Notmanynetworkmanagers wouldcall 10Mbit/sEthernetabroadbandtechnology. Theywouldreservethatphrase (iftheyuseditatall) for100Mbit/stechnologies.

Thedefinition ofbroadbandalso changesastechnological capabilityincreases. UntilrecentlyISDN2at128kbit/s wasregardedasbroadband, comparedwith the 64kbit/sbandwidth ofan ordinarytelephone

    line. The DTIs currentdefinition ofbroadbandis2Mbit/sandaboveandnextgenerationbroadbandwilllikelybe10Mbit/sandabove.

    Whatis Broadband?

    The online Webster's dictionary defines

broadband as "A class of communication

channel capable of supporting a wide range of

frequencies, typically from audio up to videofrequencies. A broadband channel can carry

multiple signals by dividing the total capacity into

    multiple, independent bandwidth channels,

where each channel operates only on a specificrange of frequencies."

    Whatis Broadband?

The firstpartofanswering the question 'howdoesbroadbandwork'isto thinkaboutthephrasea "class of communicationchannel."We can gatherfromthisthatitisdifferentfromthenormal class of communication channelthatwe use- ourregularphone lines.Phone lines, also calledbasebandlines,normallycarry29.6kbps ofanalog data when usedforvoicecommunications. Butwith theadventoftheinternet, peoplebeganto demandfasterdatatransmission. A regular, baseband

phone line can carryupto 56kbps ofdata with the help ofa

    high-speedmodem,butwithoutadditionaltechnology,thatisitsmaximum capacity.

    Whatis Broadband?

So howdoesbroadbandwork? Ifyou thinkofabasebandlineas having one "channel"to sendinformation, you canthinkofabroadbandlineas

having multiple channelsthatyou useatthesametime. Notonlythat, butabroadbandconnectioniscapable of carrying a widerrangeandtype offrequencies, meaning differenttypes ofdata. Andwhatitcan carry, itcarries faster.Whenyou drive ontheinterstate, whathappens whentherearen'tenoughlanes forthenumberof cars ontheroad? Everyoneisforcedto go slower.

    10/33

    Broadband Evolution10

    Whatis Broadband?

The samehappens with the internet. Think of yourconnection to the internet as a tunnel that links yourcomputer to the internet. A regular phone line canallow only a small amount of data to pass through at

a time. In comparison, a broadband is a wider (orbroader) tunnel, allowing a greater amount ofinformation to pass through your connection at onetime. The breadth of this tunnel is called"bandwidth." The more bandwidth you have, the

faster you can move data. With broadband service, you can also download files that require a great dealof different types of frequencies as well, such asaudio and video files.

    11/33

    Broadband Evolution11

    Whatis Broadband?

This is a partial answer to thequestion 'how doesbroadband work,' but the otherhas to do with theway that broadband services can compress andtransmit that data that you're sending. Go back to

the cars on the interstate analogy. What if suddenlyall of the cars could be miniaturized? What wouldthat do to the traffic jam? Or if they could use all ofthe space available in the tunnel - above yourhead, between cars, etc. Broadband technology not only

widens the channels you have, but it uses themmoreefficiently. Meaning you can get more out ofthe bandwidth that you have. Broadband makes yourinternet experience faster and moreefficient overall.
