Training for the Single Pilot Multi-Engine Instrument Rating

Growing demand for helicopter operations

worldwide has created a strong need for

highly-skilled pilots capable of safely

operating in challenging environments.

These environments often require flight

into instrument meteorological conditions,

where high-quality training and good

judgment ensure optimal safety and flight

efficiency.

  Bristow Academy has been training

professional pilots to take their place in

the world of commercial helicopter

aviation since 1987. Through four

campuses on two continents, Bristow

Academy has trained hundreds of pilots

now working for major commercial

helicopter companies around the world.

  Bristow Academy’s Gloucestershire campus specialises

in training pilots for the single pilot multi-engine instrumentrating, and the AS355 type rating. The five courses

provided by the Gloucestershire campus have been

carefully designed to provide the very finest training,

producing skilled pilots fully qualified to safely operate in

difficult environments.

In keeping with Bristow Academy’s more than two-

decade tradition of providing helicopter flight training to the

highest standards, the Gloucestershire IR and type rating

programmes are managed and taught by professional

pilots with many years and thousands of hours of opera-

tional experience in the real world of commercial aviation.

The Instrument Rating Courses

Bristow Academy provides two courses for the instrument

rating. Both courses progress along highly-structured

training schedules to optimise efficiency, while leaving

adequate time and resources to address individual

trainees’ specific needs.

The Single Pilot Multi-Engine Instrument Rating.

This course includes an extensive ground school,

complemented by an instrument flying module that

includes time in an FNPT II AS350/355 Flight Simulator

and an IFR AS355 helicopter. Ground school lessons are

immediately followed by flying the subject matter in the

simulator, optimising training efficiency while building a

solid knowledge and skill base. Subjects studied include:

• ILS Procedures

• ADF/NDB Theory and Procedures

• Holding Procedures and Patterns

• UK CAA IFR Regulations

• Wind/Time/Drift Calculations • UK IFR R/T Procedures

• UK Airspace Classifications

• ATC Procedures

This course is designed to be completed in seven weeks,

and will include 40 hours of simulator and 10 hours of

helicopter flying time. Students should be prepared for

additional training time to accommodate weather or other

operational delays.

Course completion will qualify the pilot for the JAR Single

Pilot Multi-Engine Instrument Rating and the AS355 Type

Rating.

Qualified Service Pilot Instrument Rating.  This course is

available at two separate levels to match the type of military

rating held.

For pilots holding or having held a Non-Procedural

Rating, the course includes a minimum of 15 hours of

combined simulator and in-flight training, combined with

an extensive ground school package featuring exercisesand procedures not generally flown on a military Non-

Procedural Rating, including:

• ILS Procedures

• ADF/NDB Theory and Procedures

• Holding Procedures and Patterns

• UK/CAA IFR Regulations

For pilots holding or having held a Procedural Rating,

the coursework is tailored to the student in a “training as

required” format. Typically, the course will consist of 2 or 3

flight simulator sessions and 3 to 5 hours of flying.

At the conclusion of each of the Qualified Service Pilot

courses, the pilot will qualify for the JAR Single Pilot Multi

Engine Instrument Rating.

FAA to JAA IR Conversion. This is a very intensive course

of at least 15 hours.

The flying element of the course consists of 10 hours of

instruction in the AS350/355 FNPT II flight simulator and 5

hours of instrument flying in an IFR AS355.

Subjects covered in the flight and ground work include:

• ILS Procedures

• ADF/NDB Theory and Procedures

• Holding Procedures and Patterns

• UK CAA IFR Regulations

• Wind/Time/Drift Calculations

• UK IFR R/T Procedures • UK Airspace Classifications

Course duration is 3 weeks, but students should be

prepared for additional time and training if needed.

At the conclusion of the course, pilots will qualify for the

JAR Single Pilot Multi Engine Instrument Rating.

Fixed Wing to IR Rotary Conversion. This course

consists of a minimum of 10 hours of instruction in the

aircraft, in addition to the ground and simulator time

necessary to meet proficiency standards. The course takes

approximately 7 to 10 days, and culminates with the pilot

qualifying for the JAR Single Pilot Multi Engine Instrument

Rating.

AS355 Type Rating.  Available to pilots with or without an

existing Twin Engine Rating. For pilots with a Twin Engine

Rating, the course consists of 3 days of technical instruc-

tion and 3 hours of flying, plus the test.

For pilots without a Twin Engine Rating, an additional 5

hours of flying is required.

Both courses lead to the AS355 Type Rating.
