The Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Guwahati houses an excellent milieu of able faculty and staff members, state-of-the-art laboratories and a huge number of meritorious students pursuing B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D programs. Our B.Tech and M.Tech students do get trained in real life work environment through summer internships in various industries and universities, both in India and abroad. The alumni of this department have proven their competence by excelling in some of the most competitive environments around the globe, be it in the industry or in academia. Continuing with the legacy, the current B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D batches have many innovative and enterprising minds. As the Head of Department, I proudly present the current final year batch to all potential recruiters. Those who have hired our students in the past are already familiar with the high standards our alumni have set. For new recruiters, we are confident that the excellence of the current batch will catalyze the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship with IIT Guwahati.

As placement officer, it gives me an immense pleasure in introducing Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. Our 6th B.Tech and 6th M.Tech batch are ready for on campus place-ment. I am confident that the students of our department will live-up to your expectations as they have been doing so far. This brochure will give you a glimpse of the breadth of talent within the batch of 2011 and provide you with concise information about the various programs.

I heartily welcome both the recruiters and our graduating students to come to a common platform and get the best out of each other.

Student Activities

The Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Guwahati started in the year 2002, and strives for excellence in research, high quality education and out-standing professional services. The department is a major academic host offering B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D in Chemical Engineering. Our academic pro-gramme is meticulously designed to equip students with fundamental understanding on the subjects of Chemical Engineering. We keep good balance between theoretical and laboratory based practical courses. Apart from this, the department is also engaged in various R&D and consultancy projects in various organizations.

About the Department

The Department is endowed with young, vibrant and dynamic faculty well qualified to impart quality education and are also involved in prominent R&D projects sponsored by the likes of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Defense Research Lab (DRL), Defense Research and Development Lab (DRDL), Rubotherm Germany Centre for Research Excellence, and also run consultancy projects for well known companies like IOCL, OIL, NTPC, BRPL and Amrit Bio-energy and Industries Limited. The Department is also visited by faculty from renowned universities all over India as well as abroad.

The techno-management festival, Techniche and the cultural festival, Alcheringa are organized and managed completely by the students of IITG, providng them multiple platforms for their all round development, and also improve their soft-skills, which are imperative for one to excel in one’s workspace. These festivals are considered at the forefront in their respective fields in the North-East of India and has been the source of inspiration for similar activi-ties in numerous colleges in the region. In addition to honing their organizational skills, the students also perform certain administrative duties mainly pertaining to the welfare of the 2500 students residing in campus. The students from the department have been a successful part of the Student Gym-khana, the Placement Cell and the Alumni Cell. The students of the department also carry out the activities of the student chapter of IIChe; the Guwahati Regional Centre based at IITG, is one of the most active regional centres in the country.

Thesis Projects

The B.Tech curriculum being mult-disciplinary in nature, serves the purpose of exposing students to various aspects of chemical engi-neering while simultaneously devel-oping their problem solving capabili-ties. The program spans over eight semesters which allows students to gradually imbibe students the basic fundamentals of chemical engineer-ing and apply them to the complex problems faced by the industry to-day, thereby, equipping them for their future careers.

The M.Tech programme in Chemi-cal Engineering with specializaton in Petroleum Refinery Engineering is unique among all IIT’s in the country. It is a four semester program having two semesters completely dedicated to project work. Admission to theM.Tech program is offered through Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE). The curriculum streamlines the interests of the students in the frontier area of petroleum engineer-ing.

The PhD program is aimed at help-ing the student acquire proficiency in their chosen area, being both ex-haustive and rigorous. The presence of an able and experienced faculty as a mentor provides an environ-ment conducive to achieve the ex-pertise required for a doctorate de-gree. Presently, there are 31 research scholars working in experimental and theoretical projects related to various areas of chemical engineer-ing such as Fuel Cell, Membrane Separation Technology, Waste-Water Treatment and Process Control and Optimization.

Departmental Laboratories

Students also get the opportunity to participate in various projects pertaining to finding solutions to industrial problems, as part of their Bachelor and Master Thesis, which lasts for 3 semesters. These projects pertain to the field of:

+ Computational Fluid Dynamics+ Chemical Reaction Engineering+ Polymer Technology

+Fluid Mechanics Laboratory+Heat and Mass Transfer Laboratory+Mechanical Operations Laboratory+Thermodynamics Laboratory

+Petroleum Laboratory+Process Control Laboratory+Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory

+ Process Control & Instrumentation+ Petroleum Engineering+ Microfluidics and Nanofluidics+ Optimization Techniques+ Membrane Technology+ Fuel Cell + Cavitation Engineering

In order to fully understand the practical applications of the theoretical courses taught as a part of the B.Tech curriculum, students pursue a compulsory summer internship in their 6th semester. A brief overview of the organizations where the present batch has interned:

Some of the students also gained international exposure by doing their internships in universities abroad such as University of Michigan (USA), Max Planck Society (Germany), National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan), Monash University (Australia), University of Surrey (U.K), University of Karlsruhe (Germany).
