Message from the Mayor of BrightonCouncillor Raymond Blackwood

I take pleasure in sending this message of greeting and goodwill to allwho will visit Brighton on the 12th September to be present, either asparticipantsor as spectators, at the 1987Endeavour BrightonNationalSpeedTrials.Over the past two centuries Brighton has attracted a never ending

succession of visitors. During the eighteenth century, already establishedas a health resort, the ancient villageof Brighthelmston was chosen by thefuture King George IV as the site for his Marine residence and throughhis patronage the modern Brighton was founded. In the nineteenth centurythe town developed as the most popular seaside resort in the South ofEngland, and from the middle of the present century, it has become aninternational conference centre of ever increasing renown. Also, to our good fortune, the town has become the venue for a vast

number of sporting activists in walking, running, cycling or driving, all ofwhom set their sights on Madeira Drive. Of these popular events, nonehas a greater attraction than the National Speed Trials. It is with great pleasure, therefore, that I send these good wishes to all

who are to participate this year, many of whom I look forward to meetingill person.

event been stored away, than the time comes to dust it all off again, ready for yet another year's"Do"; and this has been going on since the year 19 ought dot.For many years now the Vintage Motor Cycle Club have had the pleasure and the privilege

of organising the motor cycle part of the events at the kind invitation of the Brighton and HoveMotor Club, an arrangement that we trust will continue for many a happy year.Brighton Speed Trials are without doubt the oldest continuing racing event in the world (apart

from a couple of Teutonic interruptions) and yet, for all the commercialisation of motor andmotorcycle sport, Brighton still retains that old-style atmosphere of camaraderie that is oftenlamented in present times. It is for this reason that the V.M.C.C. tries to assemble a good cross-section of bikes that

are representative of both the years and the types. For example, "Ossie" Neal has been acompetitor for some sixty-five years and is still going strong, as is his old Scott stroker Twinsidecar rig. Compare that with the tiny 250cc sidecar unit of Dick Sullivan - a record breakerfor years in the "Titchy" classes, Dick can make' em go and it will be very interesting to seehow he comes out in comparison with, say, the very up-to-date Windle Yamaha of the Smithbrothers. In sprinting power-to-weight ratio is all important and for a direct comparison keep an eye

on Allan Morgan's 500 Rudge dating back to 1930, (very light, very slim as he himself is) andcompare it with perhaps Tony Huck's 1265cc Harris Suzuki which requires an awful lot ofhorsepower to shift the much heavier combination.Compare the performances of the heavy brigade in the 2000cc racing class with the performance

of "Bergspyder"s' ex-T.T. winning but strictly legal roadgoing Suzuki, which will as usual havebeen ridden up from Plymouth, and will be ridden back home after tile meeting is over, comerain or shine.Brighton regular Ron Geary will no doubt show that he does know what he's talking about

with one of his usual rapid trips down the drive which should chasten some of the local •'Racers" .I sbould have mentioned perhaps that Ron is a member of the local "Bill".Ido hope that the weather is kinder to all of us this year after last year's downpours. Do

enjoy the day - we certainly shall - and thank you for coming. Thanks too to the Brightonand Hove Motor Club, to the Host of Officials, Marshals and Time keeping crews - everybodyinvolved in fact, but especially to those Ladies who are always in the background beavering awayat all the paperwork etc. that helps so much to the success of the day. Here's to a good day's sport.
