Nelson McCammon National Junior Heifer Show

A long-time Brown Swiss enthusiast and tireless supporter of youth activities, the National Junior Heifer Show is held in honor of Nelson E. McCammon.

McCammon grew up on a diversified dairy farm in southwestern Indiana before attend-ing Purdue University. Following four years of service in the U.S. Army during which he earned a Bronze Star, McCam-mon worked for some of the best Brown Swiss show herds of the time. He traveled the country by box car to state fairs and national shows with the Curtiss Candy Com-pany Dairy in Chicago, CB Farms Brown Swiss in Connecti-cut, and later Wisconsin herds Novic Farm Brown Swiss, Cold Springs Brown Swiss and Red Brae Brown Swiss. He was active in the Wiscon-sin Brown Swiss Association and member of the National Dairy Shrine. McCammon was named winner of the Klussendorf Trophy in 1959 which is the highest honor to a showman exemplifying abil-ity, character, friendliness and sportsmanship.

Always ready to offer a helpful pointer to youth he met on the tanbark trail, McCammons heart was with young people as much as with anything that he did. He never passed up

an opportunity to share his wealth of knowledge about taking care of and preparing cattle for show. Many of the young peo-ple McCammon mentored over the years grew into breeders

of influential cattle and leaders of the state and national association. Mc-Cammons greatest legacy is the Share-A-Heifer program. Having started the program over 20 years ago on his own to replace a defunct program, he purchased the heif-ers and gave them to youth to work with as their project animal. When the

animal reached 2-years-of-age, they would sell it and Mc-Cammon would split the proceeds with the youth.

Nelson donated over $50,0000 to continue his posi-tive influence on dairy youth through the McCammon Youth Heifer Program. This new heifer share program of-fers matching grants, $500 to $1000, to as many as four youth per year for use towards the purchase of a registered Brown Swiss heifer or cow.

It is with great appreciation for his contributions to the Brown Swiss breed that the Wiscon-sin Brown Swiss Associations hosts this show in honor of Nelson E. McCammon.
