Brief Industrial Profile of Giridih District 1. General Characteristics of the District :

Giridih District, an administrative district of Jharkhand has its headquarter at

Giridih. It was carved out from Hazaribag District on 4th December 1972. The

district lies between 24 degree 11 minutes north latitude and 86 degree 20 minutes

east longitude. Lying almost in the central part of the North Chhota Nagpur

Division, the district is bounded by Jamui District and part of Nawada District of

Bihar in the north, by the district of Deoghar and Jamtara on the east, by Dhanbad

& Bokaro on the south and by Hazaribag & Koderma on the west. Giridih District is

spread over an area of 4853.56 Sq. Km. The famous Parasnath hill (The SAMMED

SHIKHAR JEE, famous Jain Temple ) is situated here and it is the highest peak of

Jharkhand having altitude of 4431 feet above the sea-level. The district is also

famous as a place of ruby mica and coal field. The famous Grand Trunk Road (NH-

2) also passes through this district. History of Giridih District is a part of the history

of its parent district Hazaribag as well as also of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. The

entire territory of Chhota Nagpur, known as Jharkhand was believed to be covered

with inaccessible hills and forests.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area. The district lies between 24º 11' to 24º 48' (North) latitude and 85º 30' to 86 º 20'

(South) longitude. It is bounded by Jamui District and part of Nawada District of

Bihar in the north, by the district of Deoghar and Jamtara on the east, by Dhanbad

& Bokaro on the south and by Hazaribag & Koderma on the west. Giridih District is

spread over an area of 4853.56 Sq. Km.

1.2 Topography : Giridih is one of the eastern districts of Jharkhand and is situated in the northern plain of India and eastern plateau & hill region. The Climate of Giridih district is Semi tropical with hot & dry in summer and cold in winter through out the district. The temperature varies from 440C maximum to 80C minimum. The annual rainfall varies from 110cm to 130cm. The district has reach forest resources and have several jungles of sal trees and bamboos, and a variety of other indigenous trees. Parasnath hills have a number of plants having medicinal use. Leopards, bears, jackals, wild pigs and hares are the wild animals found in the certain parts of the district which have thick forests.

1.3 Availability of Minerals:

The main mineral of the district is Coal. However Building Stone, Sand

Stone, Quartz & Red Bricks are also minerals and mining of this district.

1.4 FOREST :

The forests cover an area of 1,59,160.78 hectares in 2010-11, which is covered by mostly saal & bamboo trees. 1.5 Administrative set up.

Giridih town is the Division headquarter of Giridih itself. For administrative

purpose the district has been divided into 1 Sub Division & 13 nos. of Blocks /

Tehsils as follows :-
