Education, Architecture, Medical Sciences, Bio-Technology, journalism

and Mass Communication etc with 70,000+ students, “a culture of

put in the next orbit of its growth. Promotion of research and international

collaboration were the two important directions being adopted as strategic

option. The manifestation were –i) more than 100 research scholars were being

admitted every year through competitive Research Aptitude based examination

to carry out their research work leading to Ph. D degree, ii) Faculty members

being provided with sufficient fund to carry out research had resulted a large

number of high impacted journal publications iii) International faculty

of governance of a University was put in place where recurring grant from the

Government was not required.

During the five years tenure as Director of IIFM, Bhopal, under the

this, the following interventions were made: Media management, Bringing

eminent persons in the BOG, promoting topical research activities with external

aided research funds, promoting international linkages and changing drastically

moral & mindset of the faculty members of the Institute. The ten year

perspective plan had been prepared to initiate new set of academic activities for

IIFM. An integrative principle of management education was followed in this

document. First time in the country the concept of 3Ps (Profit, Planet, People) in

management education had been implemented in the Post Graduate in

Management curriculum.

During the stay (2003-2004) as Director of Jaipuria Institute of

Management Lucknow, the Institute was totally revamped and the campus

took a new look. It got the NBA accreditation and students’ strength got

enhanced from 120 to 180 with the approval of AICTE and State Government.

Service, promotion and incentive rules for the Faculty members and

administrative staffs were formulated. Students’ council was also formed with

appropriate by laws. The modern classrooms, conference hall and faculty

offices were also added up.

During the stay at IIM Lucknow (1986- 2003) the following institution

building contributions were made:

i) As founder Dean (Research & Academic Collaborations), established

linkages with the reputed management institutions of different countries for

students and faculty exchanges. For these, appropriate MOA were drafted and

signed with the partner Institutions. Prior to my taken over as Dean Academic

collaboration, IIM Lucknow did not have a single international linkages

program. Within three years, one third of the batches of PGDM (MBA) students

were sent to take one trimester courses at the partner institutions abroad.

Some of the partner Institutions with whom agreements were signed are –

ESSEC, ESCP-EAP, Reims School Of management, Lyon School of

Management, University of Lyon (France); ESADE (Spain); Copenhegan

Business School (Denmark); Jonkopping International Business School

(Sweden); UCL, Leuven (Belgium); HHL, LeipZig, European Business School

(Germany); McMaster University (Canada); Queensland University, Brisbrane (

Australia) etc .

ii) As founder Dean, a new chapter of academic vibrancy at IIM Lucknow was

established. Different incentive schemes were formulated to facilitate research

activities at the Institute. Within a few years, IIML became as one of the best

‘Intellectual capital’ institutions in the country.

iii) As founder Chairman Fellow Program (Ph.D.), a new model of fellow

program was designed and implemented. It resulted to have large number of

Fellows (Doctoral Students) to pass out each year with a good number of

publications.

iv) As curriculum review Committee in charge, designed state of the art PGDM

(MBA) courses.

etc.) at the initial stages of the Institute, devised systems, procedures,

guidelines keeping in mind the sustainable academic growth of the Institute.

Research Experience

The major scientific contribution of Prof. D.K. Bandyopadhyay through his

research and development activities can be classified under three categories:

In the area of mathematical modeling

In the area of Data Base Management System &

In the area of Management Information Systems

In all these three spheres of activities, he has used mathematical tools and

techniques for solving many practical problems in different areas of scientific

searches - such as structural engineering, seismology, manpower planning,

R&D management, Management Information Systems etc.

His research activities which have contributed to body of knowledge can further

be classified under two categories- model building and application of models in

solving practical problems.

During his Ph.D work, his research activities were in model building and

contributed in finding some answers to the scientific queries in the field of

computational mathematics. His papers appeared in different refereed national

and international journals/ proceedings such as Polish Academy of Sciences,

German Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Bulletin Calcutta

Mathematical Society etc. His works have been used by the scholars pursuing

research activities in the same area.

His immediate post Ph.D working at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology,

Pune for approximately four years gave him the opportunity to carry out further

work on computerized weather modeling. During this time some of the

algorithms developed by him for calculating Eigen values and Eigen vectors

were used by researchers at Theoretical Division of the Institute. Those

algorithms were tested using CDC- 3600 systems at Tata Institute of

Fundamental research. (A Package for Plotting the Isoberic and Isothermal Line

charts for Latitude and Longitude wise Values for Pressure and

Temperature (TIFR Bombay ) 1978; A Package for the Determination of Eigen

Values and Eigen Vectors for a NxN Matrix (CDC-3600; TIFR Bombay)

1979.)

The next five years, he devoted in the mathematical aspect of Data Base

Management system while working for CSIR and published an article which

appeared in International Journal of Information, Communication & Education

are used by many teachers in this field. The insight of this area helped him in

15

carrying out work in the field of R & D Management. Two of such pioneering

endeavors during early 80’s received high appreciation from the national level

science planners of India.

Manpower Management Information System for CSIR scientists &

Management Information System for current research projects.

Both of them were published as monograms by CSIR.

For the next eighteen years, he was involved in carrying out research activities

in the area of management information systems at Indian Institute of

Management Lucknow. His articles and working papers (Ref: Articles published

after 1986) have resulted in guiding six Dissertations and the Institute gave him

the responsibility for promoting research as Dean (Research). Many of his

Cases, based on researches are used in the class rooms to highlight new

concepts to the Post graduate/ doctoral students. His research reports, as

mentioned earlier, have helped many organizations in streamlining their

business systems (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Deparment

of S & T, Sugar and Textile industries, Government of UP, Birbal Sahani

Institute of Paleobotany, Ministry of Finance, Government of UP, Department

of Primary Education (Government of Rajasthan etc.).

He has supervised several Doctoral students and has contributed several

research articles/ conference papers on IT &Systems and related areas in

many National and International journals/ proceedings such as Quarterly Journal

of Electronic Commerce, Journal of Computer Society of India ,Polish

Academy of Sciences, German Academy of Sciences, National Academy of

Sciences, Bulletin Calcutta Mathematical Society, International Journal of

Information, Communication & Education, The Journal of Indian Management

& Strategy, Journal of Decision and Mathematical Sciences, Computer Society

Of India Conference Proceedings etc. In addition to that, he has written many

consulting/ research reports, chapters in books, monograms, working

papers and Cases. He has also developed quite a good number of computer

aided learning games which include simulation game on Marketing

Management, games on Integrated Management and simulation game on Project

Management etc. He has also successfully completed one research project on

“Computer based teaching/training lab” funded by Ministry of Human Resource

Development, Government of India. This lab is intensively used by the students

of IIM Lucknow.

He has been a keynote speaker in many International and National

Conferences/Seminars. Some of his research articles have been judged as the

best papers in different journals published in a particular year. He successfully

conducted a national conference on "Era of e-revolution" as Programme

Committee Chairman under the banner of CSI Lucknow Chapter. He was also

the member of the steering committee for the International Conference on e-
