When I first started writing this letter in early 2020, I was so excited to share our successes from 2019, and was looking forward to another year with optimism and enthusiasm. But I would be remiss not to acknowledge the position we all find ourselves in as we deal with the world-wide crisis of COVID-19. We are living through a time unlike anything we have experienced before. Arts organizations are being affected especially hard. Broadway Rose is unique in many ways; we’re tenacious and nimble. Together we will get through this crisis, and we look forward to again producing

amazing artistic musical theatre as soon as it is safe to do so. We are grateful for all of you who continue to make that possible.

Please enjoy this report as we reflect on a wonderful 2019 season, aptly themed “Wishes Come True.”

Our 2019 season was filled with new challenges and wonderful opportunities. For the first time in 28 years, we produced all of our shows at The New Stage while the Deb Fennell Auditorium (our summer home since 1992) was under construction, and it was fantastic. Because of you we ended the year in a strong financial position while working to achieve our mission of creating unparalleled musical theatre experiences that invigorate audiences and enrich our communities.

We produced six incredible mainstage musicals – Nunsense, A Grand Night for Singing, Into the Woods, Footloose, Once and It Happened One Christmas – with a record number of sold-out performances. Our summer sensations, Into the Woods and Footloose, stretched our production capabilities, filled The New Stage with artists, and were artistically brilliant.

We also launched a $3.3 million building expansion campaign to expand The New Stage so that individuals can more fully access and participate in musical theatre, while we continue to present productions of exceptional artistic quality. The expansion will include a new studio space, a costume shop and enlarged scenic shop, and additional administrative offices. With your help, we have nearly $2.9 million committed to the project and continue to work towards the goal.

Broadway Rose Theatre Company continues to receive operating funding from a variety of sources. In 2019, our ticket sales and educational programs accounted for 61% of our income at nearly $1.6 million, while donors and events accounted for 39% at just over $1 million.

With your support, we began 2020 in a very strong financial position. We strive to always produce shows with the highest artistic quality, with incredible artists and designers, while we keep our ticket prices affordable and accessible to all. We are proud of our ability to do both extremely well.

On behalf of the staff and the Board of Directors, I want to thank you for making our wishes come true during the 28th season, and for continuing to support us at every show and event. I am honored to work with you as we move forward together in these uncertain times.

Oregon’s premier musical theatre company. Under the artistic direction of Sharon Maroney, Broadway Rose has been producing professional musical theatre in the Portland area since 1992 and has earned national recognition for its commitment to artistic excellence and new work development. Working to enrich the region’s cultural life and increase opportunities for Oregonians to participate in the arts, the company presents a variety of mainstage productions throughout the year as well as summer children’s musicals, educational camps for children and teens, and a technical internship program for developing theatre professionals. Broadway Rose is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to keeping live theatre affordable and making its productions accessible to all members of the community.

the school cafeteria into a theatre-in-the-round for five performances of the musical Tuck Everlasting.

FOOTLOOSE BREAKS RECORD FOR LARGEST NEW STAGE CAST 28 actors filled the New Stage with explosive energy and attracted sold-out audiences. It was the highest attended production of 2019.

PATRONS ENJOY A NEW PERSPECTIVE AT ONCE Onstage seating incorporated into the set allowed for a record-setting 279 person-audience at each performance at the New Stage. Pre-show live music performances and interaction with the cast further elevated the experience. The entire production sold-out before opening night.

ORIGINAL MUSICAL PREMIERES It Happened One Christmas, written by Rick Lewis and Broadway Rose Managing Director Dan Murphy, closed the season with full houses and holiday cheer.

IN A RECORD YEAR OF PERFORMANCES, A MAJORITY SOLD OUT Due in part to shifting its summer programming to longer runs at the smaller New Stage while its summer venue, Tigard High School, was under construction, Broadway Rose sold tickets to more performances than ever before – 176 including children’s musicals and the teen workshop. 134 dates were sold-out, totaling approximately 77% of all performances. Nunsense, Footloose, and Once sold-out their entire runs.

2019 Highlights

SCHOOL DISTRICT RENEWS 30-YEAR LEASE OF THE NEW STAGE The Tigard-Tualatin School District enthusiastically agreed to renew Broadway Rose’s lease of the New Stage property for 30 more years, demonstrating faith in the company and securing our home through 2049.

BROADWAY ROSE LAUNCHES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN With a $1 million lead gift designated by Broadway Roses’s board of directors, the company publicly announced plans to expand the New Stage facility with the addition of a multi-use studio space, on-site costume shop and enlarged scenic shop, and additional administrative offices. Groundbreaking is planned for 2020.

INTO THE WOODS DEBUTS NEW SCENIC TECHNOLOGY Broadway Rose production staff designed and installed a new roll-drop system at the New Stage to allow for scenic elements to be lowered and raised on rollers above the stage, compensating for the lack of fly space and expanding future artistic capacity.
