As we move into 2013 I would like to think that much of the turmoil seen in the markets in 2012 is behind us. With the last minute resolution of the US “fiscal cliff” issue and more positive news out of Europe we hope the markets will reflect a more positive outlook in 2013. There are many positive signs with which to start the year of 2013!

From LinkAsia Partners’ perspective we look forward to another year of continued support of our clients and channel partners. Even more, we are

looking forward to supporting the launch of some new technologies, applications and solutions throughout Asia Pacific. Some of these solutions will be specifically targeted at the ever more important consumer awareness of food safety and animal welfare.

Adapted solutions that our clients products are focused on include:• Maximizing sow productivity in emerging open stall systems

supported by lignocellulose fibre.• Improving food safety, reducing environmental impact and piglet

productivity through the use of specialized and safe Zinc Oxide sources in Piglet diets.

• Implementation of programs to provide alternatives to antibiotics in animal feeds through the use of probiotics in feed and water.

• Providing 3rd generation feed hygiene technologies for managing salmonella challenges under current animal production systems.

• Prediction and management of SARA (sub acute rumen acidosis) and its impact on milk quality, fertility and productivity in ruminants.

• Specialized products for immune modulation.• Strategies to influence feed intake in piglets, sows and poultry using

peptides in feed and water.

Many of these technologies and applications will be on display during the upcoming VIV Asia in Bangkok in March 2013. At this show, the LinkAsia Partners booth will host the international partners from Agromed (Austria), Animine (France), Biorigin (Brazil), Bluewave (Peru & Ecuador) and Tecnozoo (Italy). Product Spotlight:Opticell® Ruminant: An All-Natural Solution for S.A.R.A.Opticell® Ruminant is a natural lignocellulose product designed for high performing ruminants including dairy cows, goats and beef cattle.

Starch-rich ruminant diets, inadequate mixing or other m a n a g e m e n t i s s u e s c a n dramatically lower  rumen pH with immediate negative effects on milk quality, consistency and volume as well milk fat levels. In the longer term, it may lead to

l a m e n e s s a n d l o s s o f fertility.  This effect is known as SARA ( sub-acu te rumina l acidosis). Currently, the industry practice is to use sodium bicarb to manage the rumen pH with negative consequences in feed intake or sodium elimination, in particular in heat stress periods. The unique ingredients contained in OptiCell® Ruminant naturally influence the degradation of

carbohydrates in the rumen thereby preventing rapid drop in  r u m e n p H . A s O p t i C e l l ® Ruminant is a natural product, there is no negative impact on mi lk or meat qua l i ty and consistency.

The unique mode of action of OptiCell® Ruminant makes this a safe, cost effective and proven tool to protect ruminants from SARA and its resultant economic losses.

Opticell® Ruminant for maximum and safe food production.

smaXtec: A New Tool for Real-time Rumen pH MonitoringWith pressure to increase milk yields, maintain milk consistency while managing changes in feedstuffs, a new tool was introduced at the recent Eurotier that provides real-time monitoring and reporting of the rumen pH. Sudden and even temporary drops in pH may not be detected easily without this new tool.

Now nutritionists and researchers have real-time internet based data to help them make better and faster decisions in terms of feeding management, feedstuff selection, inclusion levels and diet mixing. From smaXtec, this specially designed bolus transmits pH and temperature data to handheld or facility receivers where it is uploaded to the internet for offsite monitoring and alarms.

OptiCell® Ruminant was tested using the smaXtec technology. In SARA sensitive animals, a drop in rumen pH was observed during the control period (yellow area in Figure 1). With OptiCell® ruminant in the diet, the pH was effectively managed.

Application Update:Biorigin and the NEMO projectFor the last four years, Biorigin’s l ead ing β -g lucan p roduct MacroGard® has been the subject of a European Marie Curie ITN project known as NEMO. Researchers in the NEMO pro ject have been investigating the capabilities of b e t a - 1 , 3 / 1 , 6 - g l u c a n , MacroGard® to balance the immune system and i ts application in aquaculture. As the project draws to a close, what has this project meant for Biorigin and the aquaculture industry?

In 2007, Biorigin and 8 other E u ro p e a n p a r t n e r s , b o t h commercial and academic, were awarded a major research and development contract by the European Commission, under Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITN). This contract was for €3million, issued under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) for a project known as ‘NEMO’.

NEMO, whose full title was ‘ T r a i n i n g n e t w o r k o n protective immune modulation in warm water fish by feeding

glucans’, was a 4 year project (2008-2012) to invest igate various aspects of β-glucan activity in fish. Across the partners, 16 researchers were employed. Table 1 summarises the partners and researchers of the NEMO project.

Each partner had its own roles wi th in the NEMO project . MacroGard®, the β-glucan product chosen for research due to its vast documentation and guarantee of bioactivity was provided by Biorigin. Technical information and support was co-ordinated by Managing Director Rolf Nordmo.

With a growing global demand fo r food p ro te in and the i m m e n s e g r o w t h o f t h e aquaculture industry in the last few decades, there has been fresh impetus for the research and development of substances beneficial for fish health and that could help control the frequent d i s e a s e o u t b r e a k s i n aquaculture. β-glucans were a prime candidate for further research.

Those involved in the NEMO project have been investigating MacroGard®’s role and effect on, for example, gene expression, innate phase proteins, cell apoptosis, gut physiology, membranal composition, the i n fl a m m a t o r y r e s p o n s e , b i n d i n g m e c h a n i s m s , neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and wound healing.

Fours years on, as the NEMO project draws to a close, there have been many interesting and exciting new discoveries with regards to MacroGard®.

NEMO has been a very valuable project for Biorigin. Not only has i t g e n e r a t e d f u r t h e r documentation for MacroGard®, supporting it as the most documented β-glucan for use in a n i m a l f e e d , b u t i t h a s highlighted new areas that could b e n e fi t f r o m β - g l u c a n application and kept Biorigin at the fo re f ront o f β -g lucan research.

.

MacroGard® is a pure and natural product derived from baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.Processed by highly advanced and patented techniques, the product has undergone necessary purification giving a high yield of bio-active carbohydrates for inclusion in feeds and premixes. The product is free from material of animal source and GMO free.

Application Update:Biorigin and the NEMO projectThe NEMO project enabled research on a large scale over a relatively short period of time and the dissemination of recent findings across European feed and aquaculture industries.

Biorigin and the NEMO group have attended and participated in many events over the last four years. Key events have included the 15th conference of the European Association of Fish P a t h o l o g i s t s ( E A F P ) i n S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 1 a n d a conference entitled ‘Prebiotics and probiotics in medicine, v e t e r i n a r y s c i e n c e s a n d

aquaculture: the future’ held at Keele University, September 2012.

Many papers have already been published by the NEMO group in highly acclaimed journals, and many more are expected in the near future.

In a broader spectrum, as the knowledge of β-glucans grows, so does the acceptance of their immunomodulating capabilities and their potential as a natural, s u s t a i n a b l e m e t h o d f o r maintaining healthy livestock and increasing productivity. This

could have significant impact in increasing turnover for related industries, enhancing cost-benefit for the end users (farmers) and contributing to meeting growing global food demands.
