Mobility is no longer a trend; it is a phenomenon. Employees can get work done anywhere, at any time, using virtually any device. Cisco refers to this movement as “Work, Your Way” and the cornerstone of this new paradigm is the unified workspace, which brings together the tools of collaboration and knowledge sharing without requiring workers to physically come together.

All of this spells opportunity for independent software vendors (ISVs). By helping to build the Work, Your Way vision, you can transform the mobile phenomenon into more value for your customers, and expand your reach into new markets.

Cisco is uniquely capable of providing assistance. The Cisco® Unified Workspace, combined with Cisco BYOD, other Cisco Smart Solutions, and your value-added innovations, can help you get your share of the mobility market. Combining your application with a validated network provides your mobile users an unencumbered experience, helping them to get up and running faster and with less effort.

Addressing CEO Aspirations, CIO Imperatives, and Employee NeedsThe promise of the unified workspace only becomes reality if solutions meet the needs of all stakeholders, from senior management to technology leaders to the workers themselves.

From the CEO’s perspective, the fundamental question is the business value of employee mobility. The CEO must see clear advantages and contributions to profitable growth. A unified workspace solution must deliver:

• Speed of innovation – CEOs need to understand how tablets, smart-phones, and the rise of remote workplaces contribute to enterprise-wide innovation.

• Workforce productivity – CEOs want to attract the best talent and cultivate greater workforce productivity. However, for the next-generation workforce, salary is no longer the only consideration. These employees need to be mobile to achieve their maximum productivity and satisfaction.

• Business effectiveness – CEOs want to understand exactly how employee mobility enhances business efficiency.

The CIO has a slightly different view of the challenges and imperatives of a mobile workforce:

• Empowerment – CIOs want to empower the business by delivering the best tools and processes to increase efficiency.

• Agility – Maintaining business agility is also a key challenge, en route to delivering high levels of productivity.

• Operating efficiency – CIOs want to reduce complexity to deliver the best results at the lowest cost.

• Security – The unified workspace will remain a vision unless the CIO can be assured that it can be secured, that it will protect intellectual property, and that it will comply with corporate and regulatory policies.

Workers want freedom. They want the ability to choose the devices they use and the time and the place for work, without having to constantly comply with onerous corporate standards and mandates.

What If You Could Solve It All?The ideal Work, Your Way solution would address all these challenges at the same time. It would speed innovation while lowering IT costs and complexity. It would give employees greater freedom of choice while protecting sensitive information and intellectual property. It would let teams work without compromising the way your business works.

You can achieve all of these capabilities through one application: the Unified Workspace by Cisco.

The Unified Workspace—delivered on a Cisco Intelligent Network—is the Cisco vision for the mobile enterprise. The idea behind the Unified Workspace is to make all of the vital expertise and resources needed for productive, collaborative work portable, so employees can take them (or at least access them) from wherever they are on whatever device they choose with an enhanced quality of experience.

Some things they will access on the device itself—for example, the platform-independent versions of Cisco collaboration applications such as Cisco WebEx® and Cisco Jabber®. Other resources will be accessed virtually—for example, a virtual desktop with full application and rich-media collaboration capabilities using the Cisco Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI).

The overall goal is to make it so employees don’t have to worry about where they are or what device they are using. Their workspace, everything that makes them efficient and productive, moves with them. The Unified Workspace is about empowering enterprises, including ISVs and their customers, to bring together people and resources through an intelligent network platform that sustains profitable growth and increased productivity.

Figure 1. Cisco Unified Workspace Use Cases

Whether the customer needs a unified workspace solution because of a BYOD initiative or as a result of a virtual desktop initiative, the Cisco Unified Workspace gives them the flexibility to implement the features, functionality, and capabilities they need.

Differentiated Solutions from CiscoCisco is uniquely positioned to help ISVs and your customers build a workspace strategy and network that delivers:

• A superior experience – While many networks can push the packets for voice, video, and collaboration, Cisco has looked at the issue from every level and can offer a superior experience. From innovations at the network level such as Medianet, Cisco CleanAir™ Technology, and ClientLink, all the way through rich video and voice-enabled collaboration applications such as Jabber and WebEx, Cisco supports an exceptional experience that promotes employee productivity.

• Accelerated innovation – Cisco looks beyond what you can do with your routers, switches, and firewalls and asks, “How will this help you add new value, improve your business, or provide new opportunities?”

• Improved risk profile – Security is not just an out-of-the-box solution. The only scalable way to build security is to build it into every node and every layer of the network. Cisco takes this broader approach.

• Cost effectiveness – Cisco provides smart solutions that have been pre-tested and extensively documented to allow your IT department to deploy more quickly at lower cost. In addition, Cisco has one of the best investment protection records in the industry, further reducing costs.

• Business agility – Cisco has solutions for wherever you are in the Work, Your Way spectrum, whether native or virtual. Our goal is not to force you into a one-size-fits-all solution, but to work with you to develop a strategy that addresses your most pressing technical and business needs, while preparing you for the future.
