How Will You Spend Your Spring Break?
Spring break often conjures of thoughts of bikini clad college students having
benders at the beach. In reality though, a good majority of “Spring Breakers” tend to
be families looking for a little fun while the kids are off school. So where can you
head for some family friendly fun this Spring Break?
It’s probably best to avoid certain beaches where the college students tend to flock,
often driving up the costs of hotel and airfare to those destinations. And if you don’t
like crowds and lines, it’s not the best time to visit the nation’s most popular
amusement parks either.
Even still, there are plenty of adventure destinations for families this spring break
just check out a few listed here….
Ski/Snowboard: Spring skiing and snowboarding is a great way to spend your
vacation. The weather is often ideal and sometimes you can even get in on spring
specials as the resorts clamor to boost sales before heading into their off season. And
no matter where you live in the country there is probably an awesome
ski/snowboarding destination not far from you. Check out these ones: Smuggler’s
Notch in Vermont bills itself as the #1 kid friendly resort on the east coast.
(www.Smuggs.com) If you’re in the PNW you can try out the slopes at Mt. Bachelor
in Oregon and see all that its nearby town of Bend has to offer.
(www.MtBachelor.com) In Colorado you’ll find Breckenridge a family friendly option
with a top-notch ski school and a reputation for being more affordable than some of
the more well-known resorts in CO. (www.Breckenridge.com)
Bike/Hike: If you’re looking for some outdoor fun that doesn’t include the white
fluffy stuff a biking/hiking vacation might be your best bet. No matter what part of the
country you hail from, chances are you’re only a stone’s throw away from some
fantastic and active outdoor fun. If you’re looking for adventure on a trail check out
these websites: www.BackRoads.com www.BikeHike.com and www.Trails.com
Family vacations are a great time to relax, reconnect, and revive everyone.
It’s the perfect opportunity to take a break from social media and texting and get
grounded as a family. Whatever you choose to do, I hope your spring break is a great
one!
www.TheBullyProject.com I’m a huge fan of this website that is taking on the ever growing problem of bullying and helping to both educate and support those most high risk at suffering or succumbing to bullying. According to this website over 13 million kids in the US alone will be bullied this year and that is a problem worth solving. This website supplies tools and help for kids, parents and educators in a really fun and intuitive way.
www.NerdWallet.com This website is super cool even if they claim to be like your “nerdy friend” you can trust to always have answers to any of your financial questions. From personal finance, to small business, to credit cards, to investments, to insurance, and paying for education, this site gives you all kinds of unbiased advice. You can even have your questions answered online by advisors. It’s kind of a “one stop shop” for all things finance.
Vinegar Tip
Vinegar to heal bruises... soak a cotton ball
in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise
for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the
blueness and speeds up the healing process.
MARCH
New Light Therapy Preserves Vision Photodynamic therapy involves injecting a light-sensitive medication called verteporfin (Visudyne) into a vein in the arm of a patient with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The drug circulates through the body to the eyes. When a laser is shone into the eyes, the drug is activated and destroys the abnormal blood vessels that cause the loss of central vision in AMD. The procedure is now considered the preferred treatment to slow the progression of AMD and it is covered by most insurance plans. – Sanjay Sharma, MD

March is National Noodle Month! Get Your Slurp On With
This Yummy Noodle Dish…
National noodle month is just too good to not celebrate!
What is your favorite noodle dish? From spaghetti, to
fettuccini Alfredo, to a warm bowl of pho it’s so hard to
choose.
Try this homemade classic that will have your family slurping up noodley goodness
this month! Here is an easy and delicious recipe for homemade chicken noodle
soup:
1 lb. Organic chicken breast 6-8 cups organic chicken broth 4-6 chopped organic carrots ½ chopped white onion 6 cloves of chopped garlic 2-3 chopped organic celery stalks 3-4 sprigs of fresh rosemary 3 sprigs fresh thyme ½ tablespoon sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh black pepper
Put all the ingredients in a crockpot, cover and cook on high for about 7 hours.
Before you serve the soup remove the sprig stems from your fresh herbs. Next, boil
a pot of your favorite noodles until al dente, place them in the bowl and dish the
soup on top. It’s even better when served with homemade biscuits or cornbread.
Tip: You can store the leftover noodles in a separate container from the soup, just
dish the re-heated soup over the cold noodles and they will get warmed by the soup
and be just perfect for a second go-around.

Quotes for March
“In the end it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” – Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the U.S. (He was of Irish-American heritage) “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” - Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the U.S. (Also of Irish-American heritage.) “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy, 25th president of the U.S. (A very famous Irish-American.)

The Idea Corner
March Is Irish-American Heritage Month.
March has been declared the month to honor the
contributions of the Irish-American and their decedents. It’s a
fitting month considering it holds the Irish national holiday
that Americans love to celebrate, St. Patrick’s Day. Here are
some fun ways to honor Irish-American heritage outside the
realm of shamrocks and wearing green.
Rent Far and Away, this 1992 flick starred Tom
Cruise and Nicole Kidman back when they were the reigning
“golden couple” of Hollywood. It’s a good story of Irish-
Americans seeking a better life and land of their own in the
US.
Bake some Irish Soda bread. Nothing beats the
smell of homemade fresh bread and a loaf of Irish Soda Bread
has a mild sweetness. For a good recipe that includes orange
zest and currants, check out the Barefoot Contessa’s Irish
Soda Bread recipe at www.FoodNetwork.com.
And finally, can you really pay homage to the Irish-
American without throwing back a pint or two? Most local
craft breweries will have an Irish influenced beer for March
grab one with a friend, or if you don’t drink alcohol, just grab
and Irish Cream Soda. There really is something for
everyone who wants to celebrate Irish-American heritage.
An Affordable, Easy, And Natural Way To Keep Your Home Free And Clear Of Unwanted Pests
With the changing of the seasons many people often find unwanted
pests entering the home. Be it spiders, flies, ants, roaches, or mice none
of them are creatures most of us want to share any living space with.
But, like our grandmothers always told us, “an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure.” So, before you have these unwanted critters
invading your home, prompting a call to the professionals to clear them
out, there are some simple, easy, and natural things you can do to prevent
them from showing up in the first place.
Did you know many of the most undesirable house pests are
repelled by scents we find very pleasant? Isn’t it funny how it works that
way? For example, peppermint will repel rats and mice, along with
spiders and ants. And, I happen to love the smell of peppermint. Find a
good brand of essential oil and put a few drops into a spray bottle of pure
water and spray your most high risk areas, like base boards, windows,
under the kitchen sink etc. You can even dab some cotton balls with the
peppermint oil and place them discreetly in the back of cabinets and
closets.
Other essential oils that you can apply in the same manner that
keep out the unwanted guests are citronella, lemon, and eucalyptus for
mosquitos. And geranium and lavender are known to keep away the flies
and mosquitos. Lavender has even been known to repel ticks and flies.
You might not want to use all these scents at the same time, but essential
oils really have so much to offer it’s worth looking into. And as a bonus
your home will smell lovely while you keep unwanted pests at bay.
The other tips for keeping out the pests are really rooted in basic
cleanliness. Keeping the home clean and free of crumbs and cleaning up
food spills in the cabinets, and on the floors and carpets (see this month’s
insert or just call me for that) will help keep out many pests. Also,
keeping things away from the outside of the house, where critters like to
live such as woodpiles are a great preventative practice. The experts also
recommend inspecting the house and sealing up gaps in your doors,
windows, and basements.
