Can you connect the authentic text to other things you are teaching? For instance, can you

connect a song to a cultural topic you are studying, or a video clip to a novel you are reading?

comprehensible.

If you are teaching a topic about which students have little background knowledge or personal

connection, you may wish to assign a little online research or reading at home. Or perhaps give them a

questionnaire about a related topic which they are familiar with to get them thinking in comparative

terms.

Converse, storytell, and question in the TL the topics encountered in the text. Constantly clarifying,

circling questions, making it comprehensible. Use cognates and rely heavily on known vocabulary.



Share the actual text with students.

If it is a longer text, pause and discuss

frequently. Return to the “circling”

technique of asking questions.

Discuss, circle, returning often to the

key structures

Use screen shots or drawings to aid

comprehension

Alternate modes of input: if it is a video,

provide a reading also.

Select a limited amount of vocabulary – about 3-4 words per day of preteaching portion of unit. These

words will take about 4 days for me to pre-teach using TPRS.

At the end of the pre-teaching, read the book with the students.

Projected with a document camera (Elmo or AverMedia are common brands)

Lots of questions and discussion. Additional literacy activities may also be done to reinforce the

vocabulary and concepts.

Consider looking at some of Kahlo’s actual artwork (Preview carefully! Some works are not appropriate

for a typical high school classroom!). Discuss the events in her life that influenced the work. Frida Kahlo

sometimes used Mexican exvotos as inspiration for her style. At this time, discuss the tradition in

México of creating exvotos to show thanks for a miracle. Show several examples. Students may then

create their own exvotos.

Line Up” activity. Give these lines as

cut-up sentence strips in an envelope

Hace muchos años, vivía una muchacha en Grecia. La muchacha, llamada Arachne, sabía tejer muy bien. Era experta en tejer. Tejía muchos tejidos con dibujos elaborados. La gente llegaba de diferentes ciudades para mirar los tejidos bellos. Pero Arachne era muy arrogante.

Arachne empezó a decirles a las personas que tenía más talento para tejer que la diosa Atena. Atena era conocida también por su talento para tejer.

Cuando Atena escuchó que Arachne se creía mejor, Atena se enojó. Atena le dijo a Arachne, --Vamos a tener una competencia de tejer.

La muchacha y la diosa empezaron a tejer. Tejieron todo el día hasta la noche. Entonces, compararon su trabajo.

El tejido de Atena era muy bello. Había dibujos de los dioses y las diosas encima de la Montaña Olimpos. Ellos ayudaban a la gente en los dibujos.

Arachne también tejió dibujos de los dioses y las diosas, ¡pero en sus dibujos estaban borrachos y tontos!

Atena se enojó muchísimo al ver las imágenes terribles. Apuntó el dedo a Arachne. Arachne se convirtió en una araña. Atena gritó –Si tú quieres tejer, ¡puedes tejer!
