Celebrate America’sBirthday

Members of the SecondContinental Congress adopted thefinal draft of the Declaration ofIndependence on July 4, 1776.

In the years following theRevolutionary War, July Fourthwould be marked with speeches, military events, parades andfireworks.

In 1941, Congress declared JulyFourth a federal holiday.

Ask your grandchildren howthey plan to celebrate the Fourthof July. Tell them how youcelebrated at their age. Mostmunicipalities do not allowpeople to set off their ownfireworks, but it used to be acommon practice.

A Cricket SymphonyThe sound of crickets chirping

is relaxing for many people. Asthe months get warmer, thecrickets begin to make moremusic. Science can explain howthe temperature affects thenumber of chirps a cricketproduces. There is even aformula for figuring out thetemperature based on thenumber of chirps.

Crickets are cold-bloodedand, because of this, they takeon the temperature thatsurrounds them. As thetemperature rises, the number ofchirps a cricket produces alsoincreases.

To obtain a rough estimate ofwhat the temperature is indegrees Fahrenheit, count thenumber of chirps you hear in 15seconds. Add 37 to that number, and you will have theapproximate outsidetemperature.

While you enjoy the greatoutdoors, listen to the cricketsand try using the formula todetermine the temperature.
