(MS) -- The best vacations lift usout of the frenzy of our lives, whisking us off to faraway placesthat relax and rejuvenate us.

Yet a great vacation can also be agreat financial strain as well -- andreally, how relaxing is that?Especially since once the trip isover, there's typically little to showfor all the expense beyond a fewsnapshots you can post onFacebook.

So how do you meet the pressingneed for a stress-reducing changeof scenery without wiping out yoursavings in the process? The solu-tion may actually be simpler, andcloser, than you think: Open yourown back door, and begin imagin-ing the leisure possibilities rightbeyond your doorstep!

Instead of throwing a bunch ofmoney at a short-term getaway, consider investing a portion of itinto transforming your back yardinto a personal relaxation oasis.

Don't be put off by how big a taskthat sounds. Start out simple, mak-ing additional changes as financesallow, and inspiration strikes.

To begin with, your yard mayneed some degree of facelift. Hire aquality professional landscaperwho can design around native plantspecies, for maximum benefit andminimal upkeep.

Yet landscaping is really only set-

ting the stage -- you still need somekind of show-stopper to completeyour yard's transformation.

Pools and decks are whoppingfinancial commitments. There is,however, a less bank-breaking pathto backyard-relaxation bliss: Investin the very symbol of relaxationitself. Invest in a hammock andhammock stand.

"Repeat customers are alwaystelling me the best mini-vacationthey've ever bought has been ahammock and a hammock stand,"says J.R. Pelletier, manager ofTheHammockCompany.com, an

international leader in hammocksales. "A good hammock can feel asif you've just caught a flightstraight out of your stressful dailylife."

Plus, a quality fabric hammockcan make your yard look as prettyas a vacation postcard as well.Recent advances in all-weathersynthetic textiles have vastlyexpanded design and color optionsfor fabric hammocks.

"It used to be fabric hammockswere just drab," notes Walter R.Perkins III, CEO of TheHammockSource, the world'slargest manufacturer and seller ofhammocks. "Owning one meantwatching what little color it hadfade like a flower by summer's end.But today, a quality fabric ham-mock can be a show-stopper foryour yard, for many seasons tocome."

Add an arc-style cypress or faux-wicker hammock stand, and youroutdoor living space becomes notonly a gorgeous relaxation destina-tion, but also one that requires nochecked-baggage fees or full-bodyscans to get to!

Your favorite patch of yard isfinally the primo spot for unwind-ing, a personal relaxation space forletting your mind wander to allthose distant getaway places youmight one day like to go. But fornow, you're pretty content rightwhere you are, aren't you?SH112458

Few harbingers of spring are morespectacular to look at than the varietyof butterflies that take to the skiesafter they emerge from chrysalis.

Although it is widely known thatbutterflies and moths go through ametamorphosis to turn into their fin-ished forms, many are unaware justhow many steps it takes for a butterflyto be ready to fly.

1. A butterfly begins its life as an egg, which a female butterfly lays on a par-ticular plant that the species of butter-fly prefers to eat. This is called a hostplant. Butterflies are very particularabout the type of plant that they eat.Certain species will only eat one typeof plant or closely related varieties.

2. When a butterfly hatches fromthe egg, it is called a larva, or a firstinstar caterpillar. The insect is verysmall and does nothing but eat fromthe host plant.

3. Caterpillars are voracious eaters, and they grow very quickly. The trou-ble is that their skin cannot grow. Anew, larger skin must be formed. To dothis the caterpillar must molt its oldskin so that the new, larger skin canemerge. As it eats, a caterpillar will gothrough a few stages depending on thespecies. It may become a second, third, fourth, and fifth instar caterpil-lar.

4. A caterpillar that has molted sev-eral times may look very differentfrom its initial larval form. It will bemuch larger and may have differentcolors and features.

5. During the final molt, the discard-ed skin will become part of thechrysalis that will house the caterpil-lar as it pupates. The caterpillar spinsa silk girdle that attaches it to a partic-ular location, either on a tree branch

or a plant stem.6. Contrary to popular belief, butter-

flies are not formed in cocoons. Theirpupa is called a chrysalis. Only somevarieties of moths transform inside ofa cocoon. In the chrysalis, the caterpil-lar is undergoing a rapid transforma-tion. The chewing mouthparts areturning into the sucking mouthpartsof a butterfly. Wings and antennae arealso forming. The pupa stage is notmerely a hibernation for the caterpil-lar. It is a time of very active growth.

7. About 10 to 14 days later the but-terfly will emerge from the chrysalis.Upon doing so the wings will be wetand small. The butterfly then pumpsfluids through the wings to expandthem. It also needs to get used to fly-ing. A recently hatched butterfly isvery vulnerable until its wings areready and dry.

8. An adult butterfly eats nectar andreproduces to begin the life cycleanew. Relatively speaking, a butterflyhas a short life span. Some species liveonly a few days. Others may live up toa year. This can make viewing a spec-tacularly hued butterfly in a springgarden even more poignant for theobserver.

More than 700 species of butterfliesare found in North America. In orderto attract them to the backyard, home-owners can plant wildlife that nur-tures all stages of the metamorphosis.

Adult butterflies looking for nectarwill seek out plants in the sunlight;rarely do they feed in the shade. Plantsshould have red, yellow, orange, pink,or purple blossoms. Flat-topped orclustered flowers are preferred, as areshort flower tubes that enable the but-terfly's proboscis to fit in easily.GT114591
