Brookside Gardens needs people, and people need Brookside Gardens! But why

do we need a public garden in our County? I, or one, am exceedingly grateul

that Montgomery County has been in ull support o Brookside Gardens since itsopening more than 40 years ago, allowing its residents to reap all the benets

    associated with public gardens.

A public garden is a living museum: a collection o plants that are cultivated

or scientic, educational and ornamental purposes. Brookside Gardens was

established in 1969, not just to create a pretty place (although it is very pretty!),

but to develop a resource or County residents to learn about plants and

gardening and apply what they learned to their own lives, both at home and at

work. People need gardens in their lives. The National Survey on Recreation and

the Environment rom 1999 to 2007 ound that about 66% o all US participants

enjoyed gardening or landscaping or pleasure.

Horticulture is the original green industry; long beore green became a buzz

word, gardeners were growing plants or ood, medicine, and ber, as well as

ornament. Today, a host o new green collar jobs are based on horticulture, like

green roo construction, storm water mitigation, and the renaissance o local ood

markets. Brookside Gardens oers a variety o continuing education programs,

internships at the high school and college level, and meaningul volunteer

opportunities or those interested in pursuing a career in horticulture.

A public garden builds a powerul connection between plants and people, instills

a respect or nature, and the impulse to protect the natural environment. A

well-maintained public garden makes people eel sae and welcome, creates

ownership, and gives residents a sense o pride in their community. Is it

any wonder I am grateul? Not only do I work in the most beautiul place in

Montgomery County, but Im part o a community who understands, appreciates

and supports the value o a public garden in their lives.

    Happy Gardening!

    A

s you may have noticed, the current theme at

Brookside Gardens is Food, a theme that will be

celebrated and explored or the next two years. The

gardens are interspersed with displays that include a

cornucopia o abulous edible plants. Over the past year,

our garden designers have drawn rom their substantial

creative expertise to combine these plants in unique and

beautiul ways, in many cases demonstrating how edibles

might be used as ornamentals. This has been no small eat,

as many edible plants become less attractive in appearance

later in the season, when they channel much o their

energy to producing ruit. What the displays might lack in

oliage and fowers, they make up or in their colorul

    and interesting ruit.

But, you may ask, why is Brookside Gardens

ocusing on ood? Good question! We eel

this is a pivotal moment in our history

when the subject o ood is moving to the

oreront in debates on health, ethics, and

the economy. And o course ood gardening

is as much a part o horticulture as

ornamental gardening. Yet, it is becoming quite

clear that many children and some adults have no

clue as to where the ood they eat comes rom. The more

we understand about the oods we eat and how theyre

grown, the healthier both our bodies and our planet will be.

For a variety o reasons, our culture has moved away rom

at-home ood gardening. However in the current economy,

ood prices are soaring, and people are reconsidering

ood gardening as a money-saving option. There is also a

movement toward living more sustainably in relation to

the environment, which means using ewer chemicals to

produce ood. By growing ones own ood, an individual can

be certain o what has and hasnt been used in production.

And o course, growing your own ood is un! What is more

satisying than eating a juicy red tomato you have grown

yoursel? What is more amazing than seeing a giant green

zucchini develop rom a tiny seed?

But rest assured that growing your own ood is not the only

option! Purchasing and eating local ood can contribute

signicantly to our environment and to our local economy.

By patronizing local armers markets, you are supporting

local growers, many o whom use organic arming

methods. When you buy produce rom a local armer, you

can discover how the crop was produced and whether or

not chemicals were used in its production. The Maryland

Department o Agriculture lists armers markets by county

    on their website, www.mda.state.md.us/md_products/

    armers_market_dir.php.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is another

wonderul option or supporting local armers. CSA arms

sell shares o their harvest, and throughout the growing

season, deliver their crops to predetermined locations

or pick-up by shareholders. As a shareholder,

you will receive whatever is being harvested

that week. This can be both exciting and

challenging, as you may not be amiliar

with some o the produce you will

receive. But ear not! CSAs can be a

    great resource or recipes, especially

or unusual ruits and vegetables. This

is a wonderul opportunity or you and

your amily to try something new. To nd

a local CSA, visit the University o Marylands

Cooperative Extension web page on Maryland

    Agriculture (www.marylandagriculture.ino/category_ino.

    cm?categoryid=46).

And dont orget about community gardens! Montgomery

County Parks opened its rst community garden on park

land in May o 2009. Three more community gardens

have been developed and opened this year. Community

gardens oer an opportunity to grow your own ood when

you do not necessarily have the land on which to garden.

You can garden alongside your neighbors and learn rom

other gardeners as you experiment with your own growing

methods. Contact Ursula Sabia Sukinik at Montgomery

    Parks ([email protected]) to

obtain inormation about community gardens in the Parks.

Since we know you love ood as much as we do, we hope

youll continue to visit and enjoy Food or Thought at

    Brookside Gardens!

    P

lanning or the current Childrens Garden, Nature in

Your Own Backyard, began in spring 2008 when Lynn

Richard, Childrens Program Horticulturist, and Nicky

Beadle, Gardener, met to brainstorm ideas or the new

design. Lynns experience as a childrens educator and

horticulturist and Nickys experience as a garden designer

came together to create one o Brookside Gardens most

popular Childrens Gardens in recent memory. But they

didnt accomplish the abulous results alone. As you will

discover, it takes many people within Brookside Gardens

    and Montgomery County

Parks to bring this kind o

    undertaking to ruition.

    The idea or the garden

    materialized as Lynn and

    Brookside Gardens Director,

    Stephanie Oberle, were

    discussing Marylands

    No Child Let Inside

    initiative, which promotes

    outdoor experiences that

    connect children and

    teens to nature. Both

    Lynn and Stephanie hoped

    to develop a Childrens

    Garden experience that

    would mirror the goals o

    the initiative, encouraging

children to take a closer look

    at nature, with opportunities

or hands-on interaction with natural objects. With this in

mind, Lynn envisioned a natural play area, where children

have the opportunity to use items rom nature, including

sticks, cones, ruits, leaves, and more to create sculptures,

    games, and even make-believe scenarios.

With Brookside Gardens emphasis on sustainability

and green initiatives, a high priority was placed on using

reclaimed materials within the garden. Take a close look

at the tree house (one o the most popular destinations

within the Garden); the side panels are made rom

reclaimed doors. This abulous addition to the Garden

was abricated by Montgomery Parks Lead Carpenters

Doug Castner and Scott Tuttle. The tea table is made rom

a recycled wooden pallet (abricated by Jonathan (Jay)

Morris, Exhibit Technician at the Parks Exhibit Shop). The

tree trunk that has been repurposed into a gnome hut

was provided by Montgomery Parks arborists ater Eugene

Rose, Senior Urban Forester, was put on alert that a special

hollow tree trunk was needed. This previously hazardous

tree will live on to the delight o Brookside Gardens

visitors. Many o the built pieces in the Garden were the

result o design meetings between Lynn, Nicky, and Irven

Harris, Exhibit Supervisor at the Parks Exhibit Shop; Irven

worked closely with the carpentry shop to make the pieces

    a reality.

Brookside Gardens own sta also had a hand in creating

some o the built pieces. Landscape Supervisor Je

Patterson created the tool shed and the raised platorm.

And the beautiul wood encing was built by committee:

Gardeners Bill Dwyer, Jim DeRamus, and Greg Lee; Plant

Curator, Phil Normandy; Je Patterson, and Nicky all

worked to create this unique ence. The wood comes rom

two very invasive plants that are being removed rom

parks: Norway Maple (Acer platynoides) and Bradord Pear

(Pyrus calleryana Bradord). Parks Forest Ecologist, Carole

Bergmann was instrumental in directing our sta to

park land where these trees needed to be removed, and

thereore could be used or this project.

O course, the Garden needs ongoing maintenance both

in terms o the plants and the activities. Nicky and her

volunteers work hard to keep the plants and garden

areas looking their best. Holly Stover, Childrens Program

Assistant, is the orce behind the worm bin (keeping it

well-stocked with red wiggler worms and ood or them

to eat) and the natural play area (continuously stocking it

    with natural items).

Weve been thrilled with the positive response to the

current Childrens Garden (the theme o which changes

every three years). A great deal o thought and work went

into creating the Garden, and it is rewarding to know that

all that work is appreciated by the public, both young and

    old alike.

Green Matters Symposium: Food for Thought

Brookside Gardens held its 7th annual Green Matters

Symposium on February 26, 2010. This years event,

entitled Food or Thought, eatured another great lineup o

speakers, including Anna Lappe, author oDiet or a Hot

    Planet, Jennier Bartley, author o

    Designing the New Kitchen Garden:

    An American Potager Handbook,

    and Nora Pouillon, che/owner o

    Restaurant Nora in Washington,

DC. In keeping with our ood

theme, we elt it was important

    to discuss the burgeoning local

    ood movement and the potential

    impacts o agriculture on climate

change. We also hoped to highlight

the important work o some local,

    passionate advocates who are

    helping to grow this movement,

    like Woody Woodroo, Executive

Director and Founder o Red Wiggler

    Community Farm. Woody was one

    o three speakers who participated

in a panel discussion about ways

to connect to the local community

    through vegetable gardening. The

response to this years symposium was overwhelming

it seems people in Montgomery County are just as

passionate about ood as we are here at Brookside Gardens.

Look or next years Green Matters Symposium, to be

held on February 25, 2011, to tackle another ood-related

theme. Inormation about speakers and registration will be

    available at www.brooksidegreen.org in November.

    Earth Day Festival

Brookside Gardens held its rst annual Earth Day Festival

on April 18, 2010, with an all day celebration recognizing

the 40th anniversary o Earth Day, the driving orce behind

the modern environmental movement. The days events

    began with a volunteer planting

project in the morning the rst

    ever group volunteer planting

    project at Brookside Gardens. About

    40 volunteers teamed up with

    Phil Normandy, Plant Collections

    Manager, and Jared Ashling,

    Volunteer Coordinator/Library

    Horticulturist to plant winterberry

holly and other native shrubs in the

    understory o our 40th Anniversary

    Grove. We also eatured childens

    and amily activities, an exhibitor

    air showcasing ourteen local

    and regional green businesses

    and environmental education

    organizations, and an interactive,

    hands-on activity we called

    tREeCYCLE led by our director,

    Stephanie Oberle, which resulted

in the construction o a colorul

tree sculpture made o recycled materials. Despite some

unseasonably cool weather or mid-April, we had a great

turnout and a very successul event look or the second

annual Earth Day Festival on April 15, 2011.

Planning Board Approves & Combines Master Plan Phases I & II

    I

n March, the Montgomery County Planning Board

unanimously approved the acility plan or Phase II o

Brookside Gardens Master Plan and agreed to combine

both phases I and II into a single project. Currently, the

project is scheduled to break ground in 2013; meanwhile,

Parks sta is working to develop construction drawings

and to secure unding or parts o the project not unded

    under the CIP budget.

The new main entrance design (developed by EDAW, Inc.)

at 1800 Glenallan Avenue includes improved pedestrian

access that will saely allow visitors to enter the Gardens

through an attractive entrance and down a beautiully

landscaped path. A new entry sign eaturing the fower,

leaves and seed pods o the native Magnolia virginiana will

be located on a low, stone wall at the entrance. Once in

the Gardens, visitors who enter on oot will encounter a

wonderul new garden eature: a ginkgo gazebo, which will

serve as a visible and easily accessible meeting place.

Another important eature o the new entrance design

is a gatehouse, which will provide a location where sta

can assist visitors as they enter the Gardens by vehicle.

The design o this structure will be ashioned to resemble

a greenhouse and will include a green roo. Within the

median surrounding the gatehouse a rain garden will be

installed to capture stormwater runo with attractive

    plantings.

Montgomery Parks landscape architect, Ching-Fang Chen

developed a abulous concept plan or the expanded

parking area in ront o the Visitors Center. Her plan

includes a generous amount o green space, while adding

new and appealing eatures to welcome our visitors.

Ching-Fang envisioned a parking area that does not

dominate the visitors experience upon arrival. Instead, a

drop-o area will be visually separated rom the parking

lot by trees, shrubs, and hedging. A new bus parking area

will eature a wooden deck overlooking the Aquatic Garden

and provide a sae point o congregation as visitors board

    and debark buses.

The parking lot itsel will contain a number o striking

eatures, not the least o which will be the trees and shrubs

that will be planted in islands between parking bays.

Pervious paving will be included in an eort to control

stormwater runo rom the parking lot. And rain gardens

will be incorporated into the landscape design to collect

    additional stormwater. Contrasting paving materials

will be utilized in an eort to delineate parking spaces,

driving lanes, and walkways, thus improving

the saety o the lot or both pedestrians

    and drivers.

In public meetings, our constituents were

thrilled with the changes envisioned to

the new Gardens entry, and they provided

    many thoughtul and useul suggestions

or the project. These ideas and others are

being considered in generating a detailed

construction drawing, which we hope will be

    completed by summer o 2011.

The current CIP budget or this project

does not include unding or several items.

These amenities are available as donor

    opportunities or corporations, businesses,

groups, and individuals. Gits o any size will

go toward making this project a success.

    Volunteer Update

    J

    oan ORourke, Brookside Gardens Volunteer

extraordinaire, has been honored with the Maryland

Recreation and Parks Association Community 2010

Volunteer Award. Joan was recognized or her outstanding

service over the last 20 years to Brookside

Gardens and the Department o Parks.

As one o the most ardent and passionate

supporters o the gardens, Joan ounded

the Friends o Brookside Gardens, a

    volunteer organization whose sole

purpose is to support the mission o

Brookside Gardens, and served as the

    organizations president or many years.

Through Joans leadership, the Friends o

    Brookside Gardens began several important

    sponsorship commitments, including

the annual spring and all lectures series,

    horticultural internships, and a major

git o $50,000 to jumpstart the Gardens master plan in

2005. Joan also regularly volunteers with our greenhouse

production team helping to grow crops or our seasonal

    displays.

Despite all o Joans work through the years with the

Friends o Brookside Gardens and her commitment to the

greenhouse production team, her greatest legacy may be

her work with the adult education team. For as long as

most people around here care to remember, Joan has given

her time and expertise to run horticultural workshops or

the public. Each spring and all, Joan plans

and conducts a series o about twelve

    separate container-planting workshops

or a erociously loyal crowd o ollowers

and anyone else who wants to learn to

    beautiy their gardens with seasonal

    containers. Joan plans the workshops,

chooses and orders the plants, works with

our greenhouse team to grow them beore

her workshops, conducts the classes, and

even cleans up the classroom aterwards!

Her programs always sell out and are

wildly successul; because she does all o

this work as a volunteer, the registration

ees go directly to support the gardens

and all o the other educational programs Brookside oers

    throughout the year.

Thank you Joan ORourke, or all that you do!
