THE San Francisco TravelAssociation yesterday kicked off ahuge week of US destinationpromotion in Australia, with a 17-strong delegation hosting a medialunch followed by a travel agentevent last night. Several US regions are inAustralasia for the annual VisitUSA showcase, and San Franciscois one of those who are alsoholding their own events duringthe period. And with strong airlift fromAustralia to the US west coast,San Francisco doesn’t see thedemand slackening any time

soon, with Australia classed as along term growth market. About 300,000 Aussies went toSan Francisco last year - andinterestingly the figures showthere was “no decline at all”when Qantas pulled off the SFOroute, with other carriers such asUnited Airlines and Air NewZealand maintaining or evenboosting capacity to the city, while many Australians also arrivefrom other parts of the USA. There’s also lots of new stuff toexplore in San Francisco, where abooming economy due to thesocial media revolution (Facebookand Twitter are both based in theBay Area) has seen an influx ofyoung, hip professionals and acorresponding rise in funky newneighbourhoods and hip eateries. THE who’s who of the Australian cruise industry got together over theweekend for what will be the last ICCA Cruise industry awards evening. Of course the ICCA becomes CLIA Australasia as a result of mergingwith the global body and future events will be held under the CLIAbrand. We all got to meet Christine Duffy, the President and CEO ofCLIA who came in from the USA to get to know as many people as shecan within the Australian cruise industry. I am sure that this added boost of the CLIA will help the AustralianCruise industry on the many challenges that the industry faces over thecoming years. The Hilton was the host hotel and in true travel industry event style theevening delivered a delightfully enjoyable celebration for travel agentswho love to cruise and love to sell cruises. A big congratulations to BrettJardine and his team for delivering another fantastic event. One of the highlights was the acknowledgement of Geoff McGearywith the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Cruise Industrybeing awarded to the APT founder. Geoff accepted the award in thehumble style that he is known for and it was evident that this was a verypopular and well received decision by those present. An amazing careerand contribution by an Aussie who has been an enormous influence overthe now very successful cruise industry in Australia. There are many great stories within the cruise industry and clearlytravel agents who have adopted cruise as an important part of theirbusiness are reveling in the success that cruise presents to them. Awards were also presented for some really clever cruises that travelagents arranged along with marketing efforts and it was very evidentthat those who were picking up the awards love cruise. The ICCA know CLIA deliver fantastic benefits to travelagents and I would encourage any travel agent who isselling cruise to get involved with CLIA as the knowledgeand benefits to support the industry on this excitingcategory is awesome.

WELCOME to Money Talk, TD’sTue feature on what theAustralian dollar is doing.

RESERVE bank board membersmust have seen it coming. Last week’s decision to keepinterest rates on hold is provingto be a move made out of cautionrather than optimism, as poorerthan expected retail sales figureserred on the side of caution. The Australian dollar is hoveringnervously close to parity with theUSD again, with relatively flatperformances from Asian andEuropean markets restricting theAUD from any real gains. That being said, tourism toJapan could be on the rise as theAUD approaches 100 JPY yen.Wholesale rates this morning:
