GENERAL INFO ON IMRK
IMRK - Testing of metal and metal lattice structures is a specialized organizational unit of the Power Transmission Lines Engineering, a part of Energoinvest dd Sarajevo. The facility has been initially established within Energoinvest back in 1956, and has been performing the testing of metal and metal lattice structures ever since. In 1970, testing facility was situated on its current location and named the Institute for experimental research of metal lattice structures. The abbreviation of this title in Bosnian – IMRK, has become a “trade mark” of Energoinvest’s tower testing station kept to this day. Unlike most tower testing facilities, IMRK has the advantage of being located in the city urban zone and next to a factory of transmission line towers.
ACTIVITIES OF IMRK
Basic activities of IMRK consist of:
Preparation of test programmes for the mechanical testing of transmission line steel structures, metal and metal lattice structures Mechanical testing of transmission line towers including draft of technical elaboration and issuance of adequate test certificates Experimental research of metal structures with the aim of accomplishing technical improvement in the field and upgrading the economic feasibility with respect to manufacture and erecting
SCOPE OF SERVICES FOR MECHANICAL TESTING OF THE STRUCTURES
Draft of test programs based on the data and load cases specified by the static calculation Designing and manufacture of the mechanical system of links for the entire equipment and measuring devices included in the testing process Designing and manufacture of necessary rigging elements for selected load points on the towerTechnical control of structures and built-in material Mechanical testing of the structures Photographing of the course of testing Technical analyses of the performed tests, including issuance of test certificates

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CAPACITY OF THE TESTING FACILITY
The IMRK testing facility includes:
A universal/adjustable foundation Transverse tower (T-tower) Longitudinal tower (L-tower) CranePulling devices (tirfors) Measuring instruments-wireless load cells: 18 pcs (+/- 0.1%)
-mechanical dynamometers: 50 pcs (+/- 2%)
Dimensions and capacities of the testing facility elements are as follows:
Universal foundation 17x40 = 680 m2
T-tower height 50 m L-tower height 50 m Crane height 57 m Beams’ length 40 m Beam bearing capacity:
- at the beam end 10 kN - in the beam center 20 kN
The aforementioned technical characteristics of the testing facility enable:
Realization of a horizontal loading in the form of concentrated forces within a continuous height range from 0 to 50m above the universal foundation Simultaneous application of up to 50 concentrated forces on the tower in the following way:
- in transversal direction - 20 - in longitudinal direction - 16 - in vertical direction - 14
(NOTE: directions are perpendicular to each other and refer to direction of a transmission line)
More specifically, the IMRK testing station is capable of performing:
Testing of T/L towers with the maximal base of 16m x 16m and maximal height of H=50-55 m (highest ever tested 57 m) Application of concentrated tensile forces up to 120 kN in one direction manually through tirfors and pulley systems, with force measurement using load cells and mechanical dynamometers (higher intensities possible if using load splitting per point) Monitoring of loads applied on load cells done individually by indicators in the field and overall by central PC with customized software displaying all corresponding loads Mechanical testing through static loading of supporting transmission line towers with a voltage level up to 500 kV, maximum overturning moment of M=50000 kNm and maximum force intensity in compressed or tensioned foundation stub of F=2000 kN

REFERENCES
Since its establishment on the current location in 1970, IMRK has tested more than four hundred towers of various types. More specifically:
Transmission line steel structured towers of different types and kinds (suspension, tension, terminal, tangent angle, crossing etc.) Aestetich design towers Railway, tram and trolleys traffic towers Ski-lifts, chairlifts, industrial cableway traffic towers Antenna support towers
Transmission line towers have been tested for clients from more than 40 countries, as it is specified in the table presented below:
