JUNK
“To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” — Thomas Edison
JUNK tells the story of a modern-day boy finding himself in an abandoned junkyard inhabited by the spirits of children from the 1940s. They teach him to play, trust, invent and take risks.
JUNK responds to the creative question “in 2018 do we over supervise our children? Are we creating a generation denied the opportunity to take risks, find their boundaries and exercise their imagination?”
JUNK is reminiscent of a time when children created their own fun, when they played outside from dusk to dawn,
THE SHOW
climbing trees, jumping off roofs, hanging off the hills hoist and discovering that their imagination could take them anywhere they wanted to go. This work will take audiences on a journey back in time, before children had access to televisions, computers and expensive toys, when the neighborhood street was a playground full of adventure and make-believe.
Our young artists undertook research with local elders, collecting their stories into childhood play in regional Australia during the 1940s. These became the inspiration to create JUNK, a beautiful intergenerational exchange that has been a privilege to create within.

THE FLYING FRUIT FLY CIRCUS is one of the world’s leading youth arts companies, both a celebrated producer of contemporary circus-based theatre for young people and a national centre of arts training excellence, catering primarily for young people from age 8 to 18.
Based in Albury-Wodonga, the company delivers a world famous circus program and complementary academic program, providing elite-level technical skills and artistic learning for young people who have the dedication and attributes to become professional, industry-ready circus performers.
The company has many ground-breaking achievements to its name
including the Nanjing Projects with China’s Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe and collaborations with the Moscow Circus. In 2015 the Flying Fruit Fly Circus continued the legacy with landmark partnerships with Sydney Opera House, the Vietnam School of Circus and Vaudeville in Hanoi and collaborations with other notable organisations and artists.
In 2014, the company’s 35th year, its hit show Circus Under My Bed performed triumphantly at Sydney Opera House and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, while another major production Control Alt Delete was on tour to 12 towns and cities around the nation. In 2015 the Flying Fruit Fly Circus returned to
the Sydney Opera House with Circus Under My Bed by popular demand and performed seasons in Albury, Canberra and internationally in Istanbul as part of the Australia in Turkey Festival. The company’s most recent production JUNK premiered at the Cube Wodonga in 2016 before performing at the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne to sold-out audiences.
Seeing the young artists of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus perform live is like no other experience on the Australian stage.
The Company is a registered charitable foundation.
