Spring 2021 Modern Physics Lab 13 Wave Nature of EM Spectrum Brief-Notes: 9 pages. Aug 10, 2020 1 Brief Notes: Modern Physics Lab 13 Wave Nature of EM Spectrum S21-with data Before lab: Read and follow the Labs General Notes instructions, especially about cleaning and disinfecting equipment before starting the lab and at the end. You should watch Lab 13 video (15:38 min) (Turn CC on for Captions) – note that this video does not show how to use the microscope https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X61G_CH5Pw8 . Read the lab manual and the Lab Brief-Notes which includes photos of apparatus and sample data. Do the prelab assignment and upload to blackboard. In lab: Bring the printed manual, a copy of the completed prelab assignment and these Brief-Notes to lab. Bring a laptop: You may want to replay parts of the video in lab Lasers are used in Part 1, and microwaves are used in Part 2. 1. Note that even if it is just a class II laser, it has the potential to damage your eyes (not instantly), so be careful. 2. Know how to measure the slit separation using the microscope. Also how to turn on the backlight of the table for microscope. 3. Students are allowed to write down whatever they want on the screen, since it is very difficult or even impossible to measure an accurate fringes separation while the laser is still on. There are new grid papers on the counter. 4. Make sure you know which is the microwave detector and which is the receiver. Sometimes students are confused between these two. 5. Make sure to choose the proper size for the slits for the microwave. The wavelength of the microwave is about 3 cm, hence the size of the slit should be smaller than the wavelength so the interference pattern can be observed. A slit width set to 1.5 cm will work fine. 6. Since there are not enough microwave experiment set ups, students need to take turns in using the set ups. Therefore some students should do the second part of the experiment first. 7. We have devices which use two conventions of vernier scale in the lab. Some microscope uses the convention that you have to multiply the scale before add the last digits, while some you don’t need to. Make sure you use the correct convention for your setup, and ask the TA if there is confusion.

Bring a laptop: You may want to replay parts of the video in lab Lasers are used in Part 1, and microwaves are used in Part 2. 1. backlight of the table for microscope. 3. Students are allowed to write down whatever they want on the screen, since it is very difficult

or even impossible to measure an accurate fringes separation while the laser is still on. There are new grid papers on the counter.

4. Make sure you know which is the microwave detector and which is the receiver. Sometimes students are confused between these two.
