November 17 Family Favorites & Thanksgiving

Do you love browsing through cookbooks and trying new recipes? Do you enjoy sam-pling and sharing new dishes? Then grab your apron and sign up for the James V. Brown Cookbook Club! We pick a theme and se-lect several cookbooks, you pick and make a recipe, then we all get together to share the finished products.

Thanks to grant funding from The Harry Plankenhorn Foundation, Inc., the library has created a Quiet Room space, installed a One-Button Studio for video recording, and built a lending library of special toys and books for developmental needs. The first-floor Quiet Room is a space for all abilities full of calming lights, weighted blankets, cozy seats and soothing sounds. The Quiet Room is a place to go for: •A child who needs a break, a moment alone with a parent •A time out to regroup •A quiet, calm, non-threatening space The One-Button Studio, located in the second-floor Teen/Tween area, features a state-of-the-art video recording studio for children with speech disorders. The studio can also be used by the public for school presentations, practicing public speaking and much more. The Special Learner Toy and Book kits available for checkout in the children’s area were selected based on their ability to engage children in sensory play and developmental learning. Toys were selected based on their ability to engage the following skills: Fine Motor Coordination, Gross Motor Coordination, Dramatic Play and Language, Sensory Adaption, Switch-Enabled Play, and Special Needs Adaptive Products.

The library’s “Own-a-Day” program makes the perfect gift. For $100, you can Own-A-Day at the library and have your gift be recognized on the receipts at circulation desks, on the flat screen TVs inside the library, on the library’s home page, and in the library’s email and printed newsletters. This is the perfect way to honor or memorialize someone special, publicize a business, or celebrate a birth-day or anniversary.

“Come Write In” and visit the library during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). NaNoWriMo is held each year in November and encourages people to write 50,000 words and a first draft of a novel.

Library Responds to Community Needs

Teen Program Series The Life Hacks Series, geared for teens age 14 and older in grades 8-12, aims to teach ev-eryday “life hacks” or the life skills necessary to help them get a head start on adulting. “Feed Yourself,” presented by Christine Kavanagh, will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. Participants will learn about healthy food choices and meal preparation. The programs are support-ed with a grant from the Williams-port Lycoming Community Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of PA.

Winter Book Review LuncheonsThe luncheon will start at noon in the Lowry Room of the Welch Family wing of the James V. Brown Library. Those who wish may purchase lunch at noon for $6. To reserve lunch, use the online reservation calendar on the library website ( http://calendar.jvbrown.edu). There you will find a prompt for reservations, or call Dana at the Library at 570-326-0536, ext. 114. Reservations should be made by the Wednesday before the review. (Please note that you only need to register if you wish to reserve lunch.) You may bring your own lunch or simply attend the book review, which will start at 12:30 p.m. Parking is available in the lot off Market Street, adjacent to the Welch Wing.

Dr. Andrew L e i t e r , a s s o c i a t e professor at L y c o m i n g College, will present the Nov. 6 book r e v i e w o n Confederates in the Attic:

Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War (1998) by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tony Horwitz. This nonf ict ion work explores the author’s keen interest in the American Civil War and considers the attitudes people still hold about a 19th-Century conflict – its legacy and its modern implications involving race, sovereignty and historic landscapes. Leiter earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and

joined the Lycoming College faculty in 2005. His research areas are 20th-Century American literature and Southern literature. Leiter is the author of In the Shadow of the Black Beast: African American Masculinity in the Harlem and Southern Renaissances, and he is also the editor for Southerners on Film: Essays on Hollywood Portrayals Since the 1970s.

Invited for a return performance to the Dec. 4 book review luncheon, Henry Hopper will read a section that relates to the Christmas holidays from the

book Act One, the autobiography of the playwright and theater director Moss Hart.

Friends to hold General Membership Meeting

The annual General Membership Meeting of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Lowry Room. New officers and directors of the Friends of the Library will be elected and committees will give annu-al reports. All members of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library are encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

The selected reading emphasizes Hart’s early years and his unusual relationships with a grandfather and an aunt leading up to a poignant Christmas ending. The theme reflects Hopper’s lifelong interest in and sympathies for the struggles of the working class. H o p p e r r e c e i v e d a master’s degree in theology from Princeton Seminary, a bachelor’s degree in history from College of Wooster, and an associate degree in criminology from Villanova. He has worked as a Presbyterian minister, serving churches in Philadelphia and San Francisco, and nearby Jersey Shore. This will be a great opportunity for you to relax over a holiday luncheon and listen to a great storyteller.
