and flint, consisting of chancel with vestries and organ chamber over on the north, and a chapel on the south side, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled tower at the west end of the south aisle, with an octagonal turret at the north-west angle: the tower contains a clock and 8 bells, hung in 1877, and the nave is surrounded on three sides by deep galleries : there is reason to believe that a church existed here in the Norman period, which was almost entirely rebuilt during the 14th century, but of the mediaeval church there are now only very few remains ; in the last century, about 1792, the structure seems to have been either rebuilt in red brick, or so remodelled in that material as to have retained but few features of the previously existing edifice; in 1830 the body of the church appears to have been again rebuilt, and in 1873 fresh alterations were made, when the interior was reseated, the galleries new fronted, the font restored and a new reredos and pulpit introduced, at a total cost of .£2,451, but the tower, dating from the 15th century, has remained untouched; the organ was erected in 1876, at a cost of £970, defrayed by the late Sir E. H. Scott bart. : of the ancient church there remains the basin of the font, a square block of Pur- beck marble, with plainly arcaded sides, and probably dating from the 12th century, a massive oak door of the 14th century, and a very interesting, but mutilated, arched recess of the later 13th century, the triangular head of which has been completed and the cusps restored ; and the recess, now placed on the north side of the chancel, serves as a credence: the west wall of the nave, belonging to the 15th century, contains a flat-arched window, now filled with glass removed from the former east window, erected in September, 1857, by Lord Farnborough : in 1884 the church was enlarged by the addition of the chancel, with south aisle or chapel, and vestries with organ chamber above, on the north side, in the Decorated style, from designs by Mr. T. Gr. Jackson m A. architect, at a cost of nearly £4,000; these being consecrated December 16th, 1884: the work is of brick, faced with flint and dressings of Doulting stone externally, all the internal architectural features being in white chalk : the chancel is fitted with oak stalls, and an open oak screen divides it from the aisles : on the south side of the sacrarium are triple sedilia of elegant design, richly crocketed : the floor of the chancel is laid down with white and grey marble, and there is a pulpit of open worked tracery in oak, on a stone base, and a brass lectern : in the chancel aisle are two stained windows, erected as a memorial to Charles Robinson Harker, d. January 12th, 1885: the church contains various brasses, and a number of monuments of considerable interest: in the chancel is an inscribed brass to Isabella, wife of Richard Lacer, a former mayor of London, ob. 1361: on the floor is a large slab with brass effigies and

inscription to Richard Thornhill esq. of Bromley, ob. Feb. 15, 1600, his two wives and children, and there are others to the Younge family, including John Younge, bishop of Rochester, ob. 1605 »in the chancel is also an elaborate monument, adorned with arms, official insignia and books, to Zachary Pearce d.d. successively bishop of Bangor and Rochester, d. June 29, 1774, and Mary his wife, d. Oct. 23, 1773 : here also is a monument representing cherubs supporting drapery, inscribed to Harington Bagshawe, curate of Bromley and rector of Woolwich, d. May 29, 1739 ; and there are other memorials to Thomas Bagshaw, also curate and rector of Southflete, d. Nov. 20, 1787 ; and Henry Smith d.d. vicar here and rector of Bradley, Hants, d. July 22, 1818: in the chancel aisle is a finely-wrought monument of white and coloured marbles to Thomas Chase esq. of Bromley Common, and Sarah his wife, 1754-60 ; and in the south gallery another monument to Thomas Chase esq. their son, 1788 : the galleries also contain a series of memorials to thcScotts, of Sundridge Park, including one to Sir Edward Henry Scott bart. d. Aug. 1, 1883, and others to families of the same name, some of these being related to the ducal house of Buccleuch: there is also a large monument to John Hawkesworth ll.d. the friend of Dr. Johnson, d. 1773: another to John Gifford, the biographer of Pitt, d. 1818 ; and several to the Boyd, Raikes and Norman families: at the west end of the centre aisle is the gravestone of Elizabeth, wife of Dr. Samuel Johnson, with a Latin inscription from his pen ; she died March 17, 1752 : on the external wall of the south aisle is a slab with a long inscription to Elizabeth Monk, d. 1753, aged 101 ; and a small tablet to Martine French, 1661, and four of his wives : in the churchyard, enlarged in 1845. are altar tombs of good design, with shields of arms, to the Gratwicke, Tanner and Emmett families, others to the families of Evans, Dewar, May and Wollaston, a large railed tomb to Sir Samuel Scott bart. d. Sept. 30, 1849, and near the lich gate, constructed in 1855, at a cost of £70, from the designs of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, is a lofty obelisk of granite, erected to Coles Child esq. d. 1875: the principal entrance to the church is at the west

end, reached through an avenue formed by four spreading yew trees of considerable age : adjoining the churchyard on the west are the grounds of the old rectory: the church plate includes a silver-gilt chalice with cover, given in 1791 by George Norman esq.; two silver-gilt patens, given in 1803 by Robert Makepeace esq.; a silver-gilt chalice with corer, dated 1807 ; and a silver flagon, given in 1854 by the Rev. James Edward Newell m.a. vicar, 1820-65: thechurch has 1,200 sittings, of which 250 are free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1558 ; burials, 1578; marriages, 1575. The living is a vicarage, yearly value of the endowment being £150 (increased by fees and Easter offerings), gross income £500, including 71 acres of glebe and house, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Arthur Gresley Hellicar m.a . of Wradham College, Oxford, and surrogate.

St. John the Evangelist’s is an ecclesiastical parish, formed December 17th, 1880, out of the mother parish and embraces that portion lying between Plaistow and Widmore. The register dates from the year 1880. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £206, net yearly value about £300, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Bromley, and held since 1881 by the Rev. The church is licensed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and has 350 sittings. The living is an incumbency, held since 1890 by the Rev. Charles HolenL.D. of Richmond University, U. S. A.

The Congregational church, situated in the Widmore road, and opened in 1882 by the Rev. Henry Allon d.d. is a building of red brick with stone dressings in the Romanesque style, from designs by Mr. Truefitt, architect, of London, and with the schools and lecture room has cost nearly £14,500, raised wholly by subscription: the church was enlarged by the addition of transepts in 1886, at a cost of £4,500, and has now sittings for 900 persons.

The Baptist chapel, Park road, built in 1864-5, has 550 sittings: the Wesleyan chapel, in the High street, is an edifice of Kentish rag and Bath stone in the Early Geometric style, and has an elegant open turret with spire attached to the principal front: it will seat 800 persons. The Bromley Conservative Club, established March 4th, 1881, in the Market square, was afterwards removed to the mansion known as “ Bromley Lodge,” in the High street, and contains a large reading room, smoking and recreation rooms, with a library of about 200 volumes, and is well supplied with papers and periodicals ; there are now (1890) 700 members : lectures or addresses are delivered and smoking concerts held on every third Tuesday evening during the winter season ; Edward Packe esq. president; Colin J. There is a station here on the London, Chatham and Dover railway, w hich passes under Chatham lines by a tunnel four furlongs in length. It is supplied with water by the Brompton, Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester Water Works Company, and lighted with gas by the Rochester Gas Company. The church of St. Mark is a structure of brick, in the Early English style, and consists of apsidal chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, vestry and a south porch ; the nave is separated from the aisles by arcades of five arches, each supported on round piers with moulded capitals : the chancel arch is inclosed by iron grilles : below it on the south side of the communion table is a credence, with piscina below i t : there are 800 sittings. The register dates from the year 1866. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value ^301, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Gillingham, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Richard Morris, of Trinity College, Dublin. A mission hall in connection with St. Mark’s is now (1890) in course of erection and will seat 350 persons. The Baptist chapel in Green street, erected in 1889, at a cost of ^3,800, is a building of Kentish rag in the Gothic style : the front is flanked by dwarf towers containing the stairs, and there is a traceried window filled with stained glass : under the chapel is a school for 550 children. The Wesleyan chapel, in Canterbury street, was opened in 1882. The Free Methodist chapel in Arden street, opened in 1887, has sittings for about 400, and the Bible Christian chapel in Trafalgar street will seat about 350. The Public Hall, a spacious building suitable for public meetings, was erected in the year 1876 in the High street, and consists of a large hall, well lighted and ventilated and fitted with a balcony and stage ; annexed is a smaller hall, divided by folding doors and arranged so as to deepen the stage for theatrical purposes : the large hall will hold 500 persons. The area is 524 acres ; the population in 1881 was 8,958.
