bringing the wonder of nature to children’s indoor...

•- Over the next year, Wonder will be filled with ideas for using free tools available on the World Forum website in the Environmental Action Kit: Connecting the World’s Children with Nature, which can be accessed at www.worldforumfoundation.org/nature. In this edition we’ll explore one of the “Universal Principles for Connecting Children with Nature” that were devel- oped by leaders and members of the Nature Action Collaborative for Children: Nature should be integral in the design process of children’s indoor and outdoor environments. We’ll be especially focusing on the impor- tance of bringing nature indoors. In the future we’ll look more closely at ideas for developing and enhancing nature-filled outdoor spaces. Two parts of the Environmental Action Kit can help you use this principle more fully in your work. The first is in the Resources and Professional Articles section where you’ll find “Benefits of Nature to Children” by Louise Chawla. This fact sheet summarizes several studies that identify what children gain from deeper connections with nature, includ- ing increased concentration and school achievement, and a stronger foundation for life-long environmental stewardship. Feel free to share it with staff and families. A second resource is in the Educator and Family Materials section of the Environ- mental Action Kit. Click on the Toolkit for Educators and go to pages 15-17 to find an adventure experience called “Breathing with a Tree.” All of the activi- ties in this section, called ‘adventures,’ have been designed in consultation with educators, designers, and environ- mentalists worldwide. Each adventure encourages children to develop a deeper appreciation for one universal element of our worldwide environment, such as water, air, or sunshine. As your children enjoy these activities, let them know that NEWSLETTER OF THE NATURE ACTION COLLABORATIVE FOR CHILDREN MAY/JUNE 2012 Bringing the Wonder of Nature to Children’s Indoor Environments children all over the world are sharing the same experiences. It’s a wonderful way to encourage feelings of unity as human beings, a great need in our world today. So what is the “Breathing with a Tree” adventure all about? Because air can’t be seen, it’s often difficult for children to understand what it is. Helping children tune into how their bodies feel as they breathe in fresh air heightens awareness and appreciation. With increased aware- ness often comes a desire to do some- thing to improve conditions and care for our surroundings. This is why each adventure is followed by a section called Take Action. 100 NACC NEWSLETTER www.WorldForumFoundation.org EXCHANGE MAY/JUNE 2012

Wonder, the newsletter of the NACC, welcomes submissions from all NACC members. Please join us at: www.worldforumfoundation.org/nature.

The NACC Leadership Team is a core group of early childhood educators, designers, and landscape architects who came together in 2006 with a dream to change the world for young children. They represent six continents across the globe, and serve as key contact points for others around the world who have a desire to improve the lives of young children.

The Leadership Team meets periodically to discuss strategies for increasing NACC’s outreach and membership, and to find new ways for all of us to work together to further our common mission.
