Dear reader, Welcome to a new edition of Infosylva. The new forestry website of Vanuatu, issued in collaboration with the FAO/GEF Forestry and Protected area Management Project in the Pacific islands, highlights two of the most important components of that project: promoting the sustainable use of the endangered biodiversity of those islands and strengthening the capacity for community-based conservation management. (In English) The pivotal role of forests for food security and climate change mitigation was stressed at the final meeting of the UN Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, in order to better recognize their invaluable contribution across the range of SDGs. (In English) A Civil Rights Organization in a newly published study reports that in Asia and Africa governments control up to 99% of the forests where indigenous communities live. In Latin America, however, a new tendency is emerging, as almost 40% of forests inhabited by indigenous communities are owned directly by them. (In English and Spanish) In Haiti, massive deforestation has reduced forested lands to less than 2% of the total country area and is now threatening the last forest sanctuary, at the heart of a national park, besieged by great numbers of people in search of food and fuelwood. (In French) In Guinea, the UNESCO National Commission is seeking financial support from its parent organization and other UN agencies for reforestation projects in schools and other public spaces in the capital city of Conakry. Estimado lector/a, Bienvenidos a una nueva edición de Infosylva. El nuevo sitio web del Departamento Forestal de Vanuatu, publicado en colaboración con el Proyecto FAO / FMAM de manejo forestal y de las áreas protegidas en las islas del Pacífico, pone de relieve dos de los aspectos más sobresalientes de este proyecto: la promoción del uso sostenible de la biodiversidad en peligro de extinción de esas islas y el fortalecimiento de la capacidad de gestión comunitaria de los recursos forestales por su conservación. (En inglés) En la reunión final del Grupo de Trabajo Abierto de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, se destacó la función fundamental de los bosques para la seguridad alimentaria y la mitigación del cambio climático, con el fin que esa inestimable contribución de los bosques sea presente y bien reconocida a lo largo de todos los ODS. (En inglés) En un estudio recientemente publicado, una organización de derechos civiles señala que en Asia y África, los gobiernos controlan hasta el 99 % de los bosques en los que viven las comunidades indígenas. En América Latina, sin embargo, una nueva tendencia está surgiendo, ya que casi el 40 % de los bosques habitados por las comunidades indígenas está poseído por ellas. Le nouveau site web des forêts de Vanuatu, publié en collaboration avec le Projet FAO / FEM sur la gestion des forêts et des zones protégées dans les îles du Pacifique, met en évidence deux des éléments les plus importants de ce projet: la promotion de l'utilisation durable de la biodiversité en danger de ces îles et le renforcement de la

capacité de gestion communautaire des ressources forestières pour leur conservation. (En anglais) Le rôle crucial des forêts pour la sécurité alimentaire et l'atténuation du changement climatique a été souligné lors de la dernière réunion du Groupe de travail à composition non limitée des Nations Unies sur les Objectifs de développement durable, afin que cette précieuse contribution des forêts soit reconnue dans l'ensemble des ODD. (En anglais) Une Organisation des droits civils, dans une étude publiée récemment, indique que, en Asie et en Afrique, les gouvernements contrôlent jusqu'à 99% des forêts où vivent des communautés indigènes. En Amérique latine, cependant, une nouvelle tendance se dessine, dans laquelle près de 40% des forêts habitées par des communautés indigènes sont possédées directement par elles. Evolution of African tropical wood markets: Ethics and pragmatism for a sustainable development of forest resources Sub-Saharan Africa, especially the Congo Basin, is at a major turning point in its history. This is bringing about or will bring about changes in terms of the consumption, or more precisely the domestic consumption, of forest products. On the other hand, export markets are displaying different or even divergent requirements: a demand for sophisticated, legal products for Europe, while Asia is seeking raw materials. Forests and landslides: the role of trees and forests in the prevention of landslides and rehabilitation of landslide-affected areas in Asia With natural disasters becoming increasingly frequent in Asia, interest in maintaining forests for the environmental services they provide is growing. In several Asian countries, floods, droughts and landslides have led to major policy realignments that have centered on forests and forestry. However, the resulting policies have often been criticized for their poor technical understanding and disregard for socio-economic considerations. This emphasizes the need for policies to be based on sound science and balanced assessments of the distribution of costs and benefits across society. International Day of Forests Forests and trees sustain and protect us, providing clean air and water, safeguarding biodiversity and acting as a buffer against climate change. For many people, they also offer food, shelter and employment. It is up to us in turn to sustain and protect our forests. Join FAO in celebrating the International Day of Forests on 21 March.
