What Dynamite is and How it is Made.Few people know what Dynamite is, though the word is in common use. It is

a giant gun powder, that is an explosive material, varying in strength and safety ofhandling, according to the percentage of nitro-glycerine it contains. Nitro-glyce-rine, whence it derives its strength, is composed of ordinary glycerine and nitric acid, compounded together in certain proportions and at a certain temperature. Nitro-glycerine, though not the strongest explosive known, being exceeded in power bynitrogen and other products of chemistry, is thus far the most terrible explosivemanufactured to any extent. Nitro-glycerine by itself is not safe to handle, hencedynamite is preferred. It is extensively made and consumed in the United Statesunder various names of Giant, Hercules, Jupiter and Atlas powders, all of whichcontain anywhere from thirty to eighty per cent, of nitro-glycerine, the residue ofthe compound being made up of rotten stone, non-explosive earth, sawdust, char-coal, plaster of Paris, black powder, or some ether substance that takes up theglycerine and makes a porous spongy mass.

Nitro-glycerine was discovered by Salvero, an Italian chemist, in 1845. Dyna-mite is prepared by simply kneading with the naked hands twenty-five percent, ofinfusorial earth and seventy-five per cent, of nitro-glycerine until the mixture as-sumes a putty condition, not unlike moist brown sugar. Before mixing the infusorialearth is calcined in a furnace, in order to burn out all organic matter, and it is alsosifted to free it of large grains. While still moist it is squeezed into cartridges, which are prepared of parchment paper, and the firing is done by fulminate of silverin copper capsules provided with patent exploders.Nnro-glycerine is made of nitric acid one part and sulphuric acid two parts, towhich is added ordinary glycerine, and the mixture is well washed with pure water. The infusion is composed cf small microscopic silicious shells, which have lost theirliving creatures. The cellular parts receive the nitro-glycerine and hold it bycapillary attraction, both inside and out. The earth is very light. Water is expelledfrom it by means of a furnace, and then, in the form of a powder, it is mixed withnitro-glycerine. Nitro-glycerine has a sweet aromatic pungent taste and the pecu-liar property of causing a violent headache when placed in a small quantity on thetongue or wrist. It freezes at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, becoming a white, half crys-talized mass, which must be melted by the application of water to a temperatureabout 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

WORTH REMEMBERING.The following simple rule enables anyone with the commonest mathematical

education to ascertain the day of the week upon which any day of the month inthis century fell or will fall on :

To the given year, rejecting the century, add its fourth part, rejecting the fraction. To this sum adcTthe day of the month and the ratio for the given month, as pertable below. Divide the sum by seven, and the remainder (not the quotient) willbe the day of the week, counting Sunday as the first day :

TABLE OF RATIOS.For Januray add 3 For J uly add 2For February add 6 For August add 5For March add 6 For September add 1For A pril add 2 For October add 3For May add 1 For November add 6For June add For December add 1For Leap-YearsFor Januray add 2 For February add 5The other months same as other table.

EXAMPLE.Suppose we desire to ascertain what day of the week the 5th of April, 1841,

fell on :Put down 41Add its fourth part 10Add day of the month 5Add ratio of month 2Divided by 7)58(8

56Remainder 2The answer is Monday, the second day of the week.

How to Tell the Age of any Person. There is a good deal of amusement in the following magical table of figures. It

will enable you to tell how old the young ladies are. Just r and this table to ayoung lady and request her to tell you in which col lmn or columns her age iscontained, and add together the figures at the top of th e columns in which her ageis found, and you lave the great secre . Thus, suppose her a:.;e to be 17, you willfind that number n the first and fifth columns ; idd the first figures of these twocolumns. H ere is the magic table1 2 4 8 16 32

Bristol's Sugar-coated Vegetable Pills are a safe andcretain cure for Dyspepsia. To Purify the Cistern.

Malodorous cisterns are a common experience especially duringthe summer months and still more especially when filled by spring andearly summer rains. Whatever may be the chemistry of the cause, the remedy is very simple. Violent and through agitation of the en-tire contents of the cistern, continued, say half an hour, and repeatedweekly duiing the warm season, is a sure cure. A cord and bucket, with a weight attached to sink the bucket, are the implements. Letthe bucket sink to the bottom, then draw it repeatedly to and abovethe surface, and repeat the operation in quick succession until thewater is thoroughly aerted and the trouble will have disappeared.
