BBC Rowing VisionThe aim of the College Rowing Club is to bring out the best in all boys, to have fun, to develop personal character, to educate and enlighten, and to encourage and empower. Through rowing we will provide opportunities to the boys, set the bar high and expect great things. We will challenge boys to take risks, be brave and embrace new experiences. We will provide a safe, nurturing and supportive environment. We will help them get back up when they fall and start again without fear. We will empower boys and give them the confidence to take on the world.

THE STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT OF ALL BOYS HOLISTICALLY WITHIN THE BBC ROWING PROGRAM.

BBC ROWING YEARS 7 TO FIRST VIII

Core ValuesValues shape how we behave, how we treat other people, and how we make decisions with confidence and clarity.

“We will encourage

and empower you - not just

coach you.

The BBC Rowing Program aims to use rowing as a vehicle to instil a strong value-set in boys who participate in the sport. To develop these values, the Rowing Program takes the boys on a journey during their time in the sport where we develop different areas of learning that enable them to grow, develop, mature, and become educated and independent.

Learning AreasThe learning areas that we aim to develop are designed to provide a platform from which a good all-around development can occur. The six learning areas are:

• Leadership• Communication• Strategy• Psychology• Physical• Technical

Our Expectations of Rowers• Work hard at improving academic

studies• Be punctual to meetings and training• Use training routines as a model for

time organisation in other arenas• Take pride in the uniform worn for

training and racing• Take care and responsibility for

equipment and respect the facilities provided

• Follow all rules as detailed in the Rowing Handbook

• Be supportive of all rowers regardless of their ability or age group

• Be a great sportsman• Represent the College at all times• Accept responsibility when called

About the ProgramBBC Rowing is part of GPS Championship Sport with a number of lead up regattas held in Term 1 prior to the GPS Head of the River held in early March. The competition schedule varies dependant on year level with the program split into two main elements: the GPS Competition and the Junior Rowing Program.

The GPS Competition consists of the following events:

• Year 10: First Quad, Second Quad, Third Quad, Fourth Quad, Fifth Quad Sixth Quad

• Year 11: First VIII, Second VIII, Third VIII

• Year 12: Open First VIII, Open Second VIII, Open Third VIII

Supplementary events are held for additional crews in each year level but they do not count towards the Championships.

The Junior Rowing Program consists of: the Year 9 Program which follows a similar format to the Year 10 Quads and BBC fields 10 crews; and the Year 8 Learn to Row Program which introduces boys to the sport of rowing and 60 boys can progress to a racing program hosted by the GPS Association as well as a number of ‘friendlies’ with other schools in Term 1.

Coaching ProgramAll sports by their very nature have to focus on the technical and physical elements of the actions that are involved.

‘The What’ It is easy to focus on the technical minutiae when it is far more important as a coach or educator of boys to focus on how the message is delivered in order for it to be effective

‘The How’The Rowing Program places a great emphasis on ‘The How’ and our coaches are driven to provide exceptional experiences for the boys by delivering powerful messages that can be transferred to all elements of their lives.

BBC has at its heart a philosophy on how to teach boys. The College aims to deliver this message to the boys by living this philosophy in everything we do. It is not enough for boys to just accumulate knowledge, we need to teach them how to think. Not only to solve problems, but to recognize them in the first place. To challenge the status quo and make the world a better place. Our rowing philosophy follows this closely, but from a sporting perspective. It is not enough to just encourage boys, although this is important, we must enable them to become the best version of themselves.

Our coaches are guided by the five key principles outlined on the next page. This ensures that our messages, teaching, philosophies, beliefs, and our goals are not only achieved but become the philosophies and beliefs of every boy within the Rowing Program.

“We will inspire you, back you, nurture you, care for you and about you.

BBC Coaching PrinciplesAt BBC, it is All about the boy. We know boys. We speak boy.

Our coaching principles follow BBC’s BRAVE principles:

B – Boy Focus

We know boys. We understand what they are capable of and what they need. Every decision we make, every speech we deliver is aimed at inspiring boys. We deliver a program that will make the boy into a man.

R – Relationships

We are the BBC Rowing community and work hard to establish our own culture. We take the time to build positive relationships with each rower, each parent, and every supporter. We get to know every boy in the program. His strengths, his weaknesses, his struggles, his triumphs, his goals. We want his time in the BBC Rowing Club to be memorable.

A – Above and beyond

Lead by example. If we expect our boys to strive to do everything possible to succeed, we must do it as well. We throw ourselves at opportunities and provide every opportunity to our boys so that they can feel they can take risks, be brave and embrace the new experience, regardless of the outcome.

V – Values-Led

We are the role models to our rowers. Always consider the well-being of every boy in the crew. Care, listen and make decisions that are not only considerate but will ultimately get the best out of the rower. Be a proud ambassador of BBC Rowing. Bleed Green White Black.

E – Empowerment

We need to produce men who have greater confidence and capabilities than their competitors. We need to empower boys to want to be leaders, take risks, strive for success, and take responsibility. This enables them to dream and achieve their goals with clear eyes and full hearts.
