    DESIGNED TO MEET MARKETREQUIREMENTS

    The packaging machine industry is

noted for its advanced technology, dueto the high level of automation of thepackaging lines and the intensive useof advanced electronic components

In all types of packaging machinery- food and beverage as well aspharmaceutical and cosmetics -each component has to meet thestrict requirements of the individualequipment.

This is to guarantee the continuity ofproduction and the conformity of thepacked product to quality standards. For many years, Carlo Gavazzi

photoelectric, inductive and capacitivesensors have proven to be the bestsolution in applications for filling andinspection.

In shrink wrapping applications, careful control of heating is essentialfor good results. Solid state relaysare used to switch the heaters on andoff in order to maintain the correcttemperature.

Furthermore, the packaging industryneeds safety devices to guarantee thesafety of the operators engaged in thework area, ensuring safe operation of

    the machines.

Carlo Gavazzi light curtains, magneticswitches and key switches detect

intrusion into a non safe zone andshut down the machinery via a safetymodule.

For all its products, Carlo Gavazziprovides easy installation, highprecision and long term reliability.

Carlo Gavazzi offers a completerange of automation components forthe packaging industry. In a bottling line UA ultrasonic sensorsare used to verify that the appropriatelevel of a product is in the containerbefore it is sealed and shipped.Ultrasonic sensors are also used tomeasure the level of ingredients either liquid or solid in a container. The continuous analog output signalallows for better control of the process. The level of solid material, such asground coffee, coffee beans or flour,

can be accurately detected usingphotoelectric sensors. The new PA /PH 18 sensors come witha new mounting bracket which allows

fast mounting and space saving, butalso has a smooth design. Axial, radialand square versions are available.Important benefits are that objects donot hit the sensors so often and theconveyor can be cleaned much moreeasily. For accurate control of the filling

process a PD30 sensor can alsoprovide an output signal when theproduct is at the appropriate fill level.A background suppression sensor setsthe detecting depth, excluding theshiny bottom of the tin, assuring safedetection irrespective of the colour ormaterial of the contents.

Carlo Gavazzi products have manyapplications in the inspection-detectionfield. For bottling lines that have darkeror less transparent bottles, PA18through beam sensors can be used todetect the presence of the bottles. Thenew family of products is from 40 %to 60 % smaller than existing housings.

The sensor has a manual potentiometerand for some versions no adjustment isnecessary: you just connect the sensorand you are up and running.Furthermore, the specialised opticsof the PD60CNG - combined witha reflector - are perfect for detectingclear bottles on a conveyor.

To verify that a bottle cap is present onthe bottle a PD60 fiber optic amplifierwith a fiber optic cable and lens arepositioned above the bottles andprogrammed to detect any reflectionfrom the bottle cap.The PD12 colour sensor recognises upto four separate colours, and gives anoutput for each. For instance, it canverify that a multi-colour sponge ispositioned correctly, so that packagingis consistent and orderly. In some confectionery applications, it isnecessary to detect if a cake decoration

is present or properly positioned. The PD30 diffuse sensor can recognisethe coloured decoration on top of thecake.

Multiple bottles are bundled togetherand shrink-wrapped. Carlo Gavazzisolid state relays (RM or RG series)allow fast switching of heaters thatenable accurate control of the processtemperature thus maintaining an evenshrink of the plastic wrap. Solid statesolutions permit frequent switchingwithout affecting the lifetime of theswitch, unlike mechanical contactors. In order to verify that the shrink-wraphas been added, a PD60CNG clearobject sensor is positioned to focus atthe level of the bottle necks. If the shrink-

wrap is present, the clear object sensorwill have a continuous output as thepackage passes by.Diffuse reflective photoelectric sensors

with long detecting distance (PD112)detect goods on the pallet to ensurethat wrapping is stopped ate therequired height. In hot-melt heating systems the hightemperature ECH sensors have proventheir capability and reliability.Other applications include automaticcontinuous processes of thermoforming, filling and sealing. The RG range offersa wide variety of solutions, starting fromjust solid state switching of heaters tomore sophisticated solutions that apartfrom the switching function integrate

monitoring features that are able todetect load and system malfunctions toguarantee a reliable thermal process.

Once a container is filled, the next stepis to apply the appropriate label.Contrast sensors (PD60CNK) are usedto detect the presence of a mark on abottleneck label, which confirms thatthe bottle is in correct position for themain label to be applied. Furthermore, these sensors detect the presence ofsecurity bands that are required onmany bottles and containers. Theyrecognise the difference between thesecurity band and bottle cap.Precise control of labels, even smalllabels, is an important part of the

packaging process. The surfaces of thelabels are often reflective. The photoelectric proximity sensorsprovide the necessary sensitivity for

maximum reliability.Colour sensors are used for detectionof coloured labels, marks, tags, wires, liquids, etc. The PD12 is a fibreoptic amplifier made specifically forrecognition of 1 or 1 to 4 colours.Teaching of the colours is easilyperformed by means of the Teach-infunction. Each colour has a separateoutput which can be delayed up to 5secs by means of the built-in timer.Detection of labels, marks and doublesheets, as well as holes and edges, aretypical applications for the PF80 fork

Carlo Gavazzis safety devices areespecially popular in the packagingmachinery market segment. They must beable to prevent access to dangerous areas, until the machines are completely stopped. For example, the new Certus configurablesafety module offers up to 128 inputs and 16pairs of programmable solid state outputsin a compact modular system, managingand monitoring at the same time safetysensors and commands such as: safetylight curtains, photocells, emergency stops,two-hand controls, mechanical switches, laser scanners, and safety mats. Certus is

certified to the highest safety levels: SIL+,SILCL 3, PL e and Cat.4, and its advantagesto the packaging industry are endless.Safety light curtains types 2 and 4 with

muting function provide easy access toload and unload optimising productivityoutput. The type 4 safety light curtains alsofeature the EDM function to control thereliability of external devices. The safetymodules (used with safety light curtains, safety photo sensors, emergency stopbuttons or safety magnetic switches) close

the safety control loop. Our safety magneticswitches (SMS, CLS) are commonly used inpharmaceutical, and food and beverageplants, thanks to their ability to be easilycleaned of germs, bacteria, etc. All of thismakes Carlo Gavazzi the clear choicefor safety components in your packagingmachinery applications.

    Safety devices and energy efficiency

Carlo Gavazzi offers a vast array of

products to improve energy efficiency and

to ensure the monitoring of entire processes

    - all from one source.

    Energy management components, for

    instance, provide vital information so

    operators can identify consumption trends

and take corrective action. EM21 72 DIN

energy meters can monitor all the main

parameters of an electric line or load.

    Monitoring relays DPB01/PP01 or DPB71

    monitor phase sequence-loss and over-

under voltage of the mains to set up a check

    system.

Carlo Gavazzi timers - available in four

    different housings (standard DIN-rail,

    Plug-in, 48x48 and MiniD housing) -

provide correct, reliable solutions for every

    application.

Stack lights, beacons and buzzers are

used on packaging machinery as visual or

audible signalling if any malfunction occurs.

Emergency stop switches allow the complete

shutdown of systems or processes to protect

operators and avoid damage to the

    machines.
