Hug Chevrolet Donates Truck to Boys & Girls Club

When Frank Hug heard the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club had a desperate need for a maintenance truck, he responded by donating a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. The previous Boys & Girls Club maintenance truck was 24 years old and had more than 165,000 miles. Purchased in 1997, the former truck was deemed non- drivable because of worn-out condition. “We are extremely grateful to Frank and our friends at Hug Chevrolet for this generous gift” said FSBGC board president Hugh Maurras. Hug has been a long time sponsor throughout the region supporting youth related programs and school activities. Hug Chevrolet has been serving the River Valley since 1937, and has been managed by 3 generations of Hug family members. Located at 415 E. Main St. in Charleston, Arkansas, they offer the best selection in new and used Chevrolet, Buick and GMC cars, trucks and SUV’s.

FSBGC RECEIVES LARGE GIFT OF YOUTH FISHING POLES

Through the efforts of Club board member Bennie Westphal, the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club has received a large donation of fishing poles from Mr. Ralph Duda of the Lil’ Angler and Anything Possible Brands. Club members will benefit from the donation through fishing activities arranged by the Club. Fishing helps young people build confidence, improve coordination and learn patience. The sport encourages healthy lifestyles while helping participants appreciate and understand nature. “Bringing families together is important in today’s world and fishing is one of the best ways that can happen” said Jerry Glidewell, FSBGC executive director. Planning is underway for upcoming fishing events for the Boys & Girls Club. Popular fishing holes in the City of Fort Smith include Torraine Lake on Chad Colley Blvd., Carol Ann Cross Park on 74th Street, and Wells Lake at the Janet Huckabee Nature Center.

Kiondre Thomas Tre’ Norwood

TRE’ NORWOOD DRAFTEDBY PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Former Club member Tre’ Norwood was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2021 NFL draft. Norwood was a star safety and cornerback for the Oklahoma Sooners, where he was named defensive MVP in the Cotton Bowl. Norwood grew up playing sports at the Stephens Boys & Girls Club in Fort Smith. He also worked part-time at the Stephens unit, where his father Michael Norwood was Boys & Girls Club Volunteer of the Year in 2016. Tre’s grandfather Garland “Hop” Bray was inducted into the FSBGC Hall of Fame in 2010. Tre’ bypassed a senior year of eligibility at OU to pursue a professional career in football. The Northside High School graduate is known for his speed and versatility on the football field. Tre was a key member of the NHS Grizzly State champion basketball team his senior year. During three seasons at OU, he played in 32 games and had 111 tackles, 6 interceptions and one touchdown. He was sidelined with ACL knee surgery during 2019. Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers has compared Norwood to a “Swiss Army Knife.” During his 3 seasons at OU (2017, 2018, 2020) the Sooners were ranked in the nation’s top 10 each season. “I’m very thrilled. I’ve always known the Steelers as a great organization, but the fan base has been showing so much love from the time I was drafted and once my name was called, so I’m basically ready to get up there and give it my all” said Norwood.

KIONDRE THOMAS SIGNSWITH CLEVELAND BROWNS

As a youth playing football at the Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club, he dreamed of one day getting a chance to play in the NFL. For Kansas State corner back Kiondre Thomas, it’s been a challenging but fulfilling journey so far. After graduating from Northside High in 2016, Thomas played three seasons in the Big Ten with the Minnesota Gophers. His senior year, he transferred to Kansas State, where he finished the 2020 COVID season with 21 solo tackles and 4 assists. Kiondre had a 6 tackles against Oklahoma State and was instrumental in the Wildcats victory over OU. Kiondre caught the eye of pro scouts with his hard nosed aggressive play. Before signing with Cleveland as a free agent, Thomas received offers from other NFL teams that included Detroit and Jacksonville. “I’m just trying to help the team win a Super Bowl in any way that I can,” Thomas said. “I’m willing to contribute on special teams and defense. I’m just wanting to do my part and Cleveland’s going to get a hard-working man. I’m going to come in there with a lunch-pail mentality and work as hard as I can” he added.

Summer Golf Clinic held at Boys & Girls Club

Through a partnership with the Ben Geren Youth Golf Academy, several Boys & Girls Club members are receiving golf lessons this summer. Instructors Matt Brown and Matt Brooks are leading weekly clinics at all four FSBGC locations. Last year, the Boys & Girls Club received golf sponsorship support from the Wayne Meeks Memorial tourney and support from Phil Merry and Alan McFerran. The Ben Geren Youth Golf Academy is located in the former First Tee facility. The group provides outreach services to provide opportunities for golf to children from throughout the community.
