You can make some surprising discoveries whengoing on a cosy excursion in the countryside: thefarms sell their own products in farm shops, rightfrom home-made liqueur to lamb specialities,goat cheeses, sausages, and sheepskins. Small art

galleries and original farm cafs sell beautifulart ware such as ceramics, jewellery and hand-

woven materials. Supermarkets, DIY stores, andthe well-known discount stores are to be foundpractically everywhere, often on the outskirts ofthe towns.

Some islands and towns have developed into reg-ular shopping paradises. The island Sylt leaves

little to be desired. In Westerland, Friedrich-strae lures with shops of every price class.Designer articles, brand-name clothes, householdarticles, leisure-time goods and souvenirs inthe pedestrian street you will simply find all thatyou could wish for. There are also lots of possibil-ities when you get hungry: right from ice-creamshops to good fish snack bars and restaurants ofa high quality.

The shopping possibilities in the classy Kampenare high-priced. Here you will find only the veryfinest articles: precious jewellery, clothes fromfamous fashion designers, antiques and worksof art. Fastidious customers will certainly notbe disappointed when shopping in the beautifulFrisian village Keitum. Right behind the beachpromenade in the historical seaside resort ofWyk on the island Fhr you can also get a cosyshopping experience when browsing in the smallshops with maritime arts and crafts or taking astroll in the side streets with the many roses andthe historical Frisian houses.

In the main land the harbour town Husum hasdeveloped into a lively shopping metropolis.Old gabled houses with beautiful facades lieside by side in the narrow streets and cobbledalleys. Along the inner harbour which stretchesright into the centre of the town, cafs and res-taurants invite the visitors to a well-deservedbreak. The large department stores and fashionhouses are situated right at the market square,

and in the narrow alleys of the old town youwill find beautiful small boutiques. A multitudeof maritime souvenir shops are situated at theinner harbour. Beautifully furnished shops andart galleries draw the visitors to the new part ofthe town and to the small shops in Hohle Gasseand Wasserreihe where the poet Theodor Stormonce lived and perhaps also did his shopping.

In Dithmarschen the town Heide with its manyshopping possibilities and the coastal town ofBsum are popular places for excursions. Natu-rally the North Sea spa of Bsum is famous forits Bsum shrimps, but the guests of the towncan also enjoy a large number of family-friendlyleisure-time activities and a maritime atmos-phere. From Bsum you can go on an excursionby boat to the island Helgoland, Germanysonly off-shore island. The island not only boastsscenery of great natural beauty, but at the sametime it is also a genuine shopping paradise: It isthe only place in Germany where it is possible tobuy duty and tax-free.

Culture

The art and culture oers o Schleswig-

Holstein are just as varied and dynamic as

the North Sea coast itsel.

A large number of museums and culture institu-

tions await the visitors. Many exhibitions informabout the North Sea and its nature characteris-tics or give an insight into the history of NorthFrisia and Dithmarschen.

There is even a North Frisian museum which is

world-famous: The Nolde Foundation Seebll inNeukirchen near the Danish border. The exhibi-tions which change each year show the worksof the Expressionist painter Emil Nolde. The

present museum building was built in Bauhausstyle according to the artists own drawings andit was originally his home. The beautiful countrygarden is an oasis of peace and colourful splen-dour and it grows and blossoms to this very dayas in Noldes lifetime.

The central museum of North Frisian County is theNordseeMuseum in Husum. It is situated in theLudwig-Nissen-Haus and shows the full spectrumof culture and nature on the North Sea coast inall its facets. In Schiffahrtsmuseum Nordfrieslandyou will get to know all about shipbuilding and

the shipping and fishing history of North Frisia. Ifyou book in good time, it is also possible to go ona tour in Danish or English with a knowledgeableguide through the enchanting old part of Husum.

The art museum Kunst der Westkste on theisland of Fhr has the sea and the coast as itsoverall theme, and it is housed in a group ofbuildings where it is also possible to visit therestaurant Grethjens Gasthof.

In Bsum there is a totally unusual attraction: the

storm surge world Blanker Hans. Here you cantravel in a rescue capsule through the storm surgeand learn in a fascinating way all about the causeand effect of the natural forces. In an exhibition

you can get more information about weather phe-nomena, climate changes, the tidal water and thehistory of the storm surges and coast protection.The museum Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten issituated in List at the northern tip of the islandSylt and it tells about the special weather condi-tions, the life in the Wadden Sea and the dunes,coast protection and renewable energy. The Stone

Age Park Steinzeitpark Dithmarschen is situatedin Albersdorf far away from the sea. The Archaeo-logical Ecological Centre (AZA) where the Stone

Age comes alive is an exciting and popular placefor an excursion for the whole family.

En rig mangfoldighed af museer og kulturinstitu-

tioner venter de besgende. Mange udstillingerinformerer om Nordsen og den enestendenatur eller giver et indblik i Nordfrieslands ogDithmarschens historie.

Der er endda et nordfrisisk museum, som er ver-densbermt: Nolde Stiftung Seebll i Neu kirchen

tt p den danske grnse. I udstillingerne, somskifter hvert r, vises den ekspressionistiskemaler Emil Noldes vrker. Den nuvrendemuseumsbygning er bygget efter kunstnerensegne tegninger i Bauhausstil og var oprindelighans egen bolig. Den smukke bondehave er enoase af ro og farvepragt, der gror og blomstrerden dag i dag, som den gjorde p Noldes tid.

Det centrale museum for Nordfriesland Amt erNordseeMuseum i Husum. Det befinder sig iLudwig-Nissen-Haus og viser alle facetter af kul-turen og naturen ved Vesterhavskysten. I Schif-fahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland kan man f alt at

vide om skibsbygning og nordfrisisk sfarts- ogfiskerihistorie. Hvis man tilmelder sig i god tid,er det ogs muligt at komme med p en tur meden fagkyndig dansk- eller engelsktalende guide

gennem Husums fortryllende gamle bydel.

Kunstmuseet Kunst der Westkste p Fhrhar som overordnet tema havet og kysten og erindrettet i et museumskompleks, hvor man ogsfinder restauranten Grethjens Gasthof.

I Bsum findes en helt usdvanlig attraktion:stormflodsverdenen Blanker Hans. Her rejser

man i en redningskapsel gennem stormfloden ogstifter p en fascinerende mde bekendtskab mednaturkrfternes rsag og virkning. I en udstil-ling kan man f mere at vide om vejrfnomener,klimaforandringer og tidevandet samt historienom stormfloderne og kystsikringen. I List, lngstmod nord p en Sylt, ligger ErlebniszentrumNaturgewalten, der fortller om de srlige

vejrforhold, livet i vadehavet og i klitterne, kyst-sikring og vedvarende energi. I Albersdorf langtfra havet ligger Steinzeitpark Dithmarschen. Detarkologisk-kologiske center (AZA), hvor sten-alderen bliver vakt til live, er et spndende ogyndet udflugtsml for hele familien.

Naturally the most delicious ingredients come

from this region. A multitude of specialitiesfrom the sea such as eel, plaice and shrimpsare served freshly caught and cooked in end-less variations. A delicacy at the coastis the roll Krabbenbrtchen with

lots of delicious North Sea shrimps.The Sylter Royal is an oyster ofan unrivalled quality which isharvested in Sylt, in Germanysonly oyster farm, and which tit-illates gourmet palates all overEurope. In Germanys only off-shoreisland, Helgoland, Knieper, which isthe claws of the edible crab, is a popu-

lar speciality. A culinary highpoint is the locallamb meat from the North Sea coast of NorthFrisia: succulent, tender and with an unforget-table flavour truly a delicacy. The autumn isthe cabbage season in Dithmarschen: the chefsof the local restaurants fetch the cabbage fresh

from the field and they work their magic byproducing delicious meals, which are cooked inmany sophisticated variations. This should becompleted by the local Dithmarscher Pilsener, a

bitter beer from a private micro breweryin Marne.

And for dessert? Friesian cake with home-made plum pureeand cream absolutely delicious!Especially in the cold season thePharisee is a popular choice. This

delicious coffee drink with a highalcohol percentage topped with cream

was invented on the island of Nordstrand

more than 130 years ago. If you prefer cocoa tocoffee but do not wish to do without the warmingrum, you should order a Tote Tante. All yearround and not only at Easter many people alsoorder an Eiergrog, a hot drink in which the eggyolk is mixed with sugar and rum.

Events

Experiences all year round

The season starts already in February. With thetraditional Biikebrennen (a folk festival withbonfires) the North Frisians in the mainland andin the islands bid farewell to the winter. Thelarge bonfires are said to drive away the spiritsof the winter and afterwards people gather tohave a delicious meal with kale. The biggest his-

torical event in North Germany takes place everytwo years in Heide. Heider Markfrieden offersmediaeval market activities, old handicrafts,stall holders, street performers, and musicians.

The largest town event at the North Sea coastof Schleswig-Holstein is the harbour festivalHusum Hafentage which offers genuine maritimeatmosphere. Around the inner harbour there islive music on various stages, and you should notmiss the large tug-of-war competition. For those

who prefer a somewhat quieter atmosphere, thefestival Friedrichstdter Festtagen would be theobvious choice with lots of stalls, live music andnot the least the Lampioncorso, a large lanternparade of ships along the idyllic canals.

During the North Frisian Lamb Festival, the

woollen dyke dwellers are the main topic of

the event offering a varied programme and

well-tasting lamb specialities. Another culi-

nary highlight takes place in Europes largest

enclosed cabbage area: The cabbage days in

Dithmarschen. The whole of Dithmarschen is

buzzing with excitement when the harvest is

celebrated with delicious cabbage dishes. Dur-

ing the shrimp season in Husum, everything

naturally revolves around the shrimp cutters

and the same goes for the cutter regatta in

Bsum and Friedrichskoog. The enthusiasm

goes wild when the cutters race in the North

Sea and along the harbour quays the visitors

can enjoy the sight of the beautifully decorated

cutters.

The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival is oneof the very large international events. In the

manors, churches and barns it is possible to

experience first-class concerts and artistic

virtuosi. The hottest wishes of jazz lovers are

fulfilled when the festival Jazz goes Fhr is

taking place. In August the event Kunstgriff

is held with 30 exhibitions in the whole of

Dithmarschen during which some 200 artists

show their works.

Along the North Sea coast o Schleswig-Holstein great importance is attached to art

and culture, traditions and customs. Some 300 events with big and small attractions

are taking place in the whole o the area, and all o them are worth-while a visit.

drive vinterens nder, og bagefter samles man tilet velsmagende mltid med grnkl. Nordtysk-lands strste historiske skue finder sted hvertandet r i Heide. Heider Marktfrieden byder pmiddelalderlig markedsaktivitet, gammel hnd-

vrkskunst, teltholdere, gglere og musikanter.Den strste byevent ved Slesvig-Holstens Vester-havskyst er Husums Hafentage, hvor der er rigtigmaritim stemning. Rundt om inderhavnen er derlevende musik p forskellige scener, og man brheller ikke g glip af den store tovtrkningskon-kurrence. Hvis man er til en lidt mere stilfrdigatmosfre, skal man besge FriedrichstdterFesttagen med masser af boder, levende musik

og ikke mindst Lampioncorso, et stort optog afoplyste bde gennem de idylliske kanaler.

Under de nordfrisiske lammedage er det de uldne

digebeboere, der str i centrum og der bydesp et broget program og velsmagende lamme-specialiteter. Et andet kulinarisk hjdepunkt kanopleves i Europas strste indelukkende kldyrk-ningsomrde: Kldagene i Dithmarschen. HeleDithmarschen er p den anden ende, nr hstenfejres med raffinerede klretter. Nr der er reje-dage i Husum, er det selvflgelig rejekutterne,som er midtpunktet og det samme glder, nr

der er kutterregatta i Bsum og Friedrichskoog.Begejstringen vil ingen ende tage, nr kutternesejler om kap p Nordsen, og ved havnekajernekan man nyde synet af de smukt pyntede kuttere.

Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival hrer til dehelt store internationale begivenheder. P her-regrde, i kirker, lader og stalde kan man oplevefrsteklasses koncerter og virtuose kunstnere.Jazzelskere fr opfyldt deres hedeste nsker, nrder er Jazz goes Fhr. It almost goes without saying that the North Seacoast of Schleswig-Holstein is a mecca for watersports enthusiasts as St. Peter-Ording and theisland Sylt are among Germanys best wind andkite surfing areas. Thus it should not come as asurprise that the best wind surfers in the world

meet in Westerland on Sylt in September for theSurf World Cup. In the large party tent on theWesterlnder Promenade there will be plentygoing on.

However, there is also a lot to experience onland. The best international kite surfers demon-strate their abilities along the 12 km long beachin St. Peter-Ording. Breathtaking leaps, extra-ordinary tricks and daredevil manoeuvres fas-cinate thousands of visitors and they can alsoenjoy the fine party programme. Tough duels andhigh-class technical sophistications are the mainingredients when St. Peter-Ording provides the

Men der er ogs meget at opleve p land. Pden 12 km lange strand i St. Peter-Ording viserde bedste internationale kitesurfere deres kun-nen. Vovede spring, usdvanlige tricks og dum-dristige manvrer fascinerer de tusindvis afbesgende som ogs nyder det fine ramme- og

partyprogram. Hrde dueller og tekniske raffine-menter p hjeste niveau er hovedingredienserne,nr St. Peter-Ording lgger sand til de officielle

beachvolleyball-mesterskaber. Siden 1997 har debedste tyske beachvolleyball-spillere begejstrettilskuerne i denne enestende smukke kulisse.En strand-klassiker med garanti for spil, sjov ogspnding.

For lbeentusiaster er det en sportslig udfor-

dring, nr Sylt-lbet afvikles i en lige s flotlandskabelig ramme. Det 33 km lange lb freri marts fra Sylts sydligste by Hrnum tvrs overens klit- og hedelandskaber til List. Og hvis manhar lyst til at lbe endnu mere, kan man gre dettil Helgoland Marathon, hvor man runder enhele fire gange.

Cycling along the North Sea implies a widehorizon, the Wadden Sea, halligen, haubargsand rich march landscapes in the World HeritageSite the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea. Thereis a widely dispersed and excellently signpostednetwork of bicycle paths which, including theNorth Sea Cycle Route, the Border Route and

the North-Ostsee Canal Route.

However, it is also a good idea to get acquaintedwith the splendour of the countryside on foot.

The popular Nordic Walking Parks are situatedin Sylt, in the area around Niebll, in St. Peter-Ording and in Dithmarschen. Golfers can choosebetween 12 golf courses at the North Sea of whichas many as 4 on the island of Sylt. Especially thePoloclub on Sylt is known far beyond the bor-ders of the region. In St. Peter-Ording there are

ideal conditions for beach sailors and kite buggydrivers along the some 12 km-long and 3 km-

wide beach where the wind conditions usuallyproduce a really good speed.

The North Sea coast o Schleswig-Holstein has a lot to oer or

everybody on two wheels both when it comes to sporting bicycle

holidays, cosy day trips, and small tours.

At cykle ved Nordsen er ensbetydende med

en vid horisont, vadehav, halliger, haubarge og

fede marsklandskaber i Verdensnaturarv Vade-

havet. Der er et vidt forgrenet og glimrende

beskiltet cykelstinet, som bl.a. omfatter Nords

Cykelruten, Grnseruten og Nord-Ostseekanal-

ruten.

Det er imidlertid ogs en god id at stifte bekendt-skab med omrdets landskabelige pragt til fods.

De populre Nordic Walking parker findesp Sylt, i omrdet omkring Niebll, i St. Peter-Ording og i Dithmarschen. Til golfspillerne er der12 baner ved Nordsen, heraf hele fire p enSylt. Isr Poloclubben p Sylt er kendt langt udover regionens grnser. I St. Peter-Ording er derideelle forhold for strandsejlere og kite-byggy-krere p den ca. 12 km lange og tre km bredestrand, hvor vindforholdene sdvanligvis giveren rigtig god fart.

when they are on their way from their winterquarters to their breeding areas in the north.

You can also get an intense nature experiencewhen participating in a guided Wadden Sea tour.Thanks to the guides you will get very wiser onthe numerous birds and other big and small crea-tures which live in the Wadden Sea. If you wishto know more about the area, you can participatein the tours which are regularly arranged to theislands, the halligen and the sand hills.

You also have the possibility of getting moreinformation about the Wadden Sea National

Park in Multimar Wattforum where there

are tanks and theme exhibitions about the

whales, the wilderness and the science in the

Wadden Sea.

It is possible to watch the seals on close rangeon the tours arranged by various shippingcompanies, and on the little island of Dne

which is situated right in front of Helgoland. Ifyou prefer to be on firm ground, you can admirethe seals in Westkstenpark in St. Peter-Ordingor in the seal station in Friedrichskoog.

The nature phenomenon which many Danes know under the name o Sort Sol can also

be experienced south o the border on the North Sea coast o Schleswig-Holstein. It is

called so because numerous starlings darken the sun especially in Beltringharder Koog,

in Kattinger Watt and in Speicherkoog when settling down or the night.

Hvis man yderligere har lyst til atudforske omrdet, kan man tage med p de van-dringer til erne, halligerne og sandbankerne,

som regelmssigt arrangeres.Man har ogs mulighed for at f et indblik iVerdensnaturarv Vadehavets mangfoldighed pmultimar wattforum, hvor der er akvarier ogtemaudstillinger om hvaler, vildnis og videnskabi Vadehavet.

Det er muligt at betragte slerne p nrmestehold p de udflugtsture, som arrangeres af for-skellige rederier, og p den lille Dne, som lig-ger lige foran Helgoland. Hvis man foretrkkerat have fast grund under fdderne, kan manbeundre slerne i Westkstenpark i St. Peter-Ording eller p slstationen i Friedrichskoog.

Det naturnomen, som mange danskere kender under navnet Sort sol,

kan ogs opleves syd or grnsen ved den slesvig-holstenske vesterhavskyst.

When you come from Denmark, you cannot missthe North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. You

just follow main road no. 5, which goes from theDanish border at Sd in southern direction alongthe coast and which combines the large townsin North Friesland and Dithmarschen. If you goby train, the train stops for instance in Niebll,Bredstedt, Husum, Friedrichstadt, Heide, Meldorfand St. Michaelisdonn. There is an hourly train

service from Husum to St. Peter-Ording, andthis also goes for the train service from Heideto Bsum. You can also go by auto carrier to theisland of Sylt from Niebll across the Hindenburgdam. There is a car ferry service from Rm toSylt, from Dagebll to Fhr and Amrum and fromNordstrand to Pellworm.

If you come from Norway, you can either take theferry from Kristiansand or Oslo to Hirtshals anddrive across Jutland to the North Sea coast ofSchleswig-Holstein. Or you can take the directferry from Oslo to Kiel. From Kiel you followmotor way 210 and further on to North Friesland

along A7 direction Flensburg to the exit turn atSchleswig. From there you follow main road201 to Husum. You can get to Dithmarschen viaRendsburg and from there along main road 203.

From Sweden you can go by car ferry from Var-berg to Grenaa in Denmark or from Gothenburgto Kiel. You can also choose the direct line viaHelsingborg-Helsingr and Rdby-Puttgarden

on the island Fehmarn. From there you followmain road 202 to Kiel and according to wherethe holiday stay takes place, you drive along A7and B201 to North Friesland or via Rendsburgand B203 to Dithmarschen. You should, however,know that the car ferries quickly get fully bookedin the summertime, and consequently you shouldto book in good time.

Nr man kommer fra Danmark, kan man slet ikkekre forkert. Bilister flger hovedvej 5, der gr fragrnsen ved Sd i nord og sydp langs kysten

og forbinder de strre byer i Nordfriesland ogDithmarschen. Toget standser bl.a. i Niebll,Bredstedt, Husum, Friedrichstadt, Heide, Meldorfog St. Michaelisdonn. Der er timedrift fra Husumtil St. Peter-Ording, og det samme er tilfldetmellem Heide og Bsum. Til Sylt kommer manmed biltoget fra Niebll over Hindenburg-dm-ningen. Der er bilfrger fra Rm til Sylt, fraDagebll til Fhr og Amrum og fra Nordstrandtil Pellworm.

Kommer man fra Norge, tager man enten fr-gen fra Kristiansand eller Oslo til Hirtshals ogkrer gennem Jylland til den slesvig-holstenske

vesterhavskyst. Eller man tager den direkte frgefra Oslo til Kiel. Fra Kiel flger man motorvej 210og videre til Nordfriesland ad A7 i retning mod

Herfra flgerman hovedvej 202 til Kiel og alt efter hvor ferie-opholdet finder sted, krer man ad A7 og B201til Nordfriesland eller via Rendsburg og B203 tilDithmarschen. Vr dog opmrksom p, at omsommeren er bilfrgerne godt fyldt op, s dettilrdes at bestille plads i god tid.
