Emerging economies are embarking on new journeys, where growth means new transport, routes, airports, and the technology to make it all work. Facing these challenges today has an advantage: benefitting from the experience of those – such as Novabase – who have tackled similar challenges elsewhere.

Developed economies show an inverse trend. Add a difficult economy to an urgent need for more sustainable cities and the result is public transport that requires reinventing. Today, economic constraints are pushing increasing numbers towards collective transport. What if we could attract these people instead, with a more flexible, fluid and comfortable passenger experience?

Bridging these two worlds, air traffic is enjoying an upward trend. More planes are being built, but the space they share is limited: so what is the best way to optimise airports, control systems, even air space itself? More importantly, here too there is scope for rethinking the passenger experience. And here again, technology is not the starting point: we must first understand what people want, how they travel, how they would like to travel.

Finally, Space: no longer a distant domain. Satellites are everywhere: from telecommunications to on board aircraft, or even the mere gesture of checking the time. Applications are constantly emerging, and some, such as providing a more precise location, open an entire field of opportunities.

Capital of the largest of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has 230 000 inhabitants, and annually receives millions of holidaymakers in search of relaxation.

Working with the consortium that built the city’s light rail system, Novabase was to ensure that ticketing for the new transport system was implemented with the same tranquillity.

That meant, on the one hand, building an end-to-end ticketing solution, ensuring seamless integration between the ticket machines, validators, on-board computers, portable ticket

City Pulse Taking the fast lane

Concentrating millions of people into cities makes them energy-efficient habitats. But how do we make sure all these people can move quickly?

One answer is transport with exclusive lanes aimed at high frequency and volume of passengers. While traditional solutions such as underground metro have huge lead times and are expensive, alternatives like light metro in exclusive lanes, either on rail or on tires, are much simpler to implement.

The key factors here are speed, simplicity and automation. For maximum fluidity vehicles travel along exclusive lanes with the driver totally concentrated on driving. In road solutions, automatic guidance may allow for narrow lanes, saving urban space. Crossings are managed so as to provide non-stop routes to the metro vehicles. Extensive information and entertainment provided to passengers along the journey greatly improve their perceived experience.

Stations welcome passengers providing security, comfort and information. Closed stations, even in a small scale, may maximize all these factors. Tickets are purchased and validated before boarding, mainly through self-service easy-to-use and remotely assisted devices. Case in point: Carris ticketing system

Developing a whole new ticketing system for Carris was quite a challenge.

With over 800 vehicles, ranging from buses, funiculars and trams (including the picturesque ones which are a Lisbon icon), and carrying nearly 700 000 passengers a day, Carris has been operating for more than a century. Today it’s Portugal’s largest public transport operator.

The project’s ambition was to use ticketing to optimise all the company’s supporting systems. Its starting point: a complicated, paper-based process where the 2000 drivers collected money from passengers. Huge manual work requiring many layers of control.

250 points of sales, 1700 validators, 800 on-board vending terminals, 9 cash collection machines, 70 inspector terminals and a central management system later, what a difference.

Now ticket sales are also available in third-party networks, like the post offices and the ATM machines. Financial, administrative and operational systems are integrated: Carris knows at any moment where a vehicle is and how many passengers it carries. Integration with Lisbon’s intermodal clearing system is also assured.

Not only is the process safe and easy to control, it became a valuable source of management information. And, as the icing on the cake, the system conquered its most intensive users: ticket agents, who love their functional, easy-to-use new way of working.

This is particularly challenging for occasional users, who are faced with a fairly complex and unfamiliar system every time they need it. But even for frequent travelers, planning journeys and buying tickets could become simpler and much more comfortable.

Case in point: Veolia mobile ticketing

It was a first in Europe. Located in Côte d’Azur, one of the world’s most sophisticated destinations, the city of Nice partnered with Veolia, the world’s largest private passenger transport operator, to confirm the advantages of putting mobile phones at the service of user-friendly urban mobility.

The result is a service based on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology that transforms a mobile phone into a kind of urban mobility Swiss army knife. It can be used to buy and top up tickets and even as a ticket itself, acting as a contactless travel card. It also allows you to transfer tickets to a card or another mobile phone and visualize all kinds of useful information, from the times of the next bus to nearby shops and museums.

As any ambitious initiative, the project brought significant challenges, requiring the coordination of many technological systems and entities.

Novabase implemented the whole back-office system: product management, remote ticket loading and electronic payment.

The fact that the project was implemented in France, one of the most advanced market for ticketing, made the challenge even greater. And, of course, the sense of mission accomplished as well.

VIVA is the brand name of the intermodal cards and services managed by OTLIS, a consortium of Lisbon public transport operators. Through the VIVA portal, buying cards and loading tickets on them is now much easier: it can be done at home, at any time.

make it so user-friendly it’s not worth taking the car. And this

begins with purchasing the ticket.

For example, which is more attractive? Queuing at counters

or machines in specific locations with restricted times – or

purchasing tickets from home at your convenience, with all the

information and time you need to choose the ticket that is right

for you?

Because the answer is obvious, Online & Go was born: a

solution for online ticket sales, with advantages for everyone.

For passengers, it brings convenience, plenty of information

With air traffic expected to double in 2020 compared to 2009, Europe has one of the world’s most crowded air spaces.

Being managed by a patchwork of 27 national air traffic systems traditionally caused European routes to be on average 30 miles longer than necessary. And flight delays that not only affect passengers, but cost airlines billions a year.

This is finally changing. By integrating European air space management, the Single European Sky initiative will increase air space and airport capacity, boosting the industry’s efficiency and safety. It will also reduce fuel consumption, waiting times, CO2 emissions and noise rates.

The initiative’s technological arm is SESAR – Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research: a 2.1-billion-euro project aimed at bringing about the technological revolution needed to synchronize traffic management across Europe.

Novabase has joined this vital European effort. It has already helped airlines, aircraft manufacturers, traffic control companies and airports adapt their systems to SESAR requirements in fields such as route optimization, integration of unmanned aircraft in non-segregated space, and emission controls.
