SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL The school’s annual swimming carnival took on Friday 1st February at The Des Renford Aquatic Centre. An enjoyable day was had by everyone. With a packed programme we still managed to finish the entire carnival on time thanks to the efficiency of the teachers and the cooperation of all students. Special thanks to all the parents who assisted so ably with the various im-portant jobs. A big thank you to the Visch family for their assistance with the tent as well as timekeeping. Thank you also to Susie, Delia and Jane for great timekeeping.

The district team will compete at The Des Renford Swim Centre on Wednesday March 6th and their names will be displayed on the notice board near Year 2 classrooms next week. The swim-ming ribbons will be handed out at our first principal’s assembly.

Principal’s Message

Welcome back to those of you who are returning to Bronte for another year, and a warm welcome to those of you

who are beginning a new learning journey at Bronte Public School. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas holi-

day and are settled into new routines.

The P&C Annual General Meeting for 2019 will be held on Wednesday, February 13th, at 7pm in the Library. Eve-

ryone is welcome! Really! It’s a great way to meet people and share ideas. The Bronte P&C work for the benefit of

the school and its students, organising many fantastic events and activities. So why not get involved? Your partici-

pation is greatly appreciated.

Helen Foster is excited to be back and joins Clare Baptist, Kylie Landrigan, Katrina Black and me in the leadership

team. Kylie Landrigan and Katrina Black will be relieving as Assistant Principals. My old position of Assistant Princi-

pal is going to be advertised at the end of this month. Congratulations to Kate Butson on her new arrival “Juniper”

Kate is currently on maternity leave and will be continuing at Clovelly Public this year. We welcome Adam Smith

who is teaching 3S, he is very excited to be here with us and is also a talented photographer keen to manage our

school twitter account. Welcome back to Lee Peery who is teaching 2P and Michelle Bishop on 5B. Kylie Maunsell is

working with all classes this year to support professional development including, the best use of technology, UR

Strong, differentiated teaching programs and individual student learning goals.

Wearing the Bronte Public School uniform is an honour and an expression of pride in our school. We have a policy

which strongly encourages all students to wear their full school uniform, and it looks great too. Please make sure

you wear your school uniform every day.

Are you an architect? I’d love ideas or suggestions from parents to improve the student bathrooms at Bronte Public

School. Last year’s student satisfaction survey indicated that students would like to see improvements to the toi-

lets at school.

We have made a big change to assemblies this year. Class assemblies are on Friday afternoons at 2pm. Principal’s

assemblies will be moved to the new time of Wednesday morning at 9am. We will have fewer Principal’s assembly

and the band will perform at these. The first assembly is on Friday the 15th at 2pm. ‘Meet the Teacher Nights’ are

coming up soon in week 4 (an invitation is attached). These information sessions provide parents with an overview

of what the year will look like in terms of teaching, learning, themes, and expectations. See you there!

Welcome Back!

Composite Classes

Don't panic if your child is in a composite class this year. They are a far cry from the ones you remember from when you were in

primary school. In fact, grouping different aged children together can be of great benefit.

Most public schools throughout NSW have composite classes. Schools organise their classes this way because of uneven

numbers of students in different years. Bronte PS has composite class, and will always have composite classes, and your child

will most likely be in one once or twice during their time here.

Unfortunately the word ‘composite’ is feared by some parents. This fear however, almost always subsides when they gain a

greater understanding of how the classroom operates.

Teachers look at all classes as composite (even if they are not), with varying ages, gender, maturity and abilities.

A teacher’s emphasis is on the progression of the individual child through logical stages of learning. In every class – including

composite classes – students are assessed to ascertain their current level of learning. The teacher will then design and

implement a program that caters for all students’ needs, while keeping in mind that content in the stage or stages must be

taught.

The most important factor in student success at school is the quality of the teacher.

Assessment data shows that students do not suffer as a result of being in a composite class. In fact there are extra benefits for

students. These include; smaller group teacher instruction when the other grade group is otherwise engaged, developing

independence, a wider choice of friends, and early opportunities for leadership roles.

Is your child happy?

The Department of Education says that “overseas (UK) research has shown children in composite classes do no better or worse

academically than their peers in straight grade classes, but that, socially, their development is enhanced. They are more

confident, can operate better as part of a group, are more assertive, become more independent learners and better problem-

solvers. They also make friends outside of their standard age-groups."

Parents and families welcome this Friday at 2.30

We are welcoming the Year of The Pig at Bronte Public School with a Lion Dance.

This is part of a P&C-led initiative to help bring more cultural awareness to Bronte Public students, and we are fortunate to have a band of Chinese performers visit our school.

The performance will take place on the Top Grass at 2:30 on Friday, and should only go for 30 minutes. It will be a colourful and loud display of acrobatics and drumming to celebrate the New Year.

Ten Tips for Parents of Children Starting School Provide information about your child's immunisation status

Your child will be coming into contact with lots of other children and infections can spread very easily. Immunisation records need to be presented for Kindergarten enrolment. Under the Public Health (Amendment) Act 1992, children who have not been immunised may be sent home during an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease.

Learn the names of the important people at the school Learning the names of staff will help you communicate with your child about their day at school. It is also important that you have a relationship with your child's teacher and principal to ensure you are up to date with your child's progress.

Give all information about your child to the school especially medical and special needs You know your child best. Your child's kindergarten teacher will have many students to get to know. Help the teacher un-derstand your child better and faster by sharing information and insights. This will also ensure that your child gets any es-sential attention.

Provide emergency contact numbers The school might need to contact you urgently. Provide alternative numbers and contacts in case the school is unable to reach you.

Make the school aware of any special family circumstances Any changes to your child's family situation can impact on their emotional and academic well-being. Inform your child's teacher and principal about any changed circumstances so that the child can be supported if necessary. Examples of spe-cial circumstances include the birth of a sibling, divorce or the death of a loved one.

Establish routines with your child and stick to them Prepare your child for a more structured day. Make a daily routine that includes mealtime, talking time, and reading time.

Make sure your child is road/travel safe Children should know to cross the road only at marked crossings. Please set a good example. Take particular care when you drop off and collect your child from school.

Become familiar with school activities - develop a relationship with the school Parents/caregivers set an example. If you are positive and encouraging towards school, your child will be too. Both the students and teachers will appreciate your involvement and assistance in activities ranging from sports and excursions to music and drama presentations.

Educate your child about 'stranger danger' Teach your child not to talk to strangers. They should not accept gifts or lifts from someone that they do not know.

Label equipment and clothing Replacing lost clothing and equipment is expensive and inconvenient. You should clearly mark every item with your child's name.

Bullying Information for Parents and Students

At Bronte Public School we aim to establish a community in which everybody works together and feels valued and

safe, and where individual differences are appreciated, understood and accepted.

Bullying is behaviour that occurs ‘over and over’ when a person; is called names, is threatened, is put-down, is

teased in an unkind way, is ridiculed, has property hidden, damaged, stolen or destroyed, is physically hurt, has

graffiti written about him or her, is left out, is sent hurtful notes, is singled out for unfair treatment, is picked on,

has rumours spread about him or her, and / or is stalked or given dirty looks.

If your child is being bullied; Listen carefully to your child, Assure your child that it is not his/her fault, Get accurate

details, Talk to your child about things they can do if they are bullied, Tell the class teacher about the problem, If

the problem continues seek support from the Assistant Principals and/or the Principal.

If your child is bullying others; initially you will be defensive and unbelieving (this is natural), Find out all the facts

(preferably from the school), Emphasise that bullying is not acceptable in your family, Show your children other

ways to behave, Seek assistance from school or health professionals, Be clear about what will happen if the bully-

ing continues, Reward appropriate behaviour, Listen carefully to your child (something may be worrying your child

and causing the behaviour).

WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU ARE BEING BULLIED

Avoid them. Walk away. Try not to find yourself alone with them. Stay in sight of an adult. Be firm and strong even

if you don’t feel it. Tell them to leave you alone and walk away. Ignore them. Find a friend. Play with friendly chil-

dren. Get help from older students or older brothers and sisters. Go to the Library. Don’t fight back physically. It

just gets you in trouble too. Tell the teacher on duty, your class teacher, the Principal or Assistant Principal. Go to a

trusted friend and seek help. Tell your mum or dad or someone else you trust about what is happening at school.

Talking about a problem is NOT dobbing. We want to make our school safe for everyone.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU SEE SOMEONE ELSE BEING BULLIED

Speak up and let the person doing the bullying know what they are doing is bullying. Refuse to join in with their

bullying and walk away. Support the student who is being bullied to ask for help. Ask a teacher or support person

for help. Reporting what happened can help 'unravel' a situation.

“Bullying is so uncool. We don’t want this at our school.”

“Say stop, never fight, get some help, make it right.”

“Don’t stand by and watch people be mean. Speak up, you can change the scene.”
