The 2012 Bridgman Area Chamber of Commerce Business & Visitors Guide was Produced, Designed and Published by a partnership of two local professionals.

Daniel Buckenmeyer, a local independent consultant who served as Director of Economic Development for the Bridgman area, initiated the project around his assertion that past guides fell short of appropriately representing this great community and region. The Bridgman area boasts a wide range of dining options, from fast-food franchise favorites to a diverse medley of locally-owned and operated restaurants. You’ll find the former dotted

principally along Red Arrow Highway, with McDonalds just off of Exit 16, and Subway and Pizza Hut located next door to one another just South of Lake Street. All offer the well-known deals and menus you may even have committed to memory. North of Lake Street on Red Arrow Highway you’ll find the next best thing to the bleachers at Wrigley Field. The Get-a-way Saloon is the best place around to catch a Cub game, and it’s a lot easier to park here than it is at Sheffield and Addison. Across the street and a bit further North you’ll find D’Agostino’s Navajo Restaurant. Family owned for over 60 years, the D’Agostino’s have been serving authentic Italian cuisine, hand cut steaks, fresh seafood, and more.

A GREAT STARTER…

The Beachside Bakery dates back for years as a downtown Bridgman landmark. An ancient and immense oven serves as a hidden centerpiece to the building and is a critical ingredient to the creation of their delicious pastries, cakes and breads that grace the display cases out front. The bakery blends old with new, offering their baked goods with Starbucks coffees. It’s a great place to start your morning.

DRIVE-IN TO EAT-OUT

Mikey’s Drive-In Restaurant reopens this season with new ownership

but a strict adherence to the nostalgic experience of drive-in eating with carhops and classic favorites. (OK so they’ve given into one trapping of modern life, they now take credit cards.) Located just off Red Arrow Highway north of Lake Street, just pulling into Mikey’s will make you feel like you’ve pulled off of old Route 66 or into a scene from “American Graffiti.” Test your suspension and your digestion with a famous half-pound “Mikey Burger” eaten over the steering wheel, or make yourself at home in an inside booth or outside picnic table.

NO WIMPY FOOD HERE

Similarly classic fare can be found at the new “Big O’s (formerly Young’s) on Lake Street just east of Red Arrow. The new owners fondly call it their “gram & gramp” (as opposed to “mom & pop”) restaurant and offer a range of delicious home-made comfort foods along with classic favorites. Even Wimpy (Popeye’s pal who euphemized “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today,”) could happily feast upon Big O’s burgers on $2 Tuesdays.

EPIC VARIETY WITH A PEEK OF GREEK

Olympus, another local family-owned restaurant, is well-known for their widely diverse menu featuring high-quality home cooking. In the midst of all this variety the owners haven’t given their old country’s cuisine the boot, you can find homemade baklava and other Greek favorites regularly.

FILL THAT GRILL

The Bridgman Premier Meat Market at 4352 Lake Street offers just about everything you need if you’d rather fire up the grill (or oven, broiler, etc…) at home. A rare classic custom butcher shop, local owner Al will cut your steaks as thick as you like them. He also makes great brats and other specialized meats on-site, if you don’t see it, just ask. There’s also a great selection of seafood, wines and other accoutrements and plenty of expert guidance on making your meat – and your meal – a hit.

HEAD EAST

…on Lake Street to find the far-eastern cuisine of China Café, just before the tracks in downtown Bridgman. The owner moved from China to the Midwest years ago and opened several restaurants before settling in Bridgman’s old State Bank building where he’s served up popular dishes from every region of China for 20 years. Local favorites include their Governor’s Chicken, Egg Rolls and Fried Rice. The setting is unique, with evidence of the building’s heritage as an old bank everywhere (even on the bathroom walls). But the atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming, whether you stay to eat or simply venture in briefly for take-out.

If several loaves from the Beachside Bakery aren’t even enough to feed your masses, it doesn’t take a miracle, just call on Classic Catering & Events. The team at Classic can accommodate the needs of virtually any size crowd and event. The same unique microclimate that produces the “fruit of the vine” has for years produced an incredible diversity of other fruits and vegetables. Years ago, the region was recognized

for its unique ability to grow produce that couldn’t prosper in any other part of the Midwest. The absence of modern transportation and/or refrigeration we now take for granted made this region a critical provider of fruits and vegetables to Chicago and other nearby population centers. Today’s consumers are driving a return to locally grown foods and - choosing to drive themselves to the source. That source, the farms and fields of our region, are answering the call with an abundance of locally grown foods.From Spring’s asparagus to Summer’s blueberries, and Fall’s apples and pumpkins, the “Lake effect” makes it all possible. If you’ve heard the expression “cooler by the lake” in our area, it references the weather patterns affected by our close proximity to Lake Michigan. And, while anyone who’s experienced a Michigan Winter might scoff at the euphemism, “warmer by the lake” is also true. These milder seasons combined with the lake breezes that waft over the rolling countryside make our region as fertile and abundant as it is lovely and relaxing.One of our region’s most popular and abundant treats is the blueberries that typically ripen throughout the height of summer. There are several nearby farms where you can pick your own or buy them freshly picked. We recommend both Jones Blueberries and Rambo Blueberries, locally owned and locally grown at locations indicated on the maps on page 11.

FRUIT OF THE VINE

We know that many of you who are visiting (and more than a few who live here) have come for the wine. You’re in the right place as no less than eight wine producing vineyards can be found within about 10 minutes of I-94’s Exit 16 and/or downtown Bridgman. All of them feature tasting rooms on-site, many offer tours and other events and attractions, and a few have off-site tasting rooms where you can purchase your favorite wines.

OUR LOCAL WINE REGION

The Lake Michigan Shore American Viticultural Area (AVA) is the official designation given to this wine growing region that extends from here North, roughly to Saugatuck along the Lake and Kalamazoo inland. Best to plan a full day, even better to plan a full weekend, and most important of all, have a designated driver to tour and taste at all of them. Make sure to include enough time, or even another day, to visit the fabulous northerly vineyards of Lake Michigan Shore. More information on all of the wineries of the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail can be found in the center spread of this guide.

HOW TO FIND THEM ALL

Local communities have recently partnered in an effort to provide helpful and informative “wayfinding” signage throughout the area. For years, the blue signs marking the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, along with a smattering of other winery-specific directional

signs have done their best to guide visitors through the area. Still, some of the roads through the vineyards and countryside prove to be a bit confusing. Soon you’ll be treated to attractive and informative signs that guide you throughout the region to vineyards and other businesses and attractions of interest. An accompanying web-based guide is planned for the future to pair with the new signage to assure that you find everything you’re looking for.

THE BEST WAYS TO SEE LOCAL VINEYARDS

Of course the best way to tour our local vineyards is with a knowledgeable guide. Fruitful Vine Tours offers a number of ways to see them all. For those who want to truly soak in all of the scenery while pedaling through and to the vineyards, their “Tour de Grape” bicycle excursions take groups on guided rides. Another unique offering is their “Wine O Wagon” which takes you and your fellow tasters “hayride style” through the countryside on a slow and relaxing trip to the wineries. Finally, for those seeking more modern wheels, their “Vino Coach” provides all of the comforts of a luxury bus to take your group to the vineyards. All are an excellent and safe way to see and taste all of the great wines and wineries of the area and pickup locations are offered all across the area.

It’s the original Wine Festival on the Lake Michigan shore. For nearly a decade the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Festival, held annually on the third Saturday of June on Bridgman’s Weko Beach, has welcomed

several thousand wine lovers to enjoy great bands, fabulous food, and taste all of the wines from thirteen Lake Michigan Shore wineries. This year’s June 16th event starts at 1pm and continues into the evening until 10pm, giving all attendees the opportunity to combine it all with one of our gorgeous West Coast (of Lake Michigan) sunsets. We highly recommend this event.

OUR AREA’S OTHER LOCAL LIBATIONS

While we’re quite proud of our wineries, we’d be remiss in not mentioning our region’s burgeoning breweries and developing distilleries. Michigan’s craft beer industry has been booming in recent years, and again, there’s a great opportunity to try them all right here on the Lake in Bridgman. The 3rd annual Weko Beach Brewers Festival will be held on Saturday, September 26th from 3pm to 9pm. Again, great bands, fabulous food, and a gorgeous sunset are all bonus accompaniments to the over 30 varieties of craft beer you’ll be able to sample from about a dozen of Michigan’s craft breweries. Another event not to be missed.

BUY THEM ALL IN ONE PLACE

Of course, there are plenty of times when a glass of wine is desired or appropriate, but a visit to the winery itself isn’t entirely convenient. For those occasions we all enjoy the convenience of Harding’s Friendly Market’s vast selection of local wines. In addition to great prices on all of the essentials for our daily shopping lists, Harding’s carries an incredible selection of Michigan’s local wines and craft beers in addition to a well-stocked liquor department. Harding’s does a great deal to support our community, local businesses and events such as the aforementioned Wine and Brewer’s Festivals, and we encourage locals and visitors alike to shop with them.


Baroda is nestled in the center of Berrien County in southwest Michigan, and just a few short minutes East of Bridgman. The Village of Baroda, home to less than 900 residents, is nestled

amidst lush farmlands and vineyards and is a true rural treasure. “Casual Country Charm” is both a slogan and an apt description of the Village, which, with its quaint brick-paved main street, will remind you of a time when life wasn’t so busy. Baroda is home to two beautiful parks. The Village Park, located along Hickory Creek, offers tennis courts, basketball courts, playground equipment and a picnic pavilion. Join us on the on the 4th Sunday of June, July and August at 4pm for an afternoon of music and relaxation. Bring family and friends and pack your lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic lunch, or enjoy the concessions available at the park. Baroda Township is home to Hess Lake Park, a beautiful 29-acre park with nature trails, fishing on Hess Lake, soccer fields, baseball fields, and a covered pavilion.Baroda is also known for our spectacular fireworks display every July 3rd at the Legion field. Come early to get a good spot and enjoy live music, food and beer in the tent before the fireworks begin.The Saturday after Labor Day is our annual Barodafest! This festival is filled with fun for the whole family. Start the day with a delicious pancake breakfast, participate in our 5KRun/Walk, children’s games, enjoy the parade, car show, tractor pull, arts and crafts, baked goods, and live entertainment all day. FIERY BEGINNINGS

In the fall of 1856, George Bridgman, along with partners Warren and Charles Howe formed the Charlotte Lumber Company. A large steam-powered sawmill was set up near the present intersection of Lake Street and Red Arrow Highway. A narrow-gauge railway was constructed, running from the mill to the lake with several branches into the timber. About seven miles of track were busily traveled by an engine and over 30 cars. The area around the mill became known as Charlotteville, after one of the Howe brother’s wives, Charlotte.Unfortunately the Charlotte Mill was destroyed by fire in 1863. Over the next seven years, the partners rebuilt two more times, and each time the Mill was again destroyed by fire. The Howe brothers were finally convinced that this wasn’t their calling and in 1870 left the area to pursue other ventures.George Bridgman, however, decided to stay in the area. Bridgman had acquired several hundred acres of land, including most of present-day Bridgman, and he and other residents began growing fruit trees, grapes and berry plants. Of course the market for their fruits was limited to what could be sold locally.

A GROWTH SPURT FROM THE RAILROAD

Mr. Bridgman granted right of way to the Chicago Michigan and Lakeshore Railroad to pass through his land, and in 1871 the “Bridgman Depot” was erected. That same year the Post Office changed their local designation to Bridgman carrying George’s name into history.

The Railroad Depot enabled the already growing nursery business to explode in Bridgman. In 1888 Ozro Baldwin ran a three-line ad for raspberry plants in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Farm Journal. He received orders for all of his plants and the next year several hundred folders were sent out quoting prices for strawberry and cane plants. The mail-order nursery business soon became a million-dollar industry in Bridgman. While many local names have been associated with the business over the years, two stalwarts, Krieger and Rambo wholesale nurseries, still operate in Bridgman today. Rambo Nurseries operate a Blueberry U-Pick and Farmstand on Gast Road that is open to the public. (See map listings on page 11).

A BEACH HOUSE IS BORN

The Lake Michigan Shoreline in Bridgman became popular in the 1920’s. Partners Henry Weber and Bruno Kolander built a waterfront pavilion on the beach, which to this day carries the name they formulated from the first two letters of their last names… Weko Beach. Their pavilion became a popular destination for residents and visitors from all around, particularly Chicago.Today the Weko Beach House sits on the pavilion’s site, and is run by the City of Bridgman as one of the most attractive public beaches in the region. The building continues to provide food and fun to residents and visitors alike.

stay off the ice!) a trip down to the beach in winter offers an often peaceful perspective on the waterfront.

The towering dunes of Warren Dunes State Park are a popular sledding spot when the snow falls.

Enjoy a new and relaxing perspective on the region with a casual drive through the sparkling, snow-covered countryside.

And with the summer crowds gone, a winter trip to our local wineries and tasting rooms offers connoisseurs and casual wine drinkers alike a unique opportunity for a slower-paced round of tasting... and maybe even an opportunity to chat with the winemakers themselves.
