Students today can’t prepare bark to calculate their problems……….. They depend on slates which aremore expensive. What will they dowhen the slate is dropped and it breaks? They will be unable to write.

A quick primer on A.T.

• The provision of assistive technology for special education students may only be determined as a result of an assistive technology evaluation.

• After reviewing this AT evaluation an ARD committee then determines whether or not assistive technology is required for a student to access the general curriculum.

• The ARD committee does not recommend a specific brand or specific model.

When Parents Want Something Specific……..

Unfortunately Accidents Happen

Guidelines:

• Student use of the device during class remains at the discretion of the teacher according to the needs of the lesson and the circumstances of the classroom at the time.

• To ensure that students have access to the device, it should either arrive with sufficient charge to last for the length of the instructional day, or arrive with a way to recharge or power the device.

• Students who use web-enabled devices from home may have access to the wireless Internet.

Guidelines:

• DISD is not liable for any loss or damage or theft incurred, nor can it load any software onto a student web-enabled device. Students should secure their devices from theft.

• All student devices should be clearly labeled with the student’s name.

If a breakage occurs…..

• Should the device from home become unavailable, the district will provide a device that meets the needs of the students as identified in the assistive technology evaluation and previously determined by the ARD committee. This device may not be identical to the unavailable home device.

What If the ARD Decides no A.T.?

• Parents may still send a device from home.

• The use of such a device falls under the general guidelines provided to all students under the “Electronic Communication and Data Management DISD Acceptable Use Policy”.
