March Stewards Brief Please keep this briefing document with you throughout the march and rally 

Some useful details   

• The route of the March is from The Embankment to Hyde Park  • Assemble from 11am at the Embankment  • The March will start at 12noon  • The TUC has hired Kings College Student Union, near the start of 

the March as a key Centre for organising the March  • Route Stewards will be sent an orange high visibility jacket and 

stewards handbook through the post  • Route Stewards will be able to sign in with Senior Stewards at 

points along the Embankment between 9.30 and 10.30 on the morning of the March (spare high visibility jackets and handbooks will also be available) 

 • There will be static Senior stewards (wearing pink high visibility 

jackets) every 100metres of the route with radio contact, so Route Stewards will never be more than 50 metres from a Senior Stew‐ard for assistance and advice 

 • If there are 100,000 on the March, it is estimated that the end of 

the March will not leave the Embankment until 3 hours after the March started 

 • Route Stewards need to give a mobile phone number to receive 

text alerts on the day  • You should also leave an emergency contact number in case of 

any problems

Steward’s responsibilities Your primary role as a volunteer is to help steward the supporters on the march and rally. Follow your senior steward’s instructions as they will be aware of the specific responsibilities in your  areas, the different event phases and your team deployment. Stay on duty ‐ don’t leave for breaks without a senior steward agreeing this, and please don’t be tempted to leave to join friends who may be at another point.  Your role is to steward unless a senior steward, or a police officer asks you to withdraw; or you feel that you are losing control of a situation or a criminal offence may be committed. In such situations, stewards must inform the nearest police officer and/or senior steward and act on the advice and/or instruction given. 

 You should not intervene with supporters or spectators who are un co‐operative, violent or  abusive ‐ in such a situation inform a senior steward or a police officer.  Key stewarding points 

 Always:  be tolerant of other people; remain calm and disciplined;   remain visible; keep in 

touch with other stewards; follow any instructions of the Police; and use your    common sense and stay safe.  Never:   be aggressive; put yourself at undue risk; or use force to maintain control! 

 Lost children If a child is lost, get them to stay with you until their parent or guardian arrives, which usually happens quite soon.  Ask the child if they have the mobile number of their parent or guardian ‐ and phone it. Get the child's name, age and a description, in case details are needed later.  If, within five minutes or so, the parent does not arrive, ask a senior steward to contact event control which is in touch with the entire event team. Follow the instructions from event control in order to handover the child to the lost child team.  First aid Please report any injuries to either yourself or supporters to a senior steward immediately. There will be an ambulance and first‐aiders at the rear of the march and in Hyde Park.  Do not undertake any first aid unless you are qualified and have the right materials; but do your best to calm and reassure anyone in distress, and tell them where the first aid point is. If  necessary, get any injured or unwell person to stay with you and send for help or alert your team leader or another event official.
