1. CERTIFICATION
ALL coaches in Brunswick Cal Ripken must complete the Cal Ripken certification course/exam online or regular mail.
WHO: All Cal Ripken Coaches heads and assistants
WHAT: Coach Certification WHERE: Go to http://www.ripkencoaching.org. Online course and exam will take about 2 hours.
WHY: REQUIRED BY Cal Ripken National rules.
COST: $20. Brunswick Cal Ripken will reimburse you for the cost if you are coaching in the league this year. Submit a copy
of the receipt and the league will reimburse you.
ALL Coaches are subject to a background search which MUST be submitted/passed prior to the start of the season.
• Per Cal Ripken National rules, the BG check must be renewed every two years.
New for 2019: Cal Ripken requires Abuse Prevention training for all coaches, also to be renewed every two years.
Please see the document center for the PDF instructions for both Background Checks and Abuse Prevention Training
Derek Hewson is the Coaches Coordinator; he can be reached at: [email protected]
2. INCLEMENT WEATHER CANCELLATION POLICY/ PROCEEDURES:
• NOTIFICATION - In the event of rainout cancellations a notice may be posted on the league website
http://brunswickcalripken.website.siplay.com/. Team Managers/coaches are responsible for checking
the league website and Managers are responsible for contacting all of the players on their team. The
league President or designee will do their best to send an email to the managers in the event of a rain
out. If a manager/coach does not have e-mail or internet access they will have to make a special request
to the league president to be contacted by phone. Because we are using the Town of Brunswick’s fields,
the decision to cancel games is made by the Brunswick Recreation Center personnel. On weekdays the
decision will be made by 3pm, on the weekends ASAP. Please do not call the Recreation Center; the
league will send you an email. Decisions to cancel are final and games absolutely will not be reinstated
if the weather clears.
SEVERE WEATHER PROCEDURES In the case of a severe weather warning, the ranking league official
should notify all participants, spectators and staff and be alert for lightning, hail or heavy rains. At the
first sign of thunder and/or lightning the area will be cleared immediately. If after 30 minutes there has
not been any additional thunder and/or lightning the facility may be reopened and play may be resumed.
It is important to wait the full 30 minutes. If the thunder and lightning continues the area will remain
closed until the storm clears. Again, it is important to wait 30 minutes after hearing the last thunder roll
or seeing the last flash of lightning. There may be instances when a storm moves into the area rather
rapidly and without much warning. In this case the ranking official may need to take appropriate and
immediate action to clear the area. The league will do its very best to reschedule any/all games
cancelled for inclement weather but the league President has the authority to decide whether a game will
be rescheduled or not on a case by case basis. The league Scheduling Coordinator: Chris Fallis, email:
[email protected] will be responsible for contacting team managers about reschedule dates and
times.
RESCHEDULING GAMES CANCELLED FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER: The league will do its very best to
reschedule any/all games cancelled for inclement weather but the league President has the authority to
decide whether a game will be rescheduled or not on a case by case basis. The league Scheduling
Coordinator: Chris Fallis, email: [email protected] or Brian Rapoza, email
[email protected] will be responsible for contacting team managers about reschedule dates and times.
4. RESCHEDULING REQUEST – (other than weather)
If a problem arises during the regular season where a team will not have enough players due to a school
function or some other reason, please contact the opposing coaches and Scheduling Coordinator: Softball: Matt
Cassidy, email: [email protected] or Baseball: Chris Fallis, email: [email protected]. The
two coaches can request a game be rescheduled and in most cases we will reschedule that game at a later date
but the league President has the authority to decide whether a game will be rescheduled or not on a case by
case basis.
5. BAT SAFETY
Safety with bats is a real concern; please stress this issue with players and parents. Players should only pick up
a bat if they have a batting helmet on. There should be a coach or parent volunteer to help supervise the on-
deck circle during games. Please only one player in the on-deck circle at any time and they must be wearing a
helmet.
6. SCOREBOOKS
Scorebooks must be filled out & accurate (AA, AAA, Minor, Major divisions only). Try
and have a parent keep the book for you. Help them identify “real hits” vs. reaching base on errors. We may be
using these books to help us select All-Star players and to complete evaluations at the end of the season.
7. ROSTER/BATTING LINE-UP CARDS
Managers need to give a written roster/batting lineup to the opposing team prior to the start of the game
8. NEWS RELEASES
News releases for Rookies, A, AA, AAA, and Major league divisions: The manager of the home team is
responsible for sending in game results to the Times Record during the course of the season. We want all kids to
be recognized at least once during the season. Try and list the score and hitting, fielding and pitching stars of both
teams. You can email the results to [email protected].
9. PRACTICES
Practices can start as soon as the fields are ready for play. A schedule will be established with the scheduling
coordinator: Chris Fallis, email: [email protected]. Most teams practice once a week.
10. EQUIPMENT
The league will supply each coach with equipment including: jerseys, socks, hats, softballs and baseballs (type
specific to division), bats, catcher’s equipment, batting helmets and scorebook. The coach is responsible for
picking up equipment at the designated facility and time and turning in equipment at the designated facility. If
you cannot make the designated times, contact the equipment coordinator or your division coordinator to arrange
a special time.
Brunswick Cal Ripken
League Structure, Goals & Expectations A/8U DIVISION
AA, AAA/10U DIVISION
MAJORS DIVISION
Rookie Softball and A Baseball
The emphasis of these divisions is on fun. We are introducing most players to the great games of softball and
baseball. We need to make the game fun, safe and interesting to all players. To accomplish these goals, players
will be equipped with smaller, properly sized equipment. After assuring player safety, the primary role of the
coaching staff is to keep play moving along. From a developmental point of view, 6, 7, and 8 year old boys and
girls need to remain engaged mentally to have a sense of fun. This is accomplished by the joint effort of the
coaches of both teams. For example, the time to teach swing mechanics is at practice or on the sideline, not in
the batter’s box during the game.
This is “non-traditional” baseball and softball. All players on defense and hitting through the entire roster are
examples of our non-traditional approach. We also allow defensive coaches to assist players in the field and to
provide reminders in game situations. We want our rookie players to be able to throw straight, catch the ball and
make consistent bat-to-ball contact when they move on to the next level of play. More importantly, we want the
players to have fun and sign up for many years to come. Players develop at different times of their lives and this
is especially apparent in these games with their exacting skills. It is important to have late bloomers still playing
the game when break through occurs and it all comes together for the player.
AA and AAA Baseball and Minor Softball
AA and AAA Baseball is recommended for 8, 9, 10, and 11 year olds and Minor Softball is recommended for 9
and 10 year olds. While the softball league and AAA Baseball will travel to play against local area leagues
(mainly due to the amount of softball teams in the area), the AA baseball league is a House League that matches
teammates of their own age and experience level. Players continue to build and refine their fundamental skills
while they begin to understand game strategy. It is at these levels that players first experience post-season
tournament play, with district, state and regional levels of play. Players are also eligible for the All Star season
at their own age level.
Major League Division Baseball and Major Softball
The most experienced level of Cal Ripken Softball and Baseball, recommended for the most skilled 10, 11, and
12 year old players. The Majors Softball and Majors Baseball divisions offer players the highest level of
competition with games played against local area teams. Players are eligible for postseason and tournament
play as well as the All-Star team at their age level.
The Cal Ripken rulebook will be followed with these exceptions or points of emphasis:
RULES
All Divisions:
1. Sportsmanship
a. Unsportsmanlike conduct and dangerous play cannot and will not be tolerated from players, coaches, or
spectators. First offenses will result in a warning to the offending team. Subsequent events can/will result in
out calls or ejection. All incidents of this nature will be reported to the League Coordinator as soon as
possible. The League coordinator will investigate and report all finding back to the executive Board of the
League.
2. Player Safety
a. Batters must wear batting helmets – with face masks, except when they have their own helmets (AA,
AAA, Minor Softball or Majors Baseball/ Majors Softball players cannot share personal helmets) - in
the on-deck circle and continue to wear them until they return to the bench. A team will be warned if a
player removes their helmet on the playing field. Outs will be issued after the first warning.
b. A thrown bat will result in a team warning as well. The next player to throw a bat will be declared out
and play ruled dead immediately.
c. All coaches are expected to police their own team and issue warnings and out calls associated with rules
2a and 2b. d. Protective cups: Different requirements for the three divisions:
• Rookies/A: required when players are catching - no exceptions. A catcher may use his/her own glove
to catch.
• AA and AAA: required when players are catching – no exceptions. The league strongly recommends
all players to wear a cup in the field as well. A catcher may use his/her own glove to catch.
• Majors: required when players are catching – no exceptions. The league strongly recommends all
players to wear a cup in the field as well. A catcher’s glove must be used.
e. Metal cleats are prohibited; rubber cleats are recommended but not required.
f. SOFTBALL: All players in the position of pitcher, 1st base and 3rd base must wear a safety mask during
all practices and games.
3. Forfeits
a. There are no forfeits for number of players available. Other registered players in same age group may be
used if less than 8 players are available. You are NOT allowed to use non-registered players for
insurance purposes.
4. Pitching ( AAA and Majors Baseball ONLY)
a. Cal Ripken rules indicate a maximum of 6 innings pitched in a calendar week (Mon-Sun). One pitch is
considered an inning. b. All players wanting to pitch must be given the opportunity at the coaches’ discretion.
c. Please refer to specific pitching guidelines for AA, AAA and Majors under their respective division
rules.
SPECIFIC RULES
ROOKIE SOFTBALL DIVISIONS
1. Game Length
a. Each game will consist of 6 full innings or 90 minutes from the scheduled start time, whichever
comes first. A full inning cannot be started after 1hr20mins. Score is not kept.
2. Game Management
a. All players will have equal playing time.
b. All players will be placed on defense. If more than 9, extra players will play in the outfield.

some positions that not every child will play (1B, P, C).
e. All players will be in a batting order at the start of the season that continues into each subsequent
game. The on-deck players at the end of the game will lead off the next game.
f. In the first scheduled week of play we will bat through the lineup regardless of outs made. After the
first week all players will bat each inning unless 3 outs are recorded.
g. The defensive coaches will act at field umpires and home plate umpire.
3. Game Rules
a. Pitching will be done by a coach of the team at bat.
b. Balls and strikes are not recorded. There are no walks. There is a five pitch count for each batter,
after they can option for a hitting tee. After the seven pitch count, the batter must use the tee. It is
important to avoid lengthy at bats, the game must be kept moving along so all players can stay
mentally in the game. c. We do not allow a live on deck circle in A. Only the batter should have a bat.
d. All overthrows result in a one base award from their position at the time of the overthrow.
e. Runners cannot advance on passed balls, wild pitches or by stealing.
f. There is no head first sliding into any base. If a child is caught sliding head first it is an automatic
out.
g. There is NO bunting.
SPECIFIC RULES
“Single A” BASEBALL DIVISION
Umpires:
a. The offensive coach will act as plate umpire.
b. The defensive coach(es) will load the pitching machine and act as the field/bases umpire.
Pitching: Coach pitch or Spring-loaded portable pitching machine
a. Spring-loaded portable pitching machine – Speed: 30-40 MPH. The speed is established when
ball crosses home plate. The front two legs of the pitching machine are placed in front of the
pitching rubber.
b. The player that assumes the pitcher’s position must remain within the radius circle, behind the
machine, and on one side or the other, until the ball is hit.
c. The catcher takes the normal position in full gear. Catcher catches the ball – gives the ball to
the plate umpire/offensive coach – the umpire/offensive coach puts the ball in the bucket – the
catcher DOES NOT throw the ball back to the player/pitcher on the field.
Fielding:
a. Teams will play with 6-10 defensive players in the field. If there are more than 11 players on a
team, no player can sit for more than 1 inning per game.
b. All players will have equal playing time.
c. Teams will rotate defensive placement at infield and outfield positions for each player in
every game. For safety reasons, there may be some positions that not every child will play (P,
C, 1B).
d. There will be 4 outfielders: LF, LC, RC, RF. All outfielders must be positioned on the outfield
grass. They may not be positioned on the infield at any time.
e. Free substitutions of players.
f. If a thrown ball hits any part of the pitching machine, it is a live ball.
g. When a ball hit to the outfield is returned to the infield, and the infielder has possession,
runners can no longer advance without peril. If the runner is more then half way then he may
advance to the next base at his own peril. If in the umpire's/defensive coach's judgment the
runner is less then halfway then the runner must return to the nearest base.
h. On an infield overthrow the runner can advance one base at his own peril. Once a fielder has
possession, runners can no longer advance without peril. If the runner is more than half way,
then he may advance to the next base at his own peril. If in the umpire's/defensive coach's
judgment the runner is less then halfway then the runner must return to the nearest base.
Batting:
a. The batting order is set as of the first game for the season. Alphabetical order is suggested.
b. A continuous, cascading batting order will be used. The player on-deck at the end of the game
will lead off the next game.

base.
d. Each batter receives a maximum of four (4) pitches. If the batter strikes out, or if the ball has
not been hit into play after four pitches, the batter is out. If in the umpire’s judgment the
machine / coach delivers a ball out of the strike zone, a “no pitch” will be called unless the
batter swings, in which case it will be called a strike.
e. If the batter fouls the fourth (4th) pitch, the batter will receive additional pitches as long as the
batter continues to foul pitches. The batter is out if a batter swings on a third strike and misses
the ball.
f. A batter may choose to use a tee but must do so at the start of his/her at bat. Use of the tee is
for player development and is available for the first 3 games of the season only. After the 3rd
game of the season, all players will use the pitching machine / coach pitch.
g. If a batted fair ball hits any part of the pitching machine, without touching any defensive
player, the ball is immediately dead. The batter will be awarded first base. All other runners
return to the base they last occupied before the ball was hit, unless forced to advance as a result
of the batter being awarded first base. If a batted fair ball is first touched by a defensive player
and then hits any part of the pitching machine, it is a live ball.
h. No intentional walks.
i. BASEBALL ONLY - All bats need to have the “USA Baseball” stamp on them. This is
required for practice or game use.

PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS PROCEDURE/ POLICY
In any organization there are bound to be some issues and some cause for complaint. Initial problems should be
discussed and hopefully resolved between the involved parties (coaches, players, parents). Contact your coach
once the game and post game activities are concluded and discuss your concern. If the problem still remains
unresolved, the Division Coordinator should be notified and he or she will attempt to provide a solution.
If this is still unsatisfactory to the involved parties, they may submit a written grievance stating the specific
problem to the President of the league. The President may schedule a meeting with representatives of the Cal
Ripken Board and the involved parties to consider the grievance and resolve the problem.
Problems or complaints about the Umpires shall not be discussed with the Umpires for any reason at any time.
This rule is in place to prevent any conflict between Umpires and coaches, spectators or parents. There are no
exceptions to this rule. The expectation is as a coach, player, parent or spectator you will comply with this rule
and respect that the Umpire is the authority on the field. Anytime you have a concern about an Umpire you
should communicate with your Coach and/or your Division Coordinator. The Division Coordinator will contact
the Umpire Coordinator who will in turn investigate and report back to the coach or the person who had the
complaint.
CONDUCT POLICY
For instances of egregious behavior, for example racial comments, personal taunts, destructive behavior, etc, the
Board will institute a one-time warning for behavior correction. If the behavior continues, the parties involved
will be expelled from the current season. As guiding influences for many of the players in the league, the Board
views these instances as learning experiences and as a time to set the players on the correct path and to keep
them involved in youth sports.
Parents Meeting
Brunswick Cal Ripken strongly recommends that each team have a parent meeting at the start of the season. This
is a great opportunity for the parents to meet and get to know the coaching staff. It is also the best time for the
managers to disseminate information on the season, the league and the responsibilities of the parents. The
following is information to share at the meeting. This meeting can also take place at the same time that uniforms
are distributed.
b. Please advise all parents that the league provides the jersey, hat and socks. These are to be worn at games
only. It is NOT to be worn for play, school or practices until after the season ends. Please have them wear
their team hats to all games, not all-star hats or non-team hats. The league spends over $1,000 a year to upgrade
and replace uniforms, please stress to take proper care of them. The players will keep the jersey, socks and
hats. Parents please do not attempt to iron the jerseys; it will melt the screen print!
c. Cleats are recommended, but not required; metal cleats are prohibited.
d. The league strongly recommends the use of protective cups and athletic supporters. All catchers MUST wear
a protective cup in order to catch.
e. Batting helmets must be worn during all practices and games by the players hitting, on-deck and ALL base
runners. Helmets with facemasks are required in both A & Rookies and for all players in Minors Softball, AA,
AAA, and Majors without their own helmets.
f. Distribute a team roster to all parents; this helps with car-pooling and phone trees if needed.
g. Explain that the parents are responsible for their children at games and practices. If they cannot stay for an
activity they should make arrangements for another parent to cover them in the event of an emergency,
shortened game or practice.
h. Players should be at all practices and games. This is important as a “team” player and for players to learn
responsibility related to team play. If they will not be able to attend a game or practice, they should notify the
team manager as early as possible.
i. Stress to parents and players the concern of potential injury from bats. No bats are to be handled unless the
player is on-deck and wearing a helmet. No bats are to be handled on the bench. Only one player in the on-
deck circle at a time!
j. Request that if a parent or player has a problem with the way things are being handled to notify the manager
as soon as possible, never prior to a game. We do not want the players to have a negative experience if we
can help it. We can also deal better with problems if you hear them directly from you and not through the
“grape vine”.
k. PARKING: if you are practicing at the Knights of Columbus field, you are NOT allowed to park in the Knights
parking lot, you must park in the lot to the left as you pull in. The space is marked and it’s a short
walk to the field. When playing at the SMCC field, park only in the paved lot near the college past the
outfield, NOT on the grass.
l. Ask for volunteers. Even though they may have checked off on the registration form that they will help, ask
again – you will need help:
• coaching the bases
• scorekeeping
• team parent to help with picture day and concessions
• a bench &/or on-deck coach
m. Explain the rainout procedure; the responsibility to notify your parents belongs with you. Set up an e-mail
distribution list, set up a phone tree system, or parents can check our web site.
n. Players should bring a personal water bottle to each practice and game.
o. Players should try and eat prior to the game, food is not allowed in the bench area except for sunflower seeds
(no spitting).
p. Get the information about picture day out to your parents: date, time and location. It is important that ALL
team members are present even though they might not be purchasing photos.
q. The manning of the snack shack will be the responsibility of the home team on “A” field at Lishness Field. A
board member will be responsible for opening and closing. All procedures will be posted inside the snack
shack. Volunteers must be at least high school age to work, no one other than the workers are permitted inside.
