Hattersley offers four basic types ofbronze check valves namely:

■ Horizontal lift check■ Vertical lift check■ Swing check■ Double check

Swing check valves having 6 diametersof straight lengths of pipe upstreamand 3 diameters downstream aresuitable for velocities up to 3metres/second. If the valve is situatedsuch that turbulent flow enters thevalve, the velocity should not exceed2 metres/second.

Horizontal lift check valves areprimarily used for air, gas and steamservices whilst swing check valves are most suitable for water and other liquids.

For air, gas and low pressureapplications, especially where bubbletight closure is required, a valve withrubber faced disk is necessary.

Compressed air service requires ahorizontal lift check valve with anitrile rubber facing on the disk andfitted with a recoil spring.The valveshould always be installed as far awayfrom the compressor as possible.

When selecting valves, reference tocodes of practice and othermandatory specifications should bemade which may preclude certaintypes for specific applications.

Double check valves are designed toprevent contamination of watercaused by back siphonage, back flowand cross connection in supplies suchas those to hose taps, cisterns, standpipes, showers and basins.

Valves, where designated, are WRAS Approved Products and listed in the Water Fittings andMaterials Directory.
