welcome to ATC Ireland

Since ATC was founded over 40 years ago, we have seen Ireland become one of the most prominent locations in the world for learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). During that time, thousands of students have travelled to ATC from across the world to improve their knowledge of English the natural way - in the company of charming and talkative Irish people.

We offer a wide range of courses for students of different ages and levels of English, all of

which are approved by the Department of Education and Skills. Our courses, which are conducted by fully qualified teachers, have an international reputation for academic excellence. Students attending our courses can choose to live with an Irish family or in residential accommodation. We at ATC are committed to providing quality English language programmes to suit your needs. We look forward to welcoming you, and we assure you of a professional, caring service throughout your stay.

about ireland

IrElAndIreland is a beautiful island with a population of just 4.5 million people and it offers a unique and unforgettable language learning experience for students of all ages.

The Irish people are very friendly and full of conversation, visitors are warmly welcomed and find it very easy to relax and talk to Irish people. Ireland’s deeply rooted historical and cultural tradition means you always have something fun and exciting to do during your stay.

From Dublin in the east to the rugged Atlantic coastline in the west, Ireland has something to offer everybody. Irish theatre is among the best in the world, and many of the biggest names in Hollywood, from Orson Welles to Pierce Brosnan and Colin Farrell, began their acting careers on the Irish stage. Traditional music and dance are widely enjoyed, with Ireland having produced such international names as U2 and the phenomenally successful show, Riverdance.

Come to Ireland and walk in the footsteps of many literary giants including Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, WB Yeats and Seamus Heaney, all of whom have influenced Ireland’s language and culture.

dublInIreland’s capital city, Dublin, is located on the east coast of Ireland and is a vibrant, safe and inspirational city, world renowned for its warmth and hospitality. Dublin has a population of approximately 1.5 million people and is an animated and welcoming city. Dublin has produced, or been home to, some of the greatest literary names in history. Dublin’s most famous literary son is James Joyce and Dublin is the setting for two of his greatest works: Ulysses and The Dubliners. Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, W.B. Yeats, Jonathan Swift and

Bram Stoker are just some of the famous writers who were born or lived in Dublin. This modern city also has many theatres, cinemas and concert venues to entertain the visitor. Shops and museums, art galleries and exhibitions are plentiful in this young and exciting capital city.

brAyBray, now regarded as a suburb of Dublin, is located south of Dublin at the gateway to Wicklow, ‘The Garden of Ireland’. Bray offers students the best of both worlds. You can enjoy all the splendour of Wicklow and yet you are only a 35-minute train (DART) journey away from Dublin city centre. Bray offers a wide range of shops and theatre venues, noted restaurants and pubs, with live music and entertainment happening regularly throughout the year.

The town of Bray is named after the imposing rock hill which gives the town its character. A walk up the hill offers a unique view over Dublin Bay. Bray’s natural beauty has made it an attractive holiday destination since the 19th century. Early holiday-makers from Britain and Dublin built splendid Victorian houses as summer homes like those typically seen on the seafront.

ATC is located in four of these Victorian buildings, including the beautifully restored Dunluice House. Carefully and completely refurbished and upgraded, Dunluice House combines Victorian elegance with modern comforts. The classrooms are bright, spacious and warm, with magnificent views across the Irish Sea. Bray offers something for everyone, from its famous walks (with the popular Bray Promenade and Bray Head located beside the school) to horse riding, golf, sailing and angling.

CourSE CurrICulumOur curriculum for both General and Intensive Courses is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and focuses very much on student-centred learning. Our teachers use methodologies such as CLT (Communicative Language Teaching), TBL (Task-Based Learning), and CLL (Cooperative Language Learning) which aim to develop our students’ communicative skills and deepen their understanding of the English language. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages describes six levels of language ability, from A1 up to C2. Students are accepted to ATC at all levels, from Beginner (level A0) and Elementary (level A1) up to Advanced (level C1) TESTInGOn the first day of school, students are given a placement test which includes a written and oral needs analysis. They are then placed in a class appropriate to their ability and needs.

ClASS PlACEmEnTEach lesson is one full hour (60 minutes). Classes are available at all levels year round. ATC classes hold a maximum of 15 students, but you can expect an average of 8 to 12 students in class at most times of the year. There are usually between 12 and 16 nationalities in the school at any one time, so you can expect a truly international mix. Class times are divided so that students receive lessons from more than one teacher, two per morning, allowing them the benefit of more than one voice and teaching style and having a team of teachers liaise on their learning paths. A variety of classroom layouts suits different learning styles. ProGrESSProgress tests are done in class on a regular basis and in negotiation with teachers and the Director of Studies. ATC aims to see students improving at a rate of one level per 80-120 hours, although learners may differ in this; it may take one student 4 weeks, another 8 weeks to improve. We use the CEF to help teachers and students to navigate their progress, and we can recommend extra work to be done in the self-access study centre to promote it. CErTIFICATIonAll students receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the course, which includes a short didactic report signed by two teachers. All ATC reports include the number of hours studied, which may be used for educational credits on return to education establishments at home.

GEnErAl EnGlIShThe General English course syllabus is 20 hours per week and is designed to improve the students’ understanding of the English language system and performance in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students may begin each Monday on a continuous enrolment system. All levels from elementary to advanced are catered for throughout the year. By the end of the course students will see an overall improvement in their standard of English and improved confidence in their language ability.

InTEnSIvE EnGlIShThe Intensive course syllabus is based on the need for practice in fluency and accuracy in spoken English. The Intensive course is 26 hours per week, and includes the General English programme (20 hours) and a further 6 hours per week taken over two afternoons. The focus of the afternoon classes is on discourse structures and on conversation. Students may request specific areas they wish to focus on.

buSInESS SEmInArSThese seminars are on offer to all ATC students who have an intermediate (B1) level or above, all year

round, free of charge. From September to June these classes take place once per week for 90 minutes per session. The classes are in the form of workshops given by experienced teachers, with a fine balance between theory and practice. The syllabus covers business correspondence, note-taking, case histories, negotiating, meetings and preparing for interviews. They are very popular and are a welcome addition to all those taking General and Intensive courses. Students can register for the seminars on arrival.

ExAm CourSESStudents can study and prepare for a range of internationally recognised English language exams: including IELTS, Cambridge, TOEIC, TOEFL, TIE, Trinity ESOL and others. These exams are available year round except for Trinity ESOL, which is only available in the summer. Trinity and TIE exams are available onsite for groups of candidates. ATC is an ETS examination centre and provides onsite examination of TOEIC. Exam courses are set up for groups of 6 or more. If fewer than 6 students enrol for a specific exam, the course may be cancelled and student coached individually in our supervised self-access centre.

Each week consists of over 25 hours in the classroom + 5 hours of cultural excursions.

Classroom time is divided between personal language development, and teaching development. Our aim is to provide teachers with the opportunity to develop their English language skills; to expand their knowledge of current approaches and methods in language training; and to explore different practical
