Taishoff Family Foundation

The Taishoff Family Foundation was established by the late Lawrence B. Taishoff and his son Rob in honor of their legendary father and grandfather Sol Taishoff, the founder and editor-in-chief of Broadcasting magazine. As journalists and publishers, Sol and Larry Taishoff played a seminal role in the development of the radio and television industry in America. As champions of a free and unfettered broadcasting profession, Broadcasting magazine was created as the instrument and manifestation of their devotion to resemble a “sentinel on the Potomac” to warn against gov-ernment intrusion into the creative processes and activities of radio and television broadcasters.

The Taishoffs devoted their entire lives to extending the values and protections of the First Amendment to “The Fifth Estate” which was the designation bestowed upon the broadcasting fraternity by Sol Taishoff so many years ago.

The vision and foresight of both Taishoffs often caused them to be allied on many of the great issues of the day with the work and example of one of our own founding chairman Ward L. Quaal. In 2009, the Taishoff family was honored with a Ward L. Quaal Pioneer Award.

In addition to their commitment to journalistic causes and a free press, the Taishoff Family Foundation is also active in improving the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The Foundation has developed resources to help educate so-ciety about the special skills and talents of people with Down syndrome, autism and traumatic brain injury, to name a few. Toward this goal, the Taishoff Family Foundation has established the Lawrence B. Taishoff Center for Inclusive Higher Education at Syracuse University.

The Taishoffs also provided critical initial funding for the Library of American Broadcasting, now located at the University of Maryland. Sol Taishoff himself was one of the founders of the Broadcast Pioneers organization which, as you know, has now become the national charitable endeavor known as the Broadcasters Foundation of America which you and so many of our colleagues support.

Today, the Taishoff Family Foundation is administered by the third generation of family members who support, among their many worthwhile endeavors, the National Press Foundation which annually presents the Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Electronic Journalism.

Retired Captain Robert Taishoff USN, is the chairman of the Taishoff Family Foundation.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America extends its deep grat-itude to the Taishoff family for carrying on the legacy of their illustrious forebears by underwriting On The Air magazine, which is distributed widely throughout the broadcast industry.

The mission of the Broadcasters Foundation of America is to improve the quality of life and maintain the personal dignity of men and women in the radio and television broadcast profession who find themselves in acute need. The foundation reaches out across the country to identify and provide an anonymous safety net in cases of critical illness, advanced age, death of a spouse, accident and other serious misfortune. Chairman’s Message

President’s Message

We’re proud to welcome three new board members to our team. Kim Guthrie, President of Cox Media Group, and DuJuan McCoy, Owner/President/CEO of Bayou City Broadcasting, have joined our Board of Directors, and Julie Talbott, President of Premiere Networks, has joined our ranks as a Vice President and Officer. I look forward to working with these esteemed broadcasters and our entire Board of Directors on our upcoming fundraising and outreach campaigns.

We are now in the middle of relaunching our outreach campaign. I am certain there are broadcasters in every state that need our support, but they don’t know we are here or are too ashamed of their circumstances to ask for help. A longtime broadcaster who recently applied for a grant wrote: “I hesitated for five months to submit this application due to my feeling of unworthiness. My frugal existence is a complete 180 degree turn in my life – no car, no cable, limited mobility. Financial assistance at this time would improve the quality of my health… and allow me to take my grandkids to a movie or to the water park.”

Please help spread the word about our mission. Let's make sure that every broadcaster in need knows we’re here to help.

Thanks in advance for your continued support,

Jim Thompson President

This year’s Las Vegas events were a huge success. The Philip J. Lombardo Charity Golf Tournament found a new home at the Bali Hai Golf Club and our Leadership Breakfast was powerful and inspiring. I’d like to again congratulate all eight of this year’s award honorees. Each honoree shows a passion for radio and television broadcasting and is an example of the type of leadership this industry deserves. We thank each of you for your support.

And support for our broadcasting colleagues in need is the key initiative of the Foundation. We continue to look for innovative ways to expand our outreach to ensure that all

broadcasters know about our mission. Listen for our new Radio PSA campaign, which will start airing this summer on stations across the country. In the past few months, we’ve received more requests for help than ever before and we’re pushing to increase our giving even more in the months to come. But we need your help. To learn more about our organization, visit our website, broadcastersfoundation.org. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter at @BroadcastersFDN. Share our Message. Join our Mission.

Thank you,

Chairman Dan Mason (right) accepted the donation at the Talkers Conference in NYC, reminding everyone that too many broadcasters in need don’t know the Foundation exists and asking them to spread the word about the Foundation’s mission of “granting hope.”

Jimmy Moore was a photo journalist with WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, SC. One morning, on his way into work, Jimmy was in a catastrophic car accident. His injuries were so severe, he had to be life-flighted to the nearest hospital. His wife, Jaimie, was also on her way to work and unknowingly stuck in the traffic from her husband’s accident. When Jaimie arrived at the hospital, she was told that her husband would never be able to walk again and might have trouble breathing on his own. It was merely months after their wedding and now the Moores were faced with the unimaginable. The couple moved to Atlanta, so Jimmy could receive specialized treatment from Shepherd Spinal Center. His care would require new medical equipment and dedicated nursing care. Their News Director back at WSPA-TV told the Moores about the Broadcasters Foundation of America. They began to receive a monthly financial grant, which helped them move into a home large enough for Jimmy’s new medical equipment and enabled them to hire the nursing care he needs. Now Jimmy and Jaimie are taking care of a new member of the Moore Family, their daughter, Spencer Rosalyn Moore.

Jimmy’s story is just one of many. Please tell your colleagues about the Broadcasters Foundation of America, because no broadcaster’s cry for help should ever go unanswered.
