Brunch with Standards Gurus!A great deal of work goes into the development of standards that

are applicable to the graphic arts industry. But once these standards are accepted, not everyone agrees on which are most

important, how they are best implemented—or whether they even need to be implemented. In this lively panel discussion,

Don Schroeder will host a lively panel of distinguished standards gurus where they will discuss today’s trends,

technologies, and standards development, and how it will affect color management in the future.

Standards and Why they are Important§ Today, companies are facing fundamental changes in the way they

must do business.

§ As we continue to move toward a global economy, standardization issues continue to grow more complex.

§ As more international trade agreements are implemented, domestic manufacturers will face growing competition from international concerns.

§ Standards are documented consensus agreements

§ In many cases, they provide uniformity which allows worldwide acceptance and application of a product or material.

§ Standards help to remove technical barriers to trade, leading to new markets and economic growth for the industry.

§ Today, standards are recognized as being essential to helping companies be innovative, reduce costs, improve quality and maintain competitiveness in an international marketplace.

Standards and Why they are Important§ Standardization provides a way to help shrink barriers to trade.

§ Standards for the printing, publishing, and converting industry will enable processes to run faster, more predictably, more efficiently, and be more cost effective

§ Providing uniform, defined procedures and tools which help users produce quality products for their customers;

§ Facilitating interconnectivity and process integration among systems

§ Allowing users to communicate with one another easily

§ Enhancing product quality and reliability at a fair and reasonable price

§ Increasing distribution efficiency and ease of maintenance; and improving health, safety and environmental protection, and reduction of waste.

§ Many more….....

ISO TC130 Graphic TechnologyNew Scope

§ This field covers all phases of the process, where graphic elements (image, text, line art, pattern and others) are created, manipulated, assembled, communicated, and finally delivered electronically as digital products or physically to substrates using inks, toners and other marking or functional materials, and finished as demanded by the end applications.

So let’s start here with our panel of Gurus….

§ International Standards

§ ISO Technical Committee 130, Graphic Technology (ISO TC 130)

§ ISO TC 130, Graphic Technology, is the committee within ISO that has responsibility for international graphic technology (printing and publishing) industry standards. Its Secretariat is Standardization Administration of China (SAC). The current listing of TC 130 working groups

So let’s start here with our panel of Gurus….Topics to consider§ Relate some real world experiences where standards either new or old have impacted your calls on users and customers

§ How has the standards helped or hindered your discussions with Print Buyers and or Brand owners

§ What are the misconceptions they have on standards?

§ ISO/TC 130 resolves, at the request of WG 3, to change the title of ISO/PWI 21328 from "Graphic technology – Standard ink set for multi-colour printing" to "Graphic technology – Requirements for multi-colour printing”.

§ ISO/TC 130 resolves, at the request of WG 3, to delete ISO/CD 12647-2 Amd 1 "Graphic technology – Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proof and production prints – Part 2: Offset lithographic processes – Amendment 1”. To be a call to action for the US (and Canada!) Print communities – we need to get out ahead of what we want the next version of 12647-2 to be, which includes how to deal with paper brighteners more intelligently.

§ ISO/TC 130 resolves, at the request of WG 3, to initiate work at stage 30.00 (CD) to revise ISO 12647-6 "Graphic technology – Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proofs and production prints – Part 6: Flexographic printing”. The scope of ISO 12647-6:2012 will not be changed by the revision. Target dates: Default timeframe (36 months). The proposed project leader is Steve Smiley.

§ ISO/TC 130 resolves, at the request of WG 3, to change the title of ISO/TS 15311 series from "Graphic technology – Requirements for printed matter for commercial and industrial production" to "Graphic technology – Print quality requirements for printed matter”.

§ ISO/TC 130 resolves, at the request of WG 4, to add a preliminary work item (PWI) for the development of an international standard entitled "Graphic Technology – Ink opacity”.

§ ISO 15311-2 to , Graphic Technology — Print quality requirements for printed matter—Part 2: Commercial print applications utilizing digital printing technologies Please note: the US objected to this title change at the last WG3 meeting in Indonesia.
