Message from Father Pergjini:

“All you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgment, for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal

with us according to the bounty of your mercy.” Daniel 3: 31, 29, 30, 43

This is the entrance antiphon of the 26th Sunday in ordinary time, Sept 30th. It is a very powerful statement that describes very well what happened back then and what is happing today. Last Sunday, Sept 23rd it was the feast day of Saint Padre Pio. A few days before his feast day a full bus from our parish went to the shrine of Saint Padre Pio in Barto, Pennsylvania. Every year in Sept our parish makes a trip to this beautiful and peaceful place. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death and also 100th anniversary of his stigmata. The story of the shrine of Padre Pio in Pennsylvania is very unique. Fifty years ago in Barto, PA a little girl was diagnosed with a kidney cancer. The doctors told her mother that she could die any time, there was no hope for her to recover from that kind of cancer. Her mother, during those tormenting days thinking the death of her dear child, suddenly smelt the smell of roses in her room and a voice telling her to take her terminally sick daughter and go immediately to see Padre Pio in Italy. Amazingly she trusted and took very seriously the unknown and mysterious voice. She took her sick daughter and went to San Giovanni Rotondo, near Foggia, Italy, The first day she joined the huge crowds desperately trying to let Padre Pio see her daughter. Padre Pio very tired and close to his own death could not see them. The next day she insisted saying to the superior that she came from the Unites States and needed to see Padre Pio who mysteriously invited her to bring her daughter to see him. Finally, her request was granted. Padre Pio came in his wheel chair approaching the mother and the little sick girl in her arms. He placed his hands on her head assuring that everything will be fine. Filled with trust and peace they came to back to Pennsylvania. They went to the doctor who noticed that the cancer was gone. A real miracle that science could never explain how it happened. Her parents grateful and thankful to Almighty Father, for this miracle that saved the life of their daughter, through the intercession of Padre Pio, promised to build in Barto, PA a replica of the friary of San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio lived. It is a beautiful and very peaceful place surrounded by the farms. The shrine has many relics of Saint Padre Pio, including one of his gloves used to cover his bleeding hands from his stigmata. Thousands of people come to this shrine begging the intercessions of Padre Pio. Last May, for the first time, we decided to have the confirmation retreat at the Shrine of Padre PIo in Barto, PA. We had two full buses with students soon to be confirmed. I never can forget that our students were touched by listening the life of Saint Padre Pio, his numerous miracles, and the miracle that saved the life of the little girl fifty years ago. The retreat was given by the older sister of the girl who was cured through intercession of Padre Pio. She is an excellent speaker who has the gift to share the story of her sister and touching the hearts of those who carefully listen to her. Padre Pio was a saint who spent hours in confessional, praying, fasting, by locating and counseling people, giving spiritual directions, and above all celebrating Holy Mass with his bleeding hands covered by his glove. He celebrated Holy Mass with great passion and love knowing well the redeeming value of the sacrifice of Christ on the Altar. He used to say that "It would be easier for the world to exist without the sun than without the Holy Mass." And it is very true indeed. Amen! He told the thousands of people who came to see him to pray in silence, to kneel to the feet of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament confiding our needs to Him, to place the confidence in divine Providence, not to have fear but to lift our spirit to the love of Christ. He always insisted and encouraged the faithful to make a good confession and begging Christ’s mercy.

“For we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments. But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.” Yes indeed we have sinned and

many times we have betrayed His commandments. We beg the intercessions of Saint Padre Pio, and take refuge in his saintly wise words:

My past, O Lord, to your mercy; my present, to your love: my future, to your providence. Amen!

Mi pasado, oh Señor, a tu misericordia; mi regalo, a tu amor;

mi futuro, a tu providencia. ¡Amén!

ST. THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS (1873-1897)

St. Thérèse, popularly known as the Little Flower, died at Lisieux on September 30, 1897, at the early age of 24 and was canonized in 1925. Born at Alençon in Normandy, France, Thérèse was the youngest of nine children born to Louis Martin and Zelie-Marie Guerin, but only four girls survived infancy. Marie Frances Thérèse was educated at the Benedictine monastery in Lisieux. After being cured of a serious illness through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1883, she suffered from scrupulosity for a time but made a complete “conversion” in 1886 and tried in vain to enter the Carmel of Lisieux. She even pleaded personally with Pope Leo XIII during a pilgrimage to Rome, but to no avail. She finally succeeded in being admitted at the age of 15 in 1888. She was given the name Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. In 1893 Thérèse was named mistress of novices. In 1896 she had the first attack of tuberculosis, which would lead to her death in 1897. In the meantime the prioress, Mother Agnes of Jesus, a blood sister of Thérèse, commanded her to write her memoirs, which were eventually published

under the title Story of a Soul. In this work Thérèse expounds her doctrine of the “little way” of spiritual childhood and in a very short time it was known throughout the world. She died in 1897, and in 1944 was declared co-patroness of France, together with St. Joan of Arc. She is also co-patroness of the foreign missions, with St. Francis Xavier. In 1997, Pope John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church.

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. You reveal the secrets of your kingdom to those who become like little children. Among them you chose St. Thérèse, hidden in Christ, to proclaim the good news of your merciful love. Your Holy Spirit moved her to make her life a loving

oblation of prayer and self-denial for the salvation of all mankind through Christ and his Church.

ST. BRUNO (1035-1101)

St. Bruno died on this date in 1101 in Calabria, Italy. He was never officially canonized but was included in the liturgy of the Carthusians in 1514 with the verbal permission of Pope Leo X. He was included in the Roman Calendar in 1584, in the Roman liturgy by a decree from the Congregation of Rites in 1622, and Pope Clement X extended the feast to the whole Church in 1674. Born at Cologne, Germany, of a noble family, Bruno Hartenfaust did his preliminary studies in that city and later entered the cathedral school at Rheims, where he became the director of the school. After his ordination to the priesthood he became a canon of the cathedral and chancellor of the archdiocese. He was

described as “an eloquent man, expert in all the arts, and a doctor of doctors.” He was also a strong supporter of Pope Gregory VII in his battle against simony and the low morals of the clergy. After refusing to be bishop of Rheims, Bruno retired in 1082 to a monastery founded by Robert of Molesmes, the reformer of the Cistercian Order. He constructed a hermitage at Langres, France, where he lived a semi-eremitical life with two companions, but later he left that locality and went to Grenoble, where the bishop gave him a solitary place called Chartreuse. That became the cradle of the Carthusian Order, whose members live as hermits in a community setting. Bruno, however, was called to Rome by his former pupil, Pope Urban II, in order to be counselor to the Pope. He left Rome in 1092 because of the election of an anti-pope and went to Calabria in southern Italy, where he founded a charter house of Carthusians. Before his death he made a profession of faith in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, against the heresy of Berengarius. The Carthusian Order is the only one in the history of the Church that has never had a reform, because it never needed one.

Father, you called St. Bruno to serve you in solitude. In answer to his prayers help us to remain faithful to you amid the changes of this world.
