Welcome to the British Construction Industry Awards 2016.

This Autumn promises to be one of huge importance to the British construction industry. A raft of government announcements around major infrastructure projects are promised; announcements that will either serve to give the industry a major boost or, alternatively, raise serious causes for concern.

The industry has been working hard to make its case, particularly through the ICE-led National Needs Assessment. This fact-based assessment of the key projects will be most welcome.

The British Construction Industry Awards play an important role alongside this. All the projects shortlisted here tonight are incredible, and every one – big or small – is a cast-iron reason why

investing in infrastructure delivers for communities and societies.

This year we had 159 entries in total and shortlisted 44 UK projects, 5 international schemes, and 41 more people or products providing specialist services to projects in our general categories.

The task of picking winners fell to our judges, for which I and our team are hugely grateful. It is a proud feature of the awards that

every UK shortlisted project is visited by the judges. The energy and enthusiasm shown on the judging days was once again incredible.

As ever our judges sought to recognise the projects where genuinely collaborative teams controlled costs, and where quality, safety and delivery on time were also a priority. And above all, our judges tried to recognise

projects which have delivered for the end users.

Application of Technology Award

Work to widen 20km of the A1(M) between Leeming and Barton involved large scale use of Trimble survey controllers and total stations to match pavement designs to pavement construction in real time.

Contractors laid the pavement using Aggregate Industries’ fleet of Volvo Titan ABG 9820 heavy duty pavers equipped with the Trimble paver control system which manages the surface tolerance and level to within plus or

minus 6mm. Drivelines were

established and the height and slope of the screed was controlled by referring to the design model loaded into the control unit.

IG’s design team identified the need for an easy to install system for suspending brick from the underside of masonry support, producing precision finished brick soffit details.

Temporary Works (Building) Award

Network Rail is overseeing a £30M renovation project to restore Brunel’s Grade 1 listed Paddington Station roof, built in 1854.

The construction team developed a fully suspended rolling scaffolding system to provide access to the 14,910m2 train shed roof at Paddington Station.

The scaffolding is lightweight, yet strong and designed for maximum reuse. Work had to take place without obstructing the station

below, so that the station could remain in full operation. Each of the three roof arches built by Brunel over 150 years ago is 220m long and spans between 20m and 32m.

Logistical and engineering constraints presented a challenge to designers of the temporary works for a series of five elliptical columns in the concourse area of the underground Paddington Crossrail station.

The station box construction method was top down. The box was formed within a perimeter diaphragm wall with a series of plunge columns sunk through the central axis to provide temporary support for the structure.

The challenge for the

Byrne Bros team was to construct the permanent elliptical columns to facilitate load transfer.

The top-down construction method blocked off overhead access, restricting lifting availability and capacity.

Temporary slab openings adjacent to each column also limited loading allowances.

Building of the Year Award(Up to £10M)

The Royal Court Theatre is one of Liverpool’s most important cultural venues, and the refurbishment is intended to regenerate the existing three tier auditorium and make better use of the front of house areas.

The budget was a modest £2.5M and keeping within it required close collaboration between the design team and client, the Royal Court Theatre Trust.

Servicing and maintenance strategies had to be robust but

flexible and resulted in the use of a polished concrete with underfloor heating, and minimal ventilation and lighting within the ceiling.

Interior and exterior materials were selected to highlight what is new, while complementing the existing red brick and walnut panelling.

The Royal Court Theatre is one of Liverpool’s most important cultural venues, and the refurbishment is intended to regenerate the existing three tier auditorium and make better use of the front of house areas.

The budget was a modest £2.5M and keeping within it required close collaboration between the design team and client, the Royal Court Theatre Trust.

Servicing and maintenance strategies had to be robust but

flexible and resulted in the use of a polished concrete with underfloor heating, and minimal ventilation and lighting within the ceiling.

Interior and exterior materials were selected to highlight what is new, while complementing the existing red brick and walnut panelling.

The purpose of the £5.6M West Rhyl Coastal Defence was to deliver the final phase of a scheme which has reduced flood risk to 1,700 properties in West Rhyl and opened up the area for future regeneration. The overall project value demonstrates exceptional value engineering, and the use of innovative techniques to combine an aesthetically pleasing public space with the practicalities of flood protection over a length of 470m.

The limited design period of six months took account of the availability of materials, tidal working and access, including requirements for the safe lifting of the Dycel revetment mats, safe haul roads and the protection of the high voltage windfarm cables.

Relining a substantial section of operational rail tunnel had not previously been undertaken anywhere worldwide.

London Underground (LU) replaced 359 tunnel lining rings over a 215m section of the Jubilee Line, while keeping it fully operational. All works took place within a two and a half hour nightly working window.

The tunnel section runs through water bearing Lambeth Group clay and sand beds, carrying the risk of water sand ingress

and partial collapse.Had nothing been done,

there was an increased risk of tunnel collapse. LU applied digital engineering, building information modelling and virtual design to deliver a collaborative solution.

The £675M Lee Tunnel was completed on time and to budget, after a six year construction programme. It is the largest single project ever commissioned by Thames Water and the deepest tunnel ever built under London. This will eventually intercept all the existing outfalls presently discharging combined sewage and stormwater effluent to the River Thames, . The tunnel captures the largest combined sewer outfall discharge, at

Abbey Mills, accounting for 40% of the total discharges. The effluent from Abbey Mills will be diverted into the Lee Tunnel, constructed between Abbey Mills and the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works.

The £110M, 5.5km South Devon Highway, with a major flyover and 40 structures, is a high quality engineering accomplishment of substantial legacy to the South West. This, much needed road, will act as a catalyst for growth in Torbay.

The project is an example of exemplary community liaison. Two dedicated public liaison officers were appointed to the project to manage communications. A community liaison group,

a platform for the public voice, ran for the project’s duration.

Numerous charity events were held by the project team – one raised £50,000 for the local Rowcroft Hospice.

London’s biggest environmental improvement project to date included tough performance criteria within a very tight budget. So, when it came to designing the mechanical equipment and three of the fi ve huge shafts on the Lee Tunnel, completely fresh thinking was needed. The sustainability benefi ts achieved weren’t just during construction – they’ll be appreciated for a century and more.

The Sacred Heart of Kericho Diocese in Kenya, is approximately 250km north west of Nairobi.The aspiration was to create a cathedral that integrated seamlessly with its landscape setting, in aesthetic and functional terms. Its tiled roof is now a distinctive form in Kericho’s hills and valleys. The building also combines a European architectural heritage with the local natural materials of the rural community it serves, including timber and slate.

Its complex geometry was accommodated by an insitu construction method specific to Kenya, with the size of each structural frame requiring a complex pouring system for the concrete.

Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award

The purpose built, £250M Alder Hey Children’s Hospital development is one of the most ambitious medical construction projects ever undertaken in the UK, and Laing O’Rourke’s fastest ever hospital build. This innovative, groundbreaking project involved the true integration of engineering and architecture, and a huge amount of collaboration between the partners involved.

The design integrates the hospital with the

surrounding landscape, equipping all rooms with natural views and easy access to the neighbouring park. The majority of the workforce was local to the area, which added to the tremendous sense of motivation and pride felt by the team.
