ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.1

Standard 52.1 reports average filtration efficiency by measuring the “spot” created after challenging the filter with atmospheric dust (dust found normally in the environment). The test uses an aerosol made with KCL that can yield inaccurate, non-repeatable comparisons among filters, manufacturers or test laboratories.

Since the test measures average efficiency over the life of the filter, initially the clean filter gives lower values than those reported. Efficiency increases as the filter begins to load up with dust until enough of the filter is clogged to decrease the amount of air that can flow through it.

Standard 52.1 does measure dust-holding capacity, which allows an owner or facility manager to compare the relative service life of similarly designed filters. The standard also measures arrestance, the percentage of test dust, by weight that a filter can capture. This is useful tool for evaluating the performance of very low efficiency filters.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2

Standard 52.2 is a testing procedure that evaluates the performance

of air cleaning devices as they remove specific-diameter particles.

Here, standardized dust is fed into the air cleaning device at intervals

to simulate the accumulation of particles during the filter's normal

service life. The standard describes how to generate the aerosols

required for conducting the test and establishes a method for

counting airborne particles sized between 0.30µ and 10µ. The count

of specific-size particles both upstream and downstream of the test

filter determines its efficiency. The standard also prescribes

necessary equipment requirements and describes how to report test

results. For the hospital engineer, the reporting mechanism is most

useful.

v Mini-pleat 'separator-less' filter.

v Thin and lightweight easy-to-handle units.

v Available in many standard and custom made sizes.

v Spectrum's HEPA filters are backed by nationwide on-site validation service.

Description

Our 'hot-melt mini-pleat' f i l ter design configuration increases its energy efficiency due to lower pressure drop in comparison to conventional deep pleat HEPA. The 'Spectra Mini-Pleat' filters are thus the lowest-cost filters to operate over the filter's life. In new applications, using 'Spectra Mini-pleat' HEPA filters can reduce the cost and size of the filter housing. Spectrum's mini-pleat HEPA filters offer outstanding performance and are factory scanned before they reach the customer. Individual testing under rigid quality control and modern assemb ly me thods ensu res conformance to specifications.

Spectra Auto Viscous

Description

Auto Roll filter units are available in a wide range of size and feature options. The filter uses an Industrial grade fiberglass media which automatically renews when prompted by a pressure drop based sensor. Along with pressure drop sensing the filter also has media run out alarm. The intelligent control panel can be placed besides the filter unit or can be integrated with the centralized building control. The unit is equipped with a totally enclosed thermally protected motor.

Advantages

The Spectra Auto Roll filter is suitable for area where it is desirable to have filters that do not need to be attended for prolonged periods of time. It is ideal for textile lint and dusts, monomer and polymer dusts, general ventilation air etc. This filter is successfully used in tunnel ventilation of under ground mass transit systems.

Description

Spectra Auto Viscous filter is a self-cleaning viscous air filter using a rotating curtain of metal screen as the filtering media. Behind the filter media roll is an endless roll of oil drop eliminator. When the filter media is loaded and the pressure drop increases, a totally enclosed thermally protected geared motor moves the filter media and oil drop eliminator which pass through a viscous oil bath located at the bottom of the filter. The viscous oil cleans the filter media and the oil drop eliminator ensures that the oil is not carried into the air stream. The sludge collected in the oil bath needs to be cleaned periodically.

Advantages

v The Spectra Auto Viscous filter is especially suitable for areas with high dust concentration like steel, chemical and cement plants.

v Requires little or no maintenance for a prolonged period of time.

v Available in a variety of standard and custom built sizes.

v Negligible operations cost.

The ASHRAE 52.2 - 1999 test method which uses a particle counter and a defined solid aerosol to determine efficiency of a filter is the latest air filter test standard to be published by the "American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers" (ASHRAE).

We have set up an ASHRAE 52.2 Test Rig at our new manufacturing and test facility with the objective of answering a very commonly asked question "What is the efficiency of the filter in terms of particle size".

The old ASHRAE 52.1 test standard measures the efficiency of a filter using a cumbersome dust spot sampler and opacity meter. The efficiency results were based on the air filter's ability to reduce the staining potential of atmospheric dust. The test procedure did not measure "Particle Size efficiency".

To answer this often asked question about "Particle Size Efficiency" we have set up an ASHRAE 52.2 test rig. We acknowledge the immense support received from Mr Erik Kuiper - Director Technical at Filtrair b.v., Netherlands in building this test rig. Mr Kuiper is a member of the ASHRAE committee that wrote this standard.
