Feral cats migrate to areas that contain food, and residential areas like Brisbane have many food sources. Feral cats in our area eat household food, garbage, rats, mice, birds, and smaller numbers of lizards, amphibians and insects. Feral cats kill rodents at about 2-3 times the rate that they kill birds.

Removing all feral cats in residential Brisbane is not feasible. Poisoning cats would poison the food chain, and risk poisoning domesticated animals. Trapping and euthanizing cats would be expensive, and even if all cats were eliminated, cats from outside of Bris-bane would immigrate and repopulate the town.

At this time there is no Brisbane pro-gram to remove diseased or unaltered cats from the local population, and thus the cat population may be unhealthy and growing in size.

Councilmember Sepi Richardson announced her retirement ef-fective December 29, 2013. At the City Council meeting on Feb-ruary 19th, she was honored for her 15 years of extraordinary service to the City, County, Region, and State. Congratulations, Sepi, on your retirement!

Due to this impasse, the Council decided to call an election for November 2013. This election will be held to fill three Council seats. All three of those seats will be for a term of four years ending in November, 2017.

March and BeyondArt Expert Lecture: Lords of the Samurai traced 500 years of the art and history of the Samurai warrior class, preserved by one of the leading families of Japan. This unrivaled collection was on exhibit at the Asian Art Museum in 2009. Currently, it can only be seen in a small family museum in Tokyo, but it will be on display on Saturday, March 23 at 2 PM in the Library.

On the final Wednesday of March we are thrilled to host Vered, a musician with a background in musical therapy and clinical psychology, and winner of the Parents’ Choice Gold Award, perform a special concert for parents, caregivers, and their 0-4 year olds. You won’t want to miss this special event at 11:30 am on Wednesday the 27th! Laurie Berkner named Vered’s CD Good Morning My Love as one of her favorites in USA Today! Vered focuses on strategies for parents and children to bond through music, and her enjoyable, warm performances integrate the benefits

of music and psychological theory regarding early infancy. Her songs eloquently express the changes both parents and young children experience together.

April 29th-May 5thDitch Your Device week is just around the corner and the Brisbane Library will be hosting a week’s worth of exciting programming. Are you up to the challenge? Willing to reduce or give up your smart-phone time, computer time, and television time, and instead focus on less techie but no less complex or rewarding experiences? We invite you to make an effort to unplug and explore the joy of making a craft, having an uninterrupted conversation, playing with your child, or reading a favorite story aloud.
