The Canterbury Trail

angie abdou

It’s the last ski weekend of the season and a mishmash of snow enthusiasts is on its way to a remote backcountry cabin. In an odd pil-grimage through the mountains, the townsfolk of coalton—from the ski bum to the urbanite—embark on a bizarre adventure that walks the line between comedy and tragedy. As the rednecks mount their sleds and the hippies snowshoe through the cedar forest, we see rivals converge for the weekend. While readers follow the characters on their voyage up and over the mountain, stereotypes of ski-town culture fall away. loco, the ski bum, is about to start his first real job; Alison, the urbanite, is forced to learn how to wield an avalanche shovel; and michael, the real estate developer, is high on mushroom tea.

In a blend of mordant humour and heartbreak, Angie Abdou chronicles a day in the life of these industrious few as they attempt to conquer the mountain. With an avalanche of action, Abdou explores the way in which people treat their fellow citizens and the landscape they love.

Heinz grew ever more rigorous about maintaining his kingdom according to his exact vision, no matter how much work it took. At the trailhead, he mounted a huge sign—the size of a van—mapping the full route up the mountain, past the lake, and over the summit to Camelot. He named the whole thing The Canterbury Trail.

He wondered if legends had grown up around him—the weird recluse living in the woods building a kingdom of forest trails. As much as he hated people traipsing through what he viewed as his backyard, he did derive some enjoyment from their use of his trails. Yes, Heinz hated the ski bums with their graffiti and their dog shit, but, in the end, he needed them.

The Tartarus House on Crab

George szanto

tartarus: In Greek mythology, a dark, gloomy place far below the under-world; an abyss where evil-doers are tormented for eternity.

Jack tartarus has returned to his family’s house on crab, a small island off the east coast of Vancouver Island. After mulling it over for ten years, Jack has decided to tear the family house down, board by board, just as his father built it up. He purchases a crow bar and struggles with the first piece of siding. the wrecking bar jams between the old planks; it seems the house is determined to remain. People on crab Island are also angrily opposed to his plan—including his responsible sister, his self-centred niece, a beautiful woman he once knew intimately, and turtle, the hard-ware store clerk and the island’s self-proclaimed guardian.

In a story about families and family history, Jack’s calculated plans for demolition are fired by the memory of his parents, one among the losses he has suffered. like others who have retreated to crab Island, he has come to a place where he must make peace with the house in order to construct his future.

A National Magazine Award recipient and winner of the Hugh MacLennan prize for fiction,George Szanto is theauthorofseveralbooksofessaysandhalfadozennovels, themostrecent being his conquests of Mexico trilogy: The Underside of Stones, Second Sight, andThe Condesa of M.Heisalsotheco-authorofthepopularIslandsInternationalInvestigationsmysteryseries,whichincludesthetitlesNever Sleep with a Suspect on Gabriola IslandandAlways Kiss the Corpse on Whidbey Island.GeorgeisaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyofcanada.pleasevisitwww.georgeszanto.com.

Back in April Tartarus had considered hiring somebody: bring an excavator in, half a day, flatten the house. Or pay a guy to work with him. But that’d make the job easy, both options missing the point. He hadn’t come back to contract the work out. Tearing the place down by hand, his own hand, was what he had to do. Besides, bringing someone in would call for explanations.

On the drive north he’d committed himself to this method: pry the siding loose. He’d pull off the outer layers, get down to the struts, cut through them one by one by one. With enough supports gone the whole thing would come crashing down, right on top of his old low-ceilinged basement studio. He wouldn’t go down into it again, nothing there for him anymore.

Catch Me When i Fall

Patricia Westerhof

Welcome to Poplar Grove, a farming community with three generations of Dutch-canadians. life in the New World has not become less complicated as the decades have passed, and now, a set of dying customs is about to collide with the ways of a new generation.

the balance is shifting between people comfortable holding hymnals and cleaning cows’ teats and those who are uneasy with traditional expectations. A young woman grapples with contradiction between the holy appearance of her best friend’s family and the bits of reality she hears in her friend’s confidences; a woman mourns the loss of her disabled son, but also wishes to end the ritual state of mourning; a girl finds herself stranded on the battlefield between her new-age brother and her old World parents. these people are bound by time-worn expectations and the demands of an agricultural life. With humour and insight, author Patricia Westerhof examines a place where opposing ideologies mingle, and a community struggles to redefine who and what they are.

Patricia Westerhofwasborn toDutch-canadianparents, andspentpartsofher childhoodin Holland and in rural Alberta. Eustace lay on his bed wishing he had listened to the sermon. It had been about making amends, he knew that much.

His friend Tony was Catholic. Once, the two of them had looked at the Victoria’s Secret catalogue on the computer at Tony’s house. A long time ago now. They’d ogled the bra and underpants pages until Tony was red-faced and giggly like a girl. Flushed with excitement, or maybe guilt, Tony joked that he’d have to go to Confession that week. Do penance.

Eustace fiddled with his little mp3 player and inserted his earbuds. He would like to do penance. He’d do anything. Shovel manure. Clear rocks. Straighten fences, as best he could. Whatever would make things right.

Vancouver Kids

lesley McKnight

children and teenagers experience Vancouver in a different way than adults do. many generations of kids have lived on this same corner of land, and helped it to grow from an ancient First Nations gathering place to an isolated trading post to a rough port town to a great canadian city—yet how often have they been asked to tell their side of the city’s story?

Vancouver Kids is a collection of tales about the unforgettable young people of the city of Vancouver. Based on personal interviews and thorough archival research, each true story is narrated in the voice of a young Vancouverite. Join in the time-travelling adventure as these kids experience the earliest potlatch ceremonies, arrive on the HmcS Discovery, escape the Great Vancouver Fire, dodge the first cars on the old town’s streets, explore the hidden corners of Stanley Park, and learn the secrets—and dangers—behind big-city crime.

Vancouver Kids arrives just in time to celebrate the 125th birthday of the city of Vancouver on April 6th, 2011. It is the fifth book in the courageous Kids series, which includes Kidmonton: Stories of River City Kids, Rocky Mountain Kids, Island Kids, and Northern Kids. For more about this excit-ing series, please visit www.courageouskids.ca.

I kept running, thinking about how I would spend hundreds of thousands of dollars if I were the bank thieves. I wondered how far away the robbers were now. They were probably in California, riding in brand new cars and eating candy. I wished I was in their gang. I could be their leader. “George,” they’d ask. “What’s our next move?”

I slowed down to a walk, feeling out of breath. I sat down on the side of the ravine footbridge and opened my lunch sack. All that crime had made me hungry. I bit into my apple and thought about what food really rich people eat.

As I chewed, something strange caught my eye underneath the footbridge. It looked like a bag tucked beneath the boards. Maybe someone had dropped it by mistake. I bent down and pulled it out into the open.

It was a little cloth pouch, all tightly bundled. I opened it up and peeked inside.

I blinked. It was stuffed full of money.
