    TLA ANNUAL MEETINGThe annual business meet ing of the The-atre Library Association was held on Fri-day afternoon, October 29, 1982, in theShubert Archive, Lyceum Theatre, NewYork City. President Louis A. Rachow wel-comed the assembled members and intro-duced the board members and ex-officiorepresentatives.Richard M. Buck presented the Secre-tary-Treasurer's report for 1981-82, report-

    ing that the total paid membership of 441shows a decrease in personal membersand a slight increase in institutional mem-bers. A comparison of income and ex-penses shows a working balance of$1,487.77, over 51,000 more than lastyear's balance. This is the second time inrecent years that income has exceeded ex-penses. Copies of the Secretary-Treasur-er's report may be obtained f rom the TLAoffice at Lincoln Center.President Rachow thanked Don Wil-meth on behalf of the Theatre LibraryAssociation for his tireless efforts inorganizing the ASTR/TLA Conference inProvidence, R.I., November 19-21, 1982.Dr. Mary C. Henderson offered the facil-ities of The Theatre Museum in the Min-skoff Arcade for the TLNFreedley BookAwards ceremonies in the spring.Ginnine Cocuzza announced the publi-cation of PAR7: Lazzi: The Comic Routinesof the Commedia del'arte by Me l Gordon.She thanked Mary Henderson for makingthe SIBMAS conference proceedingsavailab le for PAR8 and for having severalof the papers translated into English fromtheir original languages. As editor ofBroadside, she asked the members to con-tribu te their news to TLA's quarterly news-letter, be it press releases, brochures ofinterest, book reviews and other informa-tion. A handsome membership brochure isnow available and an up-to-date member-ship list has been printed.Laraine'Correll summarized the threeday Conference on Preservation Mana gement in Performing Arts Collections,Washington, D.C., April 28-May 1, 1982.Forty speakers from academics institu-tions, public libraries and performing artsorganizations and agencies shared con-cerns and exchanged knowledge with pro-fessional conservators in the field.     TLA's part icipation in conferences overthe past year was reported brief ly. For theAmerican Library Association meeting inPhiladelphia, Geraldine DucLow organ-ized a morn ing session of speakers on t h eatre, film and music resources in Philadel-phia (University of Pennsylvania, LubinFilm Archives, and Fleischer Music Collec-tion) and an afternoon tour of the Rosen-bach Museum and Library and the ForrestTheatre, concluding with a reception inthe theatre lounge. Richard Buck reportedthat the TLA exhibit table was quite busythroughout the American Theatre Associa-tion conference in New York City. MaryHenderson, who had organized the 15thInternational Congress of SIBMAS, r eported that representatives of 19 foreigncountries and nine of the United Stateshad come to New York for lectures anddiscussions. She announced that TLA hasbeen appointed the SIBMAS representa-tive for the United States.The American Library Association willmeet in Los Angeles in 1983. Ann Schlos-ser of the American Film Inst itute wi llarrange for a ful l day of visits to numerousperforming arts centers for TLA.

    Bookbinding and the Conservation ofBooks: A Dictionary of Descriptive Termi-nology has recently been issued under theauspices of the Library of Congress' Na-tional Preservation Program.Unique among publications on the sub-ject, the book approaches conservation byexamining the meaning and usage ofmany terms, expressions, and names per-tinent to the field. Bookbinding has under-gone a rebirth in the last several years.     Swaim comes to PBS from the NationalCenter for a Barrier Free Environment,where she was involved in general libraryactivities and analysis of automation sys-tems since 1980. Before that, she was withthe Alexander Graham Bell Association,where she performed both library and ar-chives functions and undertook a conser-vation program for its rare book collec-tion.Swaim holds a B.A. in Comparative His-tory (1974) and a Master's degree inLibrary Science (1977) from Catholic Uni-versity in Washington, D.C.

    The term "scenic artist" connotes a dif -ferent era in theatrical history than stagedesigner, a credit often seen in today'splaybills. Behind the Scenes: The TheatreArt of Karle0. Amend, a new exhibition inthe Vincent Astory Gallery of The NewYork Public Library at Linco ln Center, indi-cates how far the profession has evolvedwhile showing many colorful examples ofearlier techniques.If a stage designer now were commis-sioned to create King Tut's Tomb, TomThumb's Golf Course, Atlantic City, WallStreet, a battle ship, a train station and ahospital ward for a single show, he mightreasonably assume the producers hadmore money than sense. But Karle Amendhad to do just that during the 1920s and1930s when most revues required as manyas 20 different sets. Fortunately, paintedbackdrops rather than total environmentswere sufficient to evoke even the mostexotic locale.Amend's sketches for many stage p r eductions during this active and variedperiod are exhibited. From 1925 to 1932,he designed sets for seven editions of theEarl Carroll Vanities, an enormously suc-cessful revue. Renderings for scenes titled"Blossoms and Sugar Cane," "Roof Party"and "Factory Yard" from Shuffle Along of7933, which starred Noble Sissle and EubieBlake, reflect the different moods Amendwas required to convey in his designs forone musical production.The exhibition also features a selectionof stencils and pounces in a mixture ofstyles, includ ing Art Deco. Amend usedthese technical devices to decorate theelaborate lobbies and auditoriums in thePoli theatre chain. The floor plans andscene plots on display reveal a man wellversed in architectural and constructionproblems.An early member of United Scenic Art-ists ("Local 829" is stamped on nearly allof his drawings), Amend executed most ofhis work-which included painting as wellas fla t construct ion-a t his own sceneshop in North Bergen, New Jersey. AmendScenic Studios i s pictured in a sketch andhis donkey logo stamp is shown along witha piece of aluminum hardware he in-vented to secure flats used in travelingproductions.

    For his personal correspondenceemerges a harrowing portrait of the De-pression. He received as many dunningletters as he sent, and he wrote to manygovernment off ici als - Franklin Rooseveltand members of the War Departmentamong them-offering his studio for anERA project. In return for a pencil andwatercolor sketch of the Paradise CabaretRestaurant at Broadway and 49th Street,the owners game him a letter of credit inthe amount of $130 "good everyday in-cluding Saturday, tax and tip to be paid incash."

    Columbia University's Avery Architec-tural 81 Fine Arts Library was part of anexciting rescue of architectural materialsfrom the recently demolished Helen HayesTheatre in New York City. As demoli tion ofthe Landmark building began, 10 boxes ofdrawings and blueprints from a realty of-fice in the upper floors of the theatre werediscovered by Meadows/Woll, the archi-tectural f irm hired to remove certain dec erative elements from the build ing.Diane Kaese, a student in Columbia'spreservation program and an employee ofMeadows/Woll, called Herbert M~tchell,Bibliographer at the Avery Library. Mem-bers of the Avery staff visited the demoli-tion site, made a quick assessment of thematerial, discovered that records of sev-eral New York City structures were in-cluded and moved the material to theAvery Library where a final decision aboutits care can be made.(COPAR, Sept. 1982)

    Amend, born in Columbus, Ohio in1889, was a genuine all-round man of thetheatre. His early days as a vaudevi lleperformer are documented in reviewsand advertisements for his comedy andwooden shoe dancing act.
