STUDENT ACTIVITY NEWS

BHS Players Present A Midsummer Night’s Dream On Thursday, Friday and Saturday November 20, 21, and 22 at 7PM in Crooker Theater the Brunswick High School Players will present their fall production of William Shakespeare’s most delightful comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Not sure you like Shakespeare? This production will change your mind! While Midsummer”s plot about four star crossed lovers who meet in the woods only to be tricked by the fairies and hobgoblins who dwell there is zany enough, BHS Players’ production takes the zaniness to a whole new level. Through the use of plenty of physical comedy and the silliest of props ( rubber chickens anyone?) the Players have mounted a production in the full, true spirit of Shakespeare’s intention- to make his audiences laugh. Add to this an incredible set design executed by Mr. Clark and his wood shop class, consisting of huge, brightly lit trees and an overhanging moving canopy of leaves for the forest and you get an unforgettable, hilarious, and most enchanting production. So before you write off Mr. Shakespeare, come to see BHS Players’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All shows begin at 7PM with an additional matinee performance on November 22nd at 2PM. Tickets are $8.00 for students and senior citizens and $10.00 for adults and can be purchased at the door. Don’t miss it!!

YEARBOOK Students and parents may submit photos of BHS students directly to the Dragons Spirit Yearbook data bank online by visiting www.replayit.com. All you have to do is create an account and use the school code : dragons. School clubs, organizations, extra curricular activities and sports are areas where photographs are needed. Yearbooks may still be purchased at BHS and online at www.jostensyearbooks.com. For more information on yearbook please visit the BHS yearbook website. Yearbook needs staff members for the winter season. Meetings are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and staff need to attend one day per week. Interested students should see Mrs. Driscoll to become involved in this fun club and learn about layout design.

In order to provide a quick and easy way for students increase their English vocabulary, Mrs. Lienau is using Twitter. Follow @magistrajane , where Mrs. Lienau will tweet a new word every weekday, defined and used in a sentence. You’ll find these words helpful in your English and History classes, and they will be a fantastic resource as you prepare for standardized tests. At the end of each month she will publish the entire list, as well as a link to Quizlet for easy study. Students who don’t use Twitter will see them on the scrolling announcements, or can see Mrs. Lienau for the complete lists. #dailyderiv ________________________________________

COUNSELING DEPARTMENT NEWS

Things have been buzzing in the Counseling Office so far this year. Counselors have been meet-ing with their 9th grade students throughout the quarter to ensure a smooth transition to the high school. 10th and 11th grade students took the PSAT in October and will get those results back in early December. For 11th grade students, it is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. This fall is one of the busiest times for seniors. They are busy making post-secondary plans, up to a third applying to colleges Early Decision or Early Action. ** Seniors, a reminder – if you haven’t met with your counselor yet, make sure you set up an appointment well ahead of your deadlines. If you are applying to colleges or technical schools that use the Accuplacer Placement Test, you can prepare for and take that assessment free of charge in our Learning Center. Check with your counselor for more information.

TIPS FOR STAYING ON TOP OF STRESS

Take care of your body. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and enough rest and sleep will prepare your body for daily

stress.

Think positively and don’t dwell on things that get you down.

Breathe deeply. This simple act can lower your anxiety level.

Focus on your achievements.

Tackle one task at a time. Don’t attempt too much at once.

Prioritize assignments in order of importance or urgency.

Keep a reasonable schedule and don’t try to do too much.

Plan ahead and set up a reasonable timetable. Add time for breaks and rests in between tasks.

Try not to worry about things you can’t control, or that might not even happen.

Forgive yourself and others. Guilt and grudges increase stress.

Make time for the things you enjoy

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION NEWS

A Dual enrollment opportunity has been created for the Drafting Technology/CAD Graphics class through the Southern Maine Community College. This will allow eligible students to receive 3 college credits, at absolutely no cost, while still in high school. Students who enroll in the Drafting Technology/CAD Graphics class, and receive at least the designated score on the Accuplacer Exam (testing English and Math skills), will be eligible to receive this credit. Once the class has been completed students will receive a college transcript, good at any college. Students interested in pursuing an engineering career in college would greatly benefit from enrolling in

this class. Most engineering colleges expect students to know the basics of drafting and CAD when

they arrive on campus. Being able to participate in a class like this, while still in high school, will give

them a strong “step-up” in college and also allow them to experience the rigor of college.

WORLD LANGUAGE NEWS

French IV is happy to welcome three new students from French speaking Africa. They are fluent in French, participating in the class to hone their reading and writing skills. Their presence offers the other students a valuable opportunity to hear French from native speakers and to learn about the francophone world. This semester Mrs. Nulle has been mentoring Sophie Matuszewicz, a Bowdoin teaching intern. Ms. Matuszewicz observes and participates in classes and will eventually be teaching an extended lesson to Mrs. Nulle’s French IV class. She also spent a day observing Mrs. Bravo’s and Mrs. Duncan’s classes. Because we believe that teachers set the example for students to be life-long learners, World Language teachers regularly attend classes and workshops to update our content area knowledge and to improve instruction and learning. In preparation for the adoption of a proficiency-based diploma, World Language teachers have been attending informational workshops since last fall. On October 9, all members of the department attended a free, Department of Education workshop on Standards-Based Instruction and Assessment for teachers of World Languages. Mrs. Nolan attended the recent AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portu-guese) workshop where the focus was on Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Her students will be reading Garcia Marquez stories later this year. Mrs. Nulle and Mrs. Bravo had the opportunity to attend a free, full-day, immersion workshop spon-sored by CAVILAM and TV5monde. TV5monde is commercial-free, educational French TV. The workshop provided a full day of French immersion as well as intensive training in the use of TV5 monde as an authentic resource for the French classroom.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Day who qualified for the Golf State Individual Competition held at Natanus Golf Course on October 18th. Congratulations to both our boys and girls cross country teams for qualifying for the state meet which was held on November 1st in Belfast. The girls finished in 4th place and Tessa Cassidy and Tiffany Tanner both qualified for the New England Regionals with their 4th and 9th place finishes! The New England Regionals will be held on November 8th at Winkham Park in Manchester, CT. Good luck girls!

Congratulations to both our boys and girls soccer teams for qualifying for the MPA playoffs. The boys opened up the quarterfinal round with a win over Messalonskee 3-0, and their semi-final win over Hampden Academy 4-1. Next up is the Class A Eastern Maine Regional Championship on Wednesday November 5th vs. Lewiston at Lewiston High School at 5:00pm. Winner of this game goes to the State Championship at Hampden Academy vs. the winner of Scarborough v. Cheverus. The girls soccer team won their quarter final game against Messalonskee 2-0, and played a semi-final game at Edward Little on November 1st, but came up short 3-1.

Congratulations to the football team for their #1 seed in the Class B East playoffs. The #1 seed earned them a first round bye into the playoffs and will now play a semi-final game here Friday night at 7:00pm against Messalonskee. If the Dragons win, they will play at home again on November 14th at 7:00 against the winner of the Lawrence/Cony game.

A review of the policy is as follows:

Students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of community service as a graduation

requirement.

Students need to earn five hours before their 11th grade year and fifteen before their

12th grade year to obtain off campus privileges.

It should be noted, in 2008 the Brunswick School Board amended the policy to allow 8th graders to earn up to 10 hours towards their thirty hour requirement for graduation at Bruns-

wick High School.

Certain job shadow opportunities may compliment the spirit of this requirement while also di-rectly satisfying career objectives suggested by the Maine Learning Results. To the extent that

these opportunities exist, pre-arranged and approved job shadow experiences may be used to fulfill

up to ten hours of the thirty hour requirement.
