BRUCE HOUSTON On the Road Again

March 19 – April 23, 2016

Lora Schlesinger Gallery presents On the Road Again, featuring trucks, assemblages and constructions by Bruce Houston. The show is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. The show is on view March 19, 2016 through April 23, 2016. The opening reception will be Saturday March 19, 2016 from 5 – 7 pm. Since the 1960’s Bruce Houston, a poet of plastic has playfully combined manufactured materials and small throwaways to create unusual and intriguing sculptures. A teller of truths, the marriage of these pieces are often mischievous as they are humorous. Among them are tiny brides and grooms, miniature flamingos, soldiers, toy truck cabs and plastic figurines. Though the objects retain their physical identity, he gives them a new life, forever changing one’s perception of the items. His home has a treasury of raw materials he collects for his assemblages. Although Bruce works with ready-made objects, the trailers of his trucks are hand-cut wood panels shaped to accurately represent the original proportions of the paintings being reproduced. Among them, are iconic paintings by renown artists such as Frank Stella and Piet Mondrian. The result is a body of work that constructs epiphanies using high culture references, plastic toys, and cake decorations. Bruce Houston has exhibited in museums and galleries nationwide including: Neuberger Museum of Art, New York; Addison Gallery of American Art, New Hampshire; Palm Springs Desert Museum, Palms Springs; The Chrysler Museum, Virginia; Allan Stone Gallery, New York; Gracie Mansion Gallery, New York; and Louis Stern Gallery, Beverly Hills. His work is also in prominent collections such as the Smithsonian Art Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Mondrian Foundation, the Netherlands.
