The Brook Street Salary Guide 2018 aims to provide business leaders, recruitment managers and the HR community with a reliable source of business intelligence. To provide insight into the jobs market in each location, we utilised data from the ONS (Office of National Statistics), REC Jobs Outlook and Markit Report on Jobs which provides monthly reports on regional labour markets by KPMG and the REC. Additionally, we created our own surveys – aimed at both UK employers and Brook Street candidates – that focused on timely issues and aspects of employment in the UK.
Our data is further supported through commentary and insights we have acquired through conversations with managers and consultants, CEOs, business owners, HR professionals and line managers within businesses across the UK. We have used these to provide a comprehensive picture of how organisations large and small are weighing up the skills and personal qualities they will want to attract, in order to take advantage of new opportunities and upswings in their respective regions and business sectors.
Methodology
2017 has seen unemployment continue to decrease throughout the year – reaching record breaking levels of 4.3%, the lowest since 1975 and employment increasing from 74.5% to 75.1% since 2016.With unemployment declining employers have looked to increase pay in order to attract the skilled candidates in a noted shortage. This has boosted the income for people on the lowest pay through the increase of the national wage, delivering “the fastest pay rise for the lowest earners in 20 years”*, Employment Minister Damian Hinds commented.
What is the forecast for the 2018 UK labour market?
The record breaking levels of unemployment seen in 2017 will begin to rise for the first time since 2009 to over 5%, according to the EY ITEM Club report. The report also predicts a wage growth of 2.75%, this figure however could be subject to change once the gender pay parity results are published by all companies that employ 250 people or more by the end of April 2018. Brexit, despite not occurring until 25th May 2019, is impacting the UK labour market and the notable decline of overseas talent and caution to UK employment is set to continue throughout the coming year.
The increase of technological innovation such as automation and artificial intelligence entering the workplace introduces a demand for organisations to keep ahead of the technological curve and develop their current talented workforce’s skillset. Organisations must ensure that basic IT processes and digital foundations, such as GDPR compliance, are in place before they can look towards new innovations and become an attractive prospect for candidates – who will still possess the power within the job market. Despite the slight increase in unemployment, employers will still be vying for the attention of skilled candidates that their competitors will be looking to target too. Increases in starting salary, bonuses and non-financial benefits are ways in which organisations can stand apart in their local market.
