Discover Lyonand the Rhône‐Alpes region

Situated in the heart of the city of Lyon, theInstitute of French Language and Culture at theCatholic University of Lyon offers students theadvantage of being the second largest city in France. The city is the economic capital of the Rhône‐Alpesregion, a very dynamic region, a crossroad betweennorth and south, near Switzerland and Italy. Themeeting of its two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône,gives the city its charm. It takes only two hours to reach Paris by TGV. Thecity is not far from the sea (one and a half hours byTGV) and the mountains (the Alps).

The city of culture, science and industry The city of Lyon is a cultural center. You can go tothe Opera and to the National Orchestra of Lyon, or tothe National Conservatory of Music and the "ThéâtreNational Populaire". Sciences are also well represented in Lyon becausethe city has many international research centers forrare diseases (le laboratoire P4) and research centersfor cancer (le Centre Léon Bérard). As far as industryis concerned, chemistry takes an important role at theFrench Institute of Petrol and at Rhône Poulenc. Lyon is also the European headquarters of Interpoland Euronews (an informational TV channelbroadcasted in every European language). In choosing Lyon, you have the possibility to study atthe Catholic University, in one of the three Universitiesor in a "Grande Ecole" (for example the School ofArchitecture, the National school of Construction, theSchool of Management of Lyon and the School ofTheatre).

History of Lyon, from Lugdunum to today Lyon was once called Lugdunum and was the Romancapital of Three Gauls. It was also a major Europeancrossroads and capital of printing during the sixteenthcentury. Moreover, Lyon is the capital of silk andrepresented the end of the silk road from China. Manyfamous people were born in Lyon including André MarieAmpère (discoverer of electromagnetism), the Lumièrebrothers (inventors of cinema) and Antoine de Saint‐Exupéry (aviator and author of the Petit Prince). Lyon has been the center of many great historicalevents. The work of the canuts (silk weavers) madeLyon an important city during the IndustrialRevolution. During World War II, the Prefect JeanMoulin made Lyon the center of the Resistancemovement. Lyon is also the capital of gastronomy. Beaujolaiswine is made in the nearby countryside. It is servedoften with Lyon sausage or a plate of deliciousquenelles.

The Institute of French Language and Culture (ILCF)was created in 1948 by the College of Liberal Arts atthe Catholic University of Lyon. The Institute hasconnections with numerous institutes and universitiesin France and abroad.

Studies open to the worldThe courses are created for everyone wishing to learnFrench or to improve their knowledge of the Frenchlanguage and culture in an international environment.Classes are made up of students from all around theworld.

Linguistic abilitiesCourses are organized in language level groups basedon each individual's language level. These levelscorrespond to the European Framework of Referencefor Languages. Communicative language activitiesincrease the following competences:• reception: listening, reading,• production: written and oral expression,• communication: conversation skills,• mediation: translation and interpretation activities.

Progression of the courses and the documents usedCourses are designed to help students gain autonomyin their use of French. This is done through activitiesthat encourage students to practice oral and writtencomprehension and expression. The language activitiesgiven to students are varied but are based on agrammar book, a workbook of exercises, originaldocuments (press, cartoon strips, texts, videos, etc.)and integrative excursions as the ILCF is located in theheart of the city. Students should progress in grammarand language use, and their knowledge of Frenchculture as a result. It is important to note that activestudent participation is required to see thisprogression.

The validation of knowledgeOrganized in accordance to the European CreditsTransfer System (ECTS), the programs offered at theInstitute are validated by diplomas awarded by theCatholic University. These diplomas can be translatedinto equivalent credits or units at universities, collegesor institutes abroad. Students also have theopportunity to sit for the examinations offered by theNational Education Board, for example the DELF, theDALF, or the TCF because ILCF is an officialexamination center.

The ILCF Lyon offers several language programs to helpyou discover, explore, and master the French Languageand Culture. Adapted to your learning rhythm, yourlanguage level, and your needs, each program iscreated to help you progress following the CommonEuropean Frame of Reference for Languages. Choosethe program you think is most appropriate from theoptions below and refer to the corresponding page formore information.

Semi‐Intensive Semestrial Program >> page 7 16 hours of courses per week. A choice of two semesters (from October to Januaryand from February to May) to study for a semester orfor a complete academic year. Courses for all language levels which are based oncommunicative methods that encourage autonomy inthe use of French. Progression based on the improvement of linguisticskills that follows the European Framework forLanguages. Language and Civilization courses to improve yourFrench. Preparation for national language diplomas (DELFand DALF) integrated into coursework. DU of French Studies: diploma delivered at the endof the program which validates the language levelreached (30 university credits).

Intensive Semestrial Program >> page 8 20 hours of courses per week. A choice of two semesters (from October to Januaryand from February to May) to study for a semester orfor a complete academic year. Courses for all language levels which are based oncommunicative methods that encourage autonomy inthe use of French. Progression based on the improvement of linguisticskills that follows the European Framework forLanguages. Language and Civilization courses to improve yourFrench. Intensive Monthly Program >> page 12 72 hours of courses over 4 weeks. Courses which are based on communicative methodsthat encourage autonomy in the use of French. CLCF: certificate delivered at the end of theprogram which validates the language level reached (8university credits).

Intensive Summer Program >> page 14 A choice of three months (July, August andSeptember) for language immersion. 20 hours of courses per week for a 4, 8 or 12 weekperiod. Courses for all language levels which are based oncommunicative methods that encourage autonomy inthe use of French. Language and Civilization Units to improve yourFrench and to learn in a fun way. Activity counselors to help you discover Lyon and toenjoy yourself with students from as many as fiftydifferent countries. DU of French Studies or CLCF: diploma or certificatedelivered at the end of the program which validatesthe language level reached (9 university credits).

Specialized French Program >> page 11 36 hours of courses for each program to specializein French for Business or in French for the Tourism andHotel Industry. Courses for professionals or students wishing tospeak specialized French. A program validated by 3 university credits. Several sessions of exams (DFP Affaires B2,DFP Affaires C1, DFP Tourisme et Hôtellerie B1) inJanuary and/or in May‐June to validate your skills inspecialized French.

ILCF Lyon gives you the opportunity to certify yourknowledge in French language and culture by takingthe following exams:

University Diplomas

ILCF is a member of the ADCUEFE which regroups 30FFL French universities and as such, provides thefollowing certificates and diplomas:

DU d'Etudes Françaises: Diplôme Universitaired'Etudes FrançaisesIf you are enrolled in a semester or in an academicyear‐long program of the ILCF Lyon (intensive or semi‐intensive), regular assessments, exams and your activeparticipation in class should allow you to obtain auniversity diploma. The level of this diplomacorresponds to the level reached: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1,C2 (levels from the European Framework of Referencefor Languages).

CLCF: Certificat de Langue et de Culture Françaises(French Language and Culture Certificate) deliveredafter completion of the ongoing assessments forIntensive Monthly and Summer Programs. The level ofthis certificate corresponds to the level reached: A1,A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 (levels from the EuropeanFramework of Reference for Languages).

University credits (ECTS)If you are a student in a foreign university, we provideyou with a detailed list of grades (university credits)that you have obtained in the Institute or in anotherdepartment of the University. University creditscorrespond to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

Placement TestWe organize a mandatory test to evaluate your writtenand oral proficiency in French so that we can placeyou in the appropriate level group.

DiplomasThe training is validated by a language diplomacertified by the ADCUEFE (federation of UniversityInstitutes of FLE).A DU of French Studies (Diplôme Universitaire d'EtudesFrançaises) corresponding to your language level isprovided at the end of the program. During yourstudies at the ILCF Lyon, the Institute gives you theopportunity to take the following exams: DELF, DALF,TCF and CCIP (see page 6).

Validation of creditsCourses are validated by ongoing assessments and 30university credits (ECTS).

Proof of enrollmentIn the beginning of the program and after completionof the registration, we provide you with a proof ofenrollment and a student identification card.

Theater“Replace words with gestures and play around withwords… it’s as good a way as any to express oneself!”The theater workshop should be seen in the samelight as a creative civilization course where theemphasis is placed on having fun, playing games andgroup interactions.

The contemporary History of FranceIn this workshop, French History from World War II tonowadays will be discussed. We will try tounderstand through meaningful historical events howthis country has changed during the 20 th century.

GastronomyThroughout this course we will respond to the questionof what makes great French cuisine. We will also studytable manners and French specialties.

FashionClothing is a threshold between us and the rest of theworld. It is the expression of our identity, ouraffiliation to a social class and our support foraesthetics.

Mixed Practices/Fine Arts and FrenchFine Arts? This is all that comes to painting, sculptureand the image in general. This workshop is dedicatedto all students with no need of a technical knowledge.Through practical activities, we will investigate on ourrepresentation of the world and the way we interpretwhat we can see. Learning a language is also a way tounderstand its codes, its symbols and its references. Itis also entering its pictural universe.

Creative WritingFrom wordplay to handwritten and typed fantasies toodd literary techniques, this workshop will focus ondifferent literary movements that ‘played around’ withthe French language. It’s a voyage into the universe ofunique and amusing literature.

ObjectivesThe French for Business Program encouragesstudents to effectively use oral and written French inprincipal professional communication and to be foundoperational in relational, administrative andcommercial functions of business where the use ofFrench is largely foreseeable. It encourages studentsto acquire a solid mastery of written and oral Frenchin the workplace. The student also will gainknowledge of social and professional norms andhierarchal constraints and will have masteredappropriate language usage to adapt to these varyingsituations.

The French for the Hotel and Tourism IndustryProgram encourages students to acquire functionalcompetence in French limited to situations relevant totourism and the hotel industry. After completion ofthis program the student will be capable of usingFrench to interact with other professionals in theworkplace. This program allows students to validatetheir linguistic knowledge on a professional level.

Diverselanguage activities are offered including workbooks,exercise books and original documents (press,advertising, comics, literature, videos, etc.).Integrative excursions allow students to get to knowthe City of Lyon (markets, train stations, cafes,librairies and neighborhood visits, francophone week).Courses require the active participation of students.

AdmissionStudents must be at least 18 years old and be inpossession of a diploma indicating completion ofsecondary school in their country, with exception tothe monthly and the summer intensive programs.

Pre‐enrollmentPre‐enrollment is obligatory in order to receive astudent visa. To pre‐enroll, send the application with :

the pre‐enrollment form a deposit of 366 € for semester programs, 610 € forthe academic year, 191 € for the intensive monthcourses and the summer sessions, (this deposit will bededucted from the total amount of enrollment fees. Itwill not be reimbursed in case of withdrawal).

Student VisaAfter completion of the pre‐enrolment process, theILCF will send you a pre‐enrollment certificate. Thisdocument will be needed to obtain your student visa.Any student staying longer than 3 months in France orwishing to benefit from student status must take thefirst administrative steps by addressing the FrenchEmbassy or French Consulate in their own country.

Visa refusalIf the visa is denied by the country of origin and if youprovide us with the original of the official documentconfirming the refusal, the deposit will be reimbursed,except for € 130 to cover administrative costs. Thisonly takes place if the secretary is informed by awritten document a minimum of 8 days before thelevel test.

EnrollmentIn order to finish enrollment, students have to come tothe ILCF office with the following documents:

The inscription payment must be completed within adelay of no more than 15 days after the level test.

For security reasons, we encourage the students to usean international bank card.

Breach of contract / CancellationPre‐registered students who decide to cancel or quitwill not be refunded. The whole payment alreadysettled will remain the property of ILCF Lyon.

Resident card / OFII procedureThe ILCF Lyon will take care of your OFII or residentcard file as soon as you have completed yourenrollment.

It is necessary to have a resident card in order to applyfor housing financial assistance "CAF", or for a job.

ILCF Lyon Students CouncilEach year, students of the ILCF designate arepresentative from each group to create the "StudentAssociation" (BDE ILCF). These representativesorganize activities for all ILCF students.The fee is 6.00 euros for 2012/2013.Email : [email protected]

LibraryAll students are required to pay a library membershipfee. This membership grants access to all of the LyonUniversity Libraries. The cost of this membership is24.00 euros for the 2012/2013 school year.

Civil Liability InsuranceAll French and foreign students must apply for the civilliability insurance. The price is 4.88 euros for theacademic year 2012/2013.

Medical InsuranceSince October 1, 1999, all foreign students under theage of 28 (with the exception of residents of theEuropean Union) must subscribe to a medical insurancepolicy in France (according to the June 29th decree inthe "Journal Officiel" from July 10th 1999). The cost ofthis insurance is 207.00 € for 2012/2013.

Students from the European Union should bring withthem their European Health Insurance Card (carteeuropéenne d’Assurance Maladie) issued in theirown country.
