The Ritual of Our Unit
our daily rituals
At Ananda, every day is a busy one for us, with
Sdrting from the break of dawn and sunrise. As members of our unit, enter
tne college premises they worship the Ananda Viharaya,
drOot to the unit, calling out a tradition unique to all Anandians. As we greet
our teachers with a respecttul
before setting
"good morning", even before our classrooms
Our destiny is the "Broadcasting Unit."
,myself follow these guidelines adopted by Anandian announcers, and
p towards our heaven by seven a. m, in order not to miss the deadline
TOr admittance. In fact, the unit is like an office for us, giving us a toucn
or professio nalism, and grooming us for office coordination; and sometime like
nome where we enjoy ourselves, crack jokes and learn to work as a team.
I Is quite the bleuding of all of these elements that makes our unit a truly hospitable
working environment. The daily rituals of the unit go into tull action as our staff
advisor. Mrs. D. R. Wijeratne walks into the room silencing every one, and taking
them off their feet. Her help is always valuable to us and she herself is like mother.
But occationally she loses her temper, and has a very effective way of showing us
Our faults.
The day starts off, as our junior members go for the "news box'" and stack
Scraps of ceitified aunouncements on our table. The translators then go into full
effect and begin translating the extensive news items inio English. Naturally, there
are very rare cases when we tend to be perplexed, and sometimes in a frantic quest
for appropriate words
order to get our announcements going.
But tinally, we work out some sort of substritute word in
Our news editing team, then goes to work and starts editing the news items
"as much as possible" In fact, they posses an inciedible tatent to edit pages of
news into just less that few lincs. Apparently, the worst job in our unit is being
an editor, since the editor is always the one blamed for announcement errors. At
the end of editing. the script writers start transcribing the edited news into our
permenant news-books. The news-reader, then runs thiough the script a few timess
and finally gets ready to give a performance.
Meanwhile our "thought - readers" prepare themselves with appropriate
thoughts and recite these thoughts to our English staff advisor, Mr. M. A. Sumana-
pala and receive approval. faced and assists the English team to carry out their rituals e ffectively.
Mr. Sumanapala on the other hand is always happy
As the clock strikes 7.20, it spells what we prefer to call as Down time!"
for our juniors. To avoid them making it a habit to stay behind, without going for the
assembly, the 7 20 Down time is their final deadline to leave the unit. Usually it is
I, Hasitha, and our 22nd Anniversary project chairman Makalanda, who does this job
by announcing the deadline and sending away our juniors. m not surprised that
e three of us so much. Our juniors are quite obedient and have learnt to
when they see us coming (We seniors, of course share special
privelleges!
6 Dell rings and the assembly begins the rituals of our unit come to an
d, and performance time begins. in our studlo. Sometimes after the news Is over
dnnouncers get blamed for not reading the news properly. NervousneSS tends to
gve rise to mistakes in reading and even being in good mood is sometimes bad for
dnnouncing; especially when you are reading an obituary notice, Being in a bad mood
S 81so bad when you are announcing a victory. It is usually this "mood confusion"
that makes us fall in trouble so olten.
LoOking back at the short time we spent in the unit, it is sometimes impressive
tO imagine the great deal of work that we have actually done for the school that
morning. Needless to say the rituals of our unlt every day is a result of our team
Work, co-ordination; and the support given to us by our teachers. For everyday is
another ritual for our broad casting unit.

From The President of the Broadeasting Unit
nembers of the Broadcasting Unit of Ananda College, perform a vital role in
ge. It is worth considerina for a moment what is the meaning of so important a ole
ur unit that facilitates the transmission of ideas, facts, opinions, and teelngs o
ge so cieties, clubs and managsment, For it is our unit which facilitates the muTua
nange of informatlon, which is essential for the smooth motion of the fly-wheel of
College administration.
ne duty of a member of the Broadcasting Unit is that which requires hard-work,
intelligence, tact, knowledge and wisdom. The duty comes with responsibility, and trust, and though it has its toil and tears, it also has its fair share of glamour and recongnition However the chief characteristics of a member of the unit is his humbleness. and his
ability to make every opportunity to educate himself.
By being a member of another club in college, might eventually succeed in molding a character Ilike that of a pearl, which shines best in daylight, but being a member of the Broadecasting Unit will embody a character like that of a diamond, which shines best
in varying light.
With the coming of the age of information technology and cyberspace, I foresee an
interesting and dynamic change in the fiold of information dissemination. And I hope that our college unit will adopt to that change, and continue to produce many revolutionary Broadcasters and Communicators like it has done so far.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish our beloved former co teacher in charge Mrs. Manel Fernando a pleasant retirement, and extend a warm welcome to our new co-master in charge Mr. M. A. Sumanapala Also I extend our gratitude and appreciation to our dear Mrs Ranjani Wijeratne who has been with us through thick and thin as one of our co-teachers- in charge throughout. I would also like to recognise the tireless and selfless efforts of Project Chairman Shaymajanaka Makalanda (Marky) and his committee.
Finally , wish all of you here an educative, and enjoyable day.
